More Monarto Chimps

47 posts in this topic

Myopixia had such a great passion. I miss talking with her very much. There's so very much I'd love to tell her about. I'd definitely recommend looking at her photos if you're interested in primates; she gave a great insight into Taronga's chimps and gorillas.

It was because of myopixia that I finally got off my butt and changed careers to be working with animals... pay is crap, but satisfaction level is incredible... I'm finally doing something that is hard work, but so rewarding on so many levels, and I love it to bits!

Myo so loved to hear my tales of cuddling emus, cleaning facial abscesses on possums, smooching kangaroos, and being attacked by recalcitrant cockatoos... lol! My fave memory of her was near the end when I managed to pull a few strings at one of the zoos to get her some personal time with their little monkeys... usually the public get around 15 mins, but she got to spend an entire hour being mobbed by a large group of common marmosets... the look of pure joy on her face was something I'll always remember... and I have photos... LOTS of photos!

Some people change you for the better when you meet them... myo was one of those people for me.

Enzi is getting to be a big boy! He seem to have inherited his dad's way with the ladies.

Lovely photos again, Grizabella  :):) Enzi is certainly growing up , while still acting as a cheeky toddler - exploring his talents, getting in others' way , having fun ..and looking at his world thru bright eyes :) it was SO good to see them all on Saturday .

He has such a beautiful face, and those stick out ears, kind of like a goofy 5yo kid.   He's adorable, great pics as always!

It's been ages since I've been up to see the chimps, what with petrol prices so high, but I made it to pay them a visit today. Hopefully I'll be back again for Enzi's third birthday later this month.

Thank you! The sun was very harsh, which makes it very challenging to take pictures of dark coloured animals. I was really pleased with what I was able to get considering.

Galatea is a doll... just the most soulful eyes.

Boyd's turned forty and Hannah's pregnant? This calls for a party!

40!! That's a pretty grand age ... he wears it well
not sure how I feel about hannah .... guess I'll just worry along with everyone else    - :o

that party certainly was a success :D
One of those iceblocks, a few friends   and a day in which to enjoy it ...Hmmmmm... sounds an idea ! ;)

maybe I'll design a lunch based on a chimp party

I'm trying not to worry about Hannah... there's no reason why it shouldn't all be okay, but after Soona's death in childbirth I don't think I'll be able to completely shake that fear from my mind. To my knowledge, she was mother raised, so should care for her infant.

How old is Hannah?  It must be terrible to lose one of the family in childbirth.  It isn’t as though you can run in and stretcher her out to the maternity ward

I love the way the staff went all out with the birthday celebrations

Hannah is 24. Usually, a female would have had at least one infant by that age, but she is not old either.

It was devastating to lose Soona that way. It's one of those situations where there really is nothing that can be done; it happens very quickly, and the process of separating chimpanzees in order for one to be anaesthetised and taken out for treatment is not often straightforward. Soona passed peacefully with her friend Zombi by her side, which was some comfort. One of the males, Gombe, tended to the infant for the first hour before Zombi took over. Baby Boon only survived a couple of weeks, tragically, but his short life touched many hearts.

The staff (and enrichment volunteers) are brilliant- they love throwing the chimps big celebrations almost as much as the chimps enjoy them!
