SPD Roll advice for puppy

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I have started this separate thread to try and get some advice on SPD rolls and diet for my 'itchy smelly staffy pup' (thats my other thread name.)

He is 14 weeks old and we suspect is allergic to chicken, due to the fairly severe allergy rash he has been experiencing. I switched him over to plain kangaroo mince and potato a few days ago and the rash has started to really settle down.

Today the vet suggested I try SPD rolls to continue with the elimination sort of diet and make sure he gets correct puppy nutrition. So I just started looking into them. I would like to continue with Kangaroo, since we have seen good results but it says it is a complete food for adult dogs and puppies need further calorie supplementation on this diet.

I have no clue what I could use to add additional calories without complicating the simple diet. can anyone offer advice?

Thanks

Nikki and Kane

Prime 100 have a chart which ticks the box on a couple of rolls suited for pups. :)

Not sure what else to add if you stick with roo. Did the vet say rice or pasta is suitable?

edited to add, Quinoa has calories, that might be another option.

I think the prime100 spd range have a couple that are suitable for pup's - turkey and flaxseed I think. Maybe the wild boar as well? I'd check the salmon and tapioca one to see if that says for all life stages as well.

I think the frozen barf is a great option though - plus the dogs usually seem to enjoy it. Might be worth looking at some of the brands like ivory coat or savour life that have some lamb puppy options to see if they have chicken in them too. Though the meals for mutts has always agreed with my mini schnauzer who has grass allergy issues.

As you're having good results with the Kangaroo, maybe contact the Prime100 people and see what they recommend to add the calories.  They do a dry food now as well.  I would avoid turkey as I imagine it is close to the chicken that he appears to be allergic too.

And good luck!  Allergies are hard.  Please keep us updated.  :)

Thanks everyone, I ended up grabbing him a roll of the salmon and tapioca. My thoughts are that it is a still a protein he has never had and we should be able to work the elimination diet with this. It says it is suitable for all life stages and especially good for dogs with skin issues. Praying that we can get him all sorted out free from medications just by changing foods

what's the % of tapioca in that salmon roll NandK? Tapioca is empty calories and used as a filler in dog food, it's low on nutrients and probably the best use for it is as wallpaper glue

Why anyone would put it in dog food beggars belief, surely sweet potato or pumpkin as a filler would be more beneficial

Stop dicking around with trying different diets, bite the bullet and take him to a specialist

You're a little ray of sunshine aren't you?

He is 14 weeks old and responded so so well to the change in diet, I dont think I feel like flushing money down the toilet this week. He is currently completely rash free, but thanks for your input. Obviously if we have a recurrence we will see a specialist, we were at the vet yesterday and even the vet didnt think the current situation warranted allergy testing.

I had a friend that spent hundreds of dollars with the vets trying to solve the rash on their border collie.  In the end someone suggested feeding her pumpkin skin & what do you know....cleared it up, so now she gets a regular feed of pumpkin skin.  If you think the Salmon might be agreeing with him, then did you see my post above where I mentioned that I fed my puppy Meals for Mutts Puppy Salmon & Sardine?  A lot cheaper than the Prime rolls.  I still buy the Prime rolls, but I cut them up, dehydrate them & use them for training treats.  The Tapioca is obviously in them as something neutral to hold it all together

And to bulk it out without upsetting the overall balance of nutrients.

i will definitely look into the meals for mutts, thanks. This dog has a bottomless stomach and I think he is going to want more than the suggested 400gms a day, which will be costly.

thanks for the suggestion. I’ll let you know what we do.

You'll find that people on this forum are generally very passionate about dogs and their well-being and unfortunately, some newcomers have let their dogs suffer while they try every different remedy under the sun in an effort to avoid vet or specialist bills, instead of putting their dog's comfort first. It sounds like you're prepared to do what's needed to make sure your pup is healthy and happy and will pursue a specialist if things go downhill again. Fingers and paws crossed, you've found the problem and it's all good from here on. :)

Absolutely, I have already researched the cost of the dermatologist and ongoing allergy injections. I’m certainly willing to go down that road however I do know that even that is only successful in 70% of cases for atopy.

so of course I am going to try the path of least resistance if it appears to be working.

the vet also said that because of his age, he may still grow out of this....on the other hand he may progress and worsen , so we will just keep doing whatever we need to do and rest assured if he worsens again we will do whatever necessary to make Kane comfortable.

You should be able to find some lamb based dry puppy foods that aren't that expensive (Google lamb based puppy food for a list).  Personally, I don't think it's so awful that tapioca is an ingredient... no worse than giving kids sandwiches on white bread.  Of course you want to see it as the main ingredient. Dogs evolved from wolves as scavengers, and most can be healthy a wide variety of foods.  And your vet is right, he may grow out of it.

Because tapioca does not contain protein, it is not considered a potential allergen or source of food sensitivity. This is especially important in limited ingredient diets that are designed for dogs with adverse food reactions .

It could very well be a case of your dog having a chicken allergy .
I have a dog with chicken allergy and its no fun but once we found the right fit no issues ever from it  no testing & no meds .
My chicken dog is fine with Turkey .

Whilst im not a promoter of grain free diets unless the dog has a very rare grain issue my boy is feed grain free Taste of the Wild Pacific stream as it was one of the very few total chicken free dry food he can eat As most are fish based he got the runs on a few of the others.
Luckily i just make up in other areas the healthy grain options .

Goat is a good meat.

Just make sure you follow the limited roll rule ,no more than 6 weeks feeding if I’m correct as the idea of the roll when sourcing food allergy is you can go back too it .

I had the thought over the weekend that there is a chance the allergy was to the cephalaxin which we stopped around the same time as the diet change....

I guess we will know better when we come to the time to challenge.
he’s still a smelly little guy and due to his general “moistness” I suspect seborrhoic dermatitis is lingering. The medicated baths will continue for the time being but he remains basically rash free, skin still a little red generally.
