Supplements For Joint Health

Dublin

I had Dublin at the vet to check his limping problem. The vet could find no obvious problem, no swelling, no discomfort, no limitation in joint flexibility, no patella problems etc. He advised me to keep a watch on the limping systems, as they are minor and consistent (ie not getting worse). He thinks maybe it could be a little bit of arthritis. Dublin was 3 in June. Does anyone know if there is anything I could add to his food to help if arthritis is likely?

Thanks

Monique

ETA: Is 3 a bit young for arthritis? The vet said no, but I haven't heard of a young dog with symptoms before?

Same here - Sasha's for the older dogs and glucosamine powder for the little tacker (who had septic arthritis).

Also I've got a tub of "Vital Greens" which I'm going to start adding - it's a whole lot of trace elements and vits/bits and pieces - not specifically for arthritis but I figure it might help with cartiledge regeneration.

Ended up buying the really big tubs cause I'll use them within the 'use-by' and it was far cheaper.

I only have good things to say about Glucosalamine Tablets, worked wonders on my long term limping problem of one of my dogs. I gave him one fish tablet and one glucosalimine tablet morning and night. When excercising him I only walked him until the limping ceased and then gradually increasd the speed at which he excercised!!!

Good Luck

My vets recommened for my boy Cosequin which has concentrated glucosamine and chondroitin (which is what is in the shark cartilage and mussel products but its purified so the body doesnt have to try and metabolise it). Its a little more expensive but apparently its worth it as it is the only one that has clinical studies to prove it really works. I researched it alot on the net and its the number 1 prescribed arthritis product for dogs in the US, but you can get it here through your vet or www.petdirect.com.au.

We have just started it so no comment yet, has anyone else tried it???

Hi,

ive just come back from vets tonight with similar results as u!!!

been on antiflamtories for a week..worse after his confinement period.

Originally suspected of luxating patella...not now.

Only there's some mild concern bout his hips, after doing xrays, yet to be comfirmed by a orthapedic specialist in town.....have to wait for their opinion....

Hes only 16 months!!!!!

could also be a torn muscle..soft tissue damage thats not showing up on xrays...

hes on 4 weeks of catrophen iinjections, then a reassesment aafter the whole course....

Ive also just got the glusomine(sp/?) tablets today, to start hiim on, like with my old arthretic jenna...... :(

I'm with you here, know how you are feeling......ive only had this puppy for a couple of months!!

I take Glucosamine and Glutamine myself, as well as my older dog 7.5yrs for his old back and hip and shoulder and toe injuries its got him moving around like he was 5.5 again \

also check the toes and feet pads on the dog, as a broken /dislocated/stubbed toe or even toenail pressure if its to long will make a dog hobble around...

i once found a piece of glass in my dogs toe pad and the flap of skin had almost covered back over it, so it was hard to spot, he was limping around the place(at a time when he had another shoulder injury) and it wasnt untill i touched the spot quite firmly that he decided to tell me where the problem was and i had to dig it out of hes foot.

but yeah ive found the Glucosamine to work well too

ETA:

Doh  Just re-read your first post ....so ime guessing the Vet did check out hes feet :(

I put Tyler through the 4 week cartrophen course and unfortunately it didn't make any difference, not saying it won't work though, I have heard it is fantastic, just didn't work for my bub. I am going to start her on a homoeopathic remedy next week so shall let you know how this goes. It should take a couple of weeks to start working, although it is so hard to tell now that the weather is warming up as Tyler doesn't have any problems in the summer months. She is also on Sasha's blend. Good luck with the cartrophen, I really hope it works for you

I have recently started our 9yo Rescue Rough Collie on the MicroGenics MSN Glucosamine and Chrondoitin Unflavoured powder and he is bounding around like a young dog again. our vet is amazed at the difference in him.

It is around $49 to but at the health food shop but he only has 3/4 teaspoon with food morning and night.

We have our Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy who has just had surgery 2 months ago for elbow dysplasia on both her front legs on COSEQUIN which is Glucosamine but the horse powder version as our specialist says it works out alot cheaper than the dog tablets. The dosage you should give is 44mg per kilo of weight, but only measure from the Glucosamine. In 3.3 gram scoop there is 1500ml of Glucosamine so you work from that. Our pup is around 25 kilos and we give her just under 1/2 a scoop. We have just been told though our poor little girl has hip dysplasia also, so back for more surgery!

Yes I use it, and have had great results to date. We are considering herbal alternatives through supervision with my vet though. However having major problems getting him to take the herbs. The herbs must have an awful taste due to vegemite not even able to mask it.

He currently gets the injection every 6 months.
