Vet consult-how much do you pay?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Had to take one of my cats to the local vet yesterday for a sore eye, nearly had a heart attack when I went to pay the bill almost $200, $84 of that was just the consult!

Rang my old vet to find out how much they are charging for a consult, $20 less and they are a lot more thorough, the drugs are a lot cheaper and they don't charge for a revisit like this vet.

I thought a little country vet would be cheaper than one in an affluent suburban area, guess I was wrong.

Looks like I'm going to have to travel over an hour just so we can continue to afford for our animals to see the vet when needed.

How much do others pay for a vet consult? Are you in the city, country or suburbia?

Mine is $65-$70 for a consultation.

Just remember if you are driving for an hour - both ways - to see a cheaper Vet in the long run it may not be any cheaper when you take into account fuel and running costs of the vehicle and time spent.

We are in the city but in the burbs and that is ball park what ours is. We went on the weekend and it was $155 for the consult and some ointment - I'm not sure how much was consult vs ointment though.  Now that I think about it though, that's bloody expensive ointment.

We are back for a check up this weekend so i'll see how much just the consult is.

I actually wouldn't be too keen on travelling too far to get to the vet in case you have something happen that means time is of the essence and you beed to get them there quick.  I would much rather build up a relationship with someone local and close by (but that's just my personal preference)

I have never payed more than $65 for a consult even at other vets around where we used to live.

We have been to this vet a few times now and it seems to be dearer every visit!

It's not ideal having to travel so far, I know the cats will hate it, dogs aren't as much of an issue, it costs me very little in fuel, working around three kids will make it hard but at least my old vet is open 7 days a week and except for Sunday's is open until 11pm .

If it's an emergency we'll go local otherwise everyone will have to put up with the travel.

It's definitely not a mix up between the front desk billing and the vet itself? have you questioned it or talked to them about it?

Most vets in my area ( Sydney Suburban) charge what your current vet does, but the vet I go to is like your old one. About $60 for a consult, no charge for follow up consults on the same issue, meds are cheap as anything and only doled out as much as you need - one of my cats needed some scourban for 2 days and instead of selling me a bottle like most would he filled up four syringes from the giant bottle he has and just charged me for that amount.

Sadly, I think vets like him are few and far between.

I went to a new vet after my vet passed away and didn't gel with anyone at the practice and was amazed as it was $82 for a consult compared to $58 at my old vet. the meds were way more expensive too, and when i got a new pup the difference for a c3 and chip was $60 , so i took him back to my old vet and really liked the new vet who did his consult and have now been going back with Zelda too.

they all seem to charge a surcharge for sunday consults now too, never used to.

I can't remember exactly sorry, but somewhere between $60-$90.

Usually visits cost more than that with the addition of medicines, vaccines or tests.

When my dog needed follow up consults and weekly injections our vet only charged us for the initial consult fee, and the cost of the injections/screenings.

We have a tiny local vet clinic in a semi-rural town. (Across the bridge from a regional "city")

$68 I think. They never used to charge for a revisit but I was last time so not sure whether the policy has changed.  The wonderful thing about my vet is he will see you afterhours for emergencies.  Doesn't fob you off to the emergency vet.

City suburbs for a primarily walk in vet

$65 general consult - dogs

$110 general consult - rabbits "exotic" pet

$130 afterhours consult - dogs

i forget the rabbit after hours. It was less than $200

Why on earth do they charge more for rabbits, I always paid less for the rabbits and guinea pigs.

why are rabbits so expensive?

because they are an "exotic" pet is my understanding. That was the price from lort smith vet btw. I no longer user them for rabbits, as the specialist vet was never available and the non-specialist vets kept diagnosing things as abnormal that were normal (perfectly fine teeth :( ), or give advice contrary to rabbit health/metabolism (to not feeding before a spay etc) :(

There is a rabbit specialist in melbourne who will do house visits for like $120 and that includes vaccinations and dental check, so ideally I prefer to use them.
