Epilepsy

I am sorry to hear about your dog being so sick and having seizures. By the sound of the symptoms and the dog not eating and drinking etc someone needs to take the dog to a vet for medication and treatment. A big backyard will not substitute for vet care, medications for seizures etc.

A dog with seizures can still be a loving pet as long as it receives the proper care.

Maybe you can contact a beagle rescue org if your family do not want to care for the dog.

Can you call the vet who did the blood tests etc to talk about treatment for the poor beagle?

The age and breed of the dog are within the known areas of epilepsy for dogs unfortunately.

All the best of luck for you and your dog

Hi all,

Update on my annie she has improved 100% since yesterday, she's holding her head up by herself not for long but at least she's doing it.

She has still had no more "s" since last tuesday  I have been going up ever couple of days to have a chat to her and today she really responded to me she knew who I was

They look like putting a feeding tube in tomorrow as she is still not eating. Her temp is 38.9 and stable. Mum and I where doing some physio on her legs today and they are moving fine now.

So fingers crossed when I go and see her on thursday she will be alot better.

She's still paddling every now and then but Im told that its normal as she wants to get up but just not strong enough yet.

It's getting harder to try and run my new buisness with her being so sick as all I want to do is be by her side :p

Well will keep you updated as days go by.

Cherio for now

Have only just read this thread

Complimentary Treatments:

Silicea 30c (silicone dioxide) can be helpful: one dose of two whole pellets or three pellets crushed to a powder on the tongue. Allow no food one hour before or after. Wait for a month, then reassess the condition. many owners also find acupuncture useful for controlling epilepsy in dogs.

:bottom: Hi All, update on Annie, well I was up with her today and she's looking fab compared to the last few visits.

I took her out side and gave her a brush and done some physio.. she managed to make a few steps although only baby ones , it's a sign she's getting better :bottom:

She has got a feeding tube and has had a couple of feeds today.

The only major concern now is that she seems to be retaining sodium?? I asked if this was from kbr and no it's not.. they have got her on a glucose drip.

Boy I cant wait to have her home it's been a very long and painful experience ($$$) not that I paid for the op but making the trip to melbourne every few days, plus trying to run a newly bought buisness.

Will update in the next few days.

:bottom: to all that have sent prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery.

Love shelite lover and Annie xx

Wow - Sheltielover I am glad to hear your little one is on the mend. I look forward to seeing the final results of the surgery. You are braver then I.

My Monte Bear has had a terrible time of it lately and is clustering on average every 14 days. His meds have been increased and I am not sure we have much left to move on dosage as he is already on quite high doses. He has also developed a facial tic. :happydance:

We are off to see a neuro in the new year.

Puggles, I am not sure if you've looked at sheltielovers' other posts since you wrote this, but little Annie has been PTS :happydance:

SL posted in the General and Rainbow Bridge forums.

I am sorry to hear of Monte's clusters. I'm hoping a neuro will be able to help. It is awful when you can't help your babies. I would feel so helpless. Have you already found a neuro? Have you posted on the epi-k9 group?

Everything crossed for your little one. Please keep us updated.

Hi Everyone

This is my first post and I am extremly concerned for my beagle.

She was 2 in August and suffered her first seizure in June. It was about 30 minutes after her yearly booster shots. She just dropped to the floor and began foaming at the mouth, thrashing around, urinating and defecating. On speaking to the vet afterwards she said just to keep an eye her and see how she behaves.

hi Wayno,

is your beagle on medication? Is she from a breeder (I ask in case the breeder would be willing to take her back) If not, could you contact a beagle rescue group and discuss the matter with them to see if they can help?

What a sad situation for this little dog to be in. I hope for her sake you manage to sort something out. Please let us know what happens.

Hi Meg Ed,

sorry to hear your puppy seizured again. My pup has them every two weeks at this stage. NOT good.

we are currently on pb and kbr mix. Only been on kbr for a month, it takes about 4 months to work so fingers crossed it works.

I have also completely changed his diet. Cutting grains to a minimum and feeding raw meat and steamed veges. KBR reacts to changes in salt so am maintaining a very steady diet.

Let us know what meds your doc puts you on, and if you need any help.

where do all you guys live? In sydney? Be nice to have a epi australia support group :)

all my best

Hey Staffy-Lover

Just spoke to the vet.His blood work came back normal so she is going to start him off Pb.I'll pick him up tonight after work. The vet said he's bord but he's fine.LOL he's lucky he's in the air conditioning today though.

