Ollie Dog - Mast Cell Tumour

Thanks for the offer of the crate Mel but he howls like a banshee if I get out of sight at the moment...

I went out the front yesterday to trim the roses and I could hear him crying inside...

I tried to keep his lead on and tie him up so he would not walk around but that made him cry more, so I just keep him with me (not that I had a social life before  )...

Cheers

Jodie

Just got the call from the vet and the mast cells are in his lymph nodes...

Vet said that chemo is expensive and it will really only give him a 50/50 chance as he has a grade 2 cancer... With chemo he will be with us for up to 18 months...

Without the chemo, he will only be here for a max of about 6 months... :(

I don't care about the cost of the chemo, but the vet said that it makes them sick (I did not think it did???)..

Has anyone experienced this and used the chemo?

Thanks in advance

Jodie

Jodie I'm so sorry to hear your news. If it were my dog I would not go for chemo. It may destroy the cancer but in the process it with also destroy your dogs immune system. There have been a number of threads on alternative treatments for cancer and it isn't all 'holistsic mumbo jumbo.' I'm the worlds biggest skeptic but I have seent he results for myself.

I know how you must be feeling, we recently lost the family dog to cancer and if it were one of my guys I'd rather chew my own arms off than even contemplate loosing them. Try not to dwell on the bad 'what if's' there is much to hope for

Dear Jodie and Ollie

I am really sorry to to hear this update, but glad Ollie is home with you

To be honest Jodie I am with your vet, I would be just making Ollie as comfortable as possible and Ollie will tell you when it is time

Hugs to you and your family

Oh, Jodie, how heart-wrenching!! Ollie is such a fighter. Hopefully some locals can recommend a holistic vet (isn't there one at Hall???) to keep Ollie comfortable for the precious time he has left.

Here's hoping he defies the odds. :strong:

Staffyluv,

DO NOT PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the time prognosis is an estimate only....Luinda was given only a few days or weeks..and over three years later she is still here...holistic treatment can and does help.

have pm'd you details.

Awe Jodie, my heart is breaking into a thousand little pieces at the moment for you :)

Bommy may not be on much at the mo due to be tired but if you send her a pm she can tell you HEAPS about the chemo, she went through it with Molly, it gave her longer with her family and as far as I know she wasn't sick all the time. I'm sure she will be more than happy to tell you as much as she can.

Please know your in my heart, thoughts and prayers

Love

Hi Jodie,

My schnauzer had chemo for about five-six weeks prior to and post his mast cell tumour (also Grade 2). It did NOT make him sick at all, the only difference was that he was a little more thirsty. He was bright and very happy as per normal. If it had made him very ill I would have reconsidered this option.

My dogs organs were ultrasounded to ensure there was no other cancer in his body. Is your vet an oncologist?

I have known many dogs that have survived a long time after mast cell tumours, my shepherd lived for four years after surgery and died at 14. I am thinking of you - love to Olllie.

I am so sorry Jodie. I have only just read this thread through now.

I just do not know what to say, how sad for you and Ollie. But do not give up I have heard and read of some great results using hollistic treatments.

Give Ollie dog a cuddle from me

Sending hugs, prayers and thoughts your way

Thankyou all for you good wishes, it really means a lot...

I have done heaps of research on the net and next week I will start to call around and find an holistic vet and an oncologist for Ollie - it may sound selfish but I just could not do it this week... I burst into tears at the drop of a hat - have even cancelled most of the appointments with my clients and I am not answering the phone much... I just want to stay on the puter and get as much info as possible about this terrible disease...

Ollie is staying very close at the moment - I am sure he knows I am upset...

I believe that there are 2 holistic vets in the ACT, one in Kambah and the other out in Hall... I guess I will call both and have a chat... Dogbesotted also gave me the contact for her holistic vet and I will call her next week as well... Hamish (vet) is on hols at the moment and will be back next week, so I thought that I would get his opinions on an oncologist for Ollie...

After the initial shock, we are all pretty quiet here at present.. The boys seem to be hiding out in their rooms...

I feel confident that we can give Ollie a great time, for the time that he has left with us...

Here is a pic of the main tumour removal site - it looks so sore... But in true staffy fashion, he still runs around the house like a maniac...

Thanks again, the emotional support you offer is very much appreciated...

Jodie and Ollie

We had our first visit with the holistic vet (HV) today and Ollie has some drops to take...

Carcinosin - once a week

Thuja - twice daily for one week

Arsenica Album - twice daily for one week

Vit C 250mg four times a day...

Our HV said that she is going to consult with a chinese herbalist and she will have the necessary stuff in next week... She thinks that he seems in pretty good shape to start with...

I will be making a few calls when I get back from my Nan's next week and organising a trip to Sydney to see an Oncologist, to decide if we should use the chemo as well as the holistic therapy...

I will be away for the next week (so it will be major DOL withdrawal) visiting my Nan who has decided that her time has come and she is refusing dialysis...

A big thanks to all those that have been a wealth of information for us at this difficult time - you know who you are... Your support and adivce has been second to none...

Thankyou

Jodie and Ollie dog

Take care of yourself, Jodie, and drive safely. It sounds like you have a lot on your mind ;)

If I can do anything at this end, give me a yell :(. Hugs to Ollie dog.

My goodness Jodie, I was soooo depressed about my own dogs "cancer" scare I didn't even see this thread through my tears.

I'm so sorry to hear that Ollie dog is ill but stay positive, Haven offered me some fantastic information which I thankfully didn't have to use, but if the hollistic option does Ollie some good I'm thrilled...

In general dogs don't get sick from chemo... I did a lot of research last week and spoke to the cancer specialist at the "Ecole Veterinaire de Maisons Alfort", (THE dog cancer specialist in France).

Maybe if chemo and Hollistic treatments are compatible, it may be worth doing both... Dogsbesotted is right, he could still be with you for ages yet, I've never known a staff. to give up easily.

My most sincere thoughts are with you. Hope you find the perfectly adapted medication that will give him years more by your side.

staffyluv,

Actually Ollies incision site looks quite good...Lucindas was 15cm by 12 cm from the top of her chest down to almost the bottom of her ribs. By day two the area surrounding the site was burning hot, red and inflamed and she was rapidly getting weak.

Ollies surrounding area looks good...no nasty histamines being pumped out so that is GOOD, GOOD, GOOD.

Keeping you all in my heart and prayers

Staffyluv I know you are away for a few days but I'd like to know how is Ollie getting on ?

Can you share you the information you have received from the Holistic vets ?

Haven has just posted another thread on cancer which is fascinating. I know its not the same form of cancer as Ollie dog's, but every single bit of news may help.

Thoughts are with you. :)
