Pets travelling overseas

Hi there,

 

we have a much loved family Dog and there is a possibility of us moving to the US. Obviously we want our boy Charlie to come with us but just wanted some feedback as to whether this is too big a  journey for a dog. He is a big baby and the distress of being away from us permanently would be a bigger emotional toll than a short term separation but with the long journey. We have taken our cats with us in the past without issue. would love some thoughts and feedback especially from those of you that have had your animals travel.

Depends on whether your  willing to put the time and effort in

Dogs cope well,crate Train him now and work on his coping skills.

If there are issues then you need to see a vet behaviourist that can help you .

No one can  really answer you question except yourself .

One of my pups is off to the UK in a few weeks with his owners. He’s 9 months old, VERY active but I crate trained the litter (and did a lot of desensitization to loud noises) and his owners have followed up. He is super cool and relaxed in his crate and I’m not concerned at all.

For me the question would be, how long you plan to be there and is the plan for you to stay until he lives his life out in the US?   

 

My understanding is that getting them there is really just the long plane ride.  It's bringing them back with Australia's quarantine laws that I wouldn't want to do.

Its only 10 days in quarantine & not that big a deal .
The time is longer only if an issue occurs .
Be grateful for quarantine this end as a potential carrier of a new disease strain arrived in quarantine recently ,it was isolated & the dogs in the facilities had to stay a tad longer to ensure all was good which it was .

Ah ok.  Has that changed?  I always thought it was about 3 months.  10 days is totally doable.

 

I don't have a problem with the reason why we have our quarantine laws at all.  I just personally wouldn't put one of my pets through 3 months of quarantine (as that is what I thought it was).

It hasn’t been 3 months coming into Aust for a very long time.

The most recent change was from a month to 10 days and that was a couple of years ago.

There is a bit to do the overseas end before they enter, making sure the appropriate time periods have elapsed since blood tests and vaccinations, but quite doable.  The Commonwealth Dept of Agriculture and Water Resources has step by step guides on its website and there are agents that specialise in doing it. 

 

I have bought two over from the US, one bounced out of quarantine happy as can be, the other found it a bit more traumatic but she had unfortunate delays along the way. Your dog would have the benefit of going home to you, mine were going to a new home, with me, which is no doubt harder. 

 

Going into the US is much easier and as long as your dog has no particular noise sensitivities or anxieties I would do it myself. An anxious dog I might not.

Seems like we have come a long way in regards to quarantine periods, which is fantastic.