Iam from Sydney also

Cheers Megs

Oh Yeah! I generally feed him fresh meat(either people stuff or the VIP pet mince) I mix in either pasta or rice(he wont come at vegies i've tried)Goodo's or natures gift dry food.A wing or a bone for breakky.

How dose that sound?

Cheers again

Hi Megs, I'm sorry your boy has to go on meds but if you're as lucky as me, you'll wonder what the fuss was about. Casper sz were two weeks apart when we put him on pb and he has not had a sz since - and that was in May :happydance2:

I don't remember if you said how much your boy weighs. How much pb is the vet putting him on? What vet do you go to? I lived in Sydney at the time Casper went on meds so I'm just curious what vet you use.

I hope this will sort things out for you!

BTW, about the diet. It generally sounds good although some owners of epi dogs have eliminated all grains from their dogs diets and they reckon that has helped reduce sz. If you want to give it a shot, try putting some raw veg through a food processor and see if he'll eat them.

hi meg and whiteshep !

wow whiteshep that is a great result. My poor pup is having a much harder time of it, didn't respond at all to the pb have just started kbr.

meg, as whiteshep said the grains might be a bit high. I just use a good quality dog biscuit as a supplement to the fresh foods. you can use pasta and rice but maybe not as much.

I actually have to steam or boil my pups veges. I know this means it is not quite as good but is still good for them. Try cabbage they usually like that.

wondering what type of dog you have? Mine is a staffy. What about you white shepmum?

meg - be ready for the pb to knock pup around a bit. will be off balance and lethargic, but don't panic cause this goes away in a few weeks.

hope you get a good result.... keep us updated

Hey guys!! sorry for the late reply finally had a day off work yeaterday.YAH!

Eddie is a Norkfolk terrier x fox terrier (looks just like a rough coat J russell)He weighs 11kgs.The vet has started him on 25mg of PB morning and night. He's not his usual hypo self at the moment,he's happy just to have a snooze and i found his balance is a bit off too.I use Mortdale Vet hospital,I have moved out of that area and it's not real local but i can't find a vet i like in the new area so i'll keep with these guys till i do.

Cheers Megs

Staffy-lover, to answer your question look at my sig...Casper is the white one (hence my user name  )

Megs, have you specified how long Eddie has been on Pb for - there's too many pages to re-read!? If possible, would you be able to give him his Pb 3 times a day (I don't know what your daily schedule is like) if a vet was to recommend it?

You say you've moved but you didn't say where - I don't suppose you're anywhere near Dundas?

hi white shep,

yep i realised that you obviously owned a white shep, but thought you might own more than one dog and that the epi might be something else hehehehhehehehe

beautiful dog by the way, I have never seen one before.

meg, u can expect pup to be wonky and lethargic for a few weeks, so dont worry too much. PB will make pup more thirsty and hungry, so you will see an increase in toilet activity. Regarding the hunger - you have to be careful pup doesn't put on too much weight. Also feed pb with food not by itself to help liver out a bit.

Bradbury (near campbelltown) has a v good vet - my sister uses him. His name is Morris.

Now the M7 is in, u could try my vet over at Rooty Hill - his name is Rob, he is excellent and has contacts with the people at Sydney University who specialise in epilepsy.

Keep in touch, the support helps you go from panic to controlled anxiety heheheheheheheh

Ed's been on Meds for 4 day now.Last night i started balling to a friend when she asked me how he was :) .I hate seeing him wobble a stagger about.Yesterday has been the worst day as well as this morning. He's not the hypo mate that tears up and down the hall way when i get home. And his eyes are dull, not bright and eager like they usually are.I really hope this passes soon becauses he's not happy and i don't want him be like this for ever. :)

Cheers Megs

meg,

the lethargy comes and goes. Once he is over this initial stage you will see a much brighter dog don't worry. But until you get the meds worked out he will be off his pace.

It is a very emotionally stressful thing to see your pup either seizuring or lethargic from meds, so you do sometimes just need to let out that cry. But over time as you educate yourself on all you can about epilepsy the stress goes a LITTLE bit as you feel more prepared.

Have a big cry, cause it will make you feel better. Just know that we are going through the same thing and are here to talk when you need

hope all is well
