Pilling advice needed please

Hi

Normally id just put any pills in his food but these recent ones need to be given on an empty stomach.  They are also rather large and are not supposed to be broken.  I try to fling it back as far as i can, hold his mouth closed, lift his head and rub his neck but he still manages to bring it back up somehow.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure about the pill applicator. I had a cat one years ago but this tablet would be too big i think.

Guess ill persevere and if that doesnt work maybe wrap it in cheese

Coating with peanut butter may require less food intake.

Personally, I'd call the vet and ask how empty the stomach needs to be.

My dogs don't mind the finger down the throat, but I don't like doing it

Dogs can be trained to take pills on cue and/or accept being ‘pilled’. Below are links in case you’re interested on working on this outside of pill times.

In the meantime I’d ask if you can coat it ever so slightly as others have mentioned. My dog also has a medication that ideally needs to be taken on an empty stomach, and I coat it in the tiniest bit of canned dog food.

Another thing you could ask about is getting it compounded into a capsule. This might help by (a) removing any offensive flavour, (b) potentially making it a smaller, and (c) putting it into a shape that’s easier to swallow if you’re dealing with e.g. a round tablet. I find capsules easier to swallow than round tablets and I imagine dogs do too!

ETA call around to a few compounding chemists if you go that route. There can be a big variance in prices. :)

Dog.  I only mentioned the cat pill popper as i wasnt sure if there were different sizes.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I will contact the specialist and see if they can be covered in food.

Years and years ago when I worked at a Newfoundland kennel, when we had to give AB’s or wormers etc, they’d always need about 10 huge tablets. We’d basically make a fist with all the pills and ram it down their throat pretty much into their guts, let go, withdraw arm! Saved a lot of drama !

Yep... that's how it's done here too... lol! I also hold the mouth shut and blow into their nose... guaranteed swallow reflex...

It is just so very easy , once you know the way :) I have ...and so have others here, given probably hundreds /thousands of pills this way with NOT ONE  choking incident :) promise!

I just stick it down their throat, close their mouth and blow in their nose if needed. I started with Atlas when he was able to start on Milbemax and have little resistance. I recently got Sentinel and of course he won't have anything to do with the giant chews, so they have to get shoved down too. He loved his Meloxicam though.
