:D

ok...I've tried "no licks" and correctional reinforcement....I've also tried positive distraction....

but still, he want's to lick to suck up to me, shmoose, and clean my toes! :)

I know it's a pack heirachy response...I know it's him trying to curry my favour...but I just can't bear the constant licking!!! a small amount is ok...but this is getting rediculous!!! ...yeah, I know, dobes are sooks!....they are the cosumate smoozers for pats & lov'in....but my toes, hands, arms, legs, fingers & belly button are no longer safe from the attack of the irrepresible tongue! :D

any suggestions!???? ?????

;)

I dunno, but that would seriously gross me out and I couldn't take it :)

My dogs like to give me a little kiss in the mornings, or when I come back from being out etc but if it is over the top I guess there is a problem there..have you tried spraying yourself with Aeroguard I bet he wouldn't like the taste of that ??

We used to that with a psycho childhood mutt who was obsessed with shoelaces...while the shoes were on your feet  Left them alone if we sprayed Aeroguard on.

I don't know about toxicity though, I'd imagine if it is OK to spray on skin a tiny lick wouldn't kill a dog ?

Thanks for that K9, I have a licker at home and was really looking forward to a solution

Looks like I just keep ignoring it

Thanks for adding your website link, you should be hearing from friends of mine with a naughty Shar Pei soon lol, goodluck

K9: no problems, ignoring an already established behaviour may not be the solution, it may take a little more careful observation & solving the reason the dog feels ovberly submssive that it needs to show the Alpha submission through licking (grooming)..

Some dogs do like to show their (lower) position, but if its constant it should be looked at..

Perhaps the command style (too assertive or harsh), body language, some negative event paired to the dogs name etc etc...

The dog in question is an abused rescue dog whom I am fostering, she is very submissive by nature and licks all other dogs and people constantly

As the weeks go by she is getting better and it appears to be only me now that is being licked

Any suggestions??

I've employed a low and very quiet growl from the bottom of my throat when a dog has become too licky - seems to suggest to them to cease and desist, but haven't got a stressed reaction from it, just get an apologetic look and they wander away. I tend to use a gutteral rumble instead of no a lot...works really really well for me. :)

I have a licky flatcoated retriever, part of their hard wiring. A couple of things I do is too put my hands inside my sleeves, though sometimes he will lick my sleeves. I also avoid eye contact and will sometimes fold my arms and look the other way. Sometimes I hold him back and his tongue really stretches out. I also give him a toy because if he has a toy in his mouth then he cannot lick. I tell people not to pat him or make friends with him, or else he will seek that person down for licky licks. If people tell him off he just licks more. So when meeting new people I tell them not to pat him, if they ignore well they get licked, and I say "I told you so". He used to lick other dogs mouths out as well, but that has stopped except for one Newfoundland. He also used to lick our sheep as well. He will also go inbetween peoples legs and do a little dance, but then he is not licking. He is 5 years old!!!!!!!!!! At the end of the day I just put up with it, at least he is not aggressive, and he has an excellent recall. So if I see potential people in sight that could be licked I quickly call him before he has the chance. When he is crated in flyball he licks the crate. We were at 2tollers place and he licked her glass door. LOL :)

Thanks K9,

you've hit the nail on the head :) as the correction is his cue to start sucking up! ;) even the low growl suggested by Tangerine dream is enough to get him going :D

It's entirely my fault of course as in the beginning, I did accept a small amount of it, whilst I was assessing his levels of agression (he was a 15 mth old rescue) & was showing some very assertive behaviours after the first week. He'd spent most of his life chained up or caged & hadn't learned socialising, and wasn't reading other dogs signals to back off, so I must admit, I rewarded him when he would back down...I've now got a dog that will "leave off" annoying other dogs with over the top play...but suffering the predicatable consequences! :D (at least I've got clean toes & belly button! hahahaha!)

he is slowly getting the "no licks" command and I have had to lower the intensity of my corrections & intensity of distraction to achieve it, being an adolecent, who was seriously understimulated previously, he's taking to training like a duck to water! since it has been over 8 years since I've had an adolecent dobe on my hands (& that one was well trained by 10 mths) I had almost forgotten the passion dobes have to learn their lessons so quickly.

so I'm really only having a hissy rant  brought about by one evening when I wasn't feeling well (& therefore niggly) & in his enthusiasm to make me feel better the tongue was out in force! hahaha & each time I asked him to stop, or tried to avoid it, he just tried harder! :p

having been chained for so long, I believe he developed licking as a self soothing behaviour as I've noticed in the 2 months I've had him his self-licking has reduced dramatically.

due to all his other behavioural issues he came with...I'm really not worried about the licking, because it indicates that he's understanding his re-training/training and I'd rather a dobe that can read emotions, than one who is de-sensitised.

he was just trying to make "mum" feel better in the way he used to make himself feel better & it was more my issue than his!

Mum was having a "bad hair day" :) ...and I was being a bitch! ;)

That is so cute really :D

Off Topic but one morning I was woken by Jones whining at my window, which was quite unusual and he sounded quite bothered by something.

The moment I got up I realised I was SICK, and spent the day with a bucket very close to hand and running to the loo

I've always wondered if somehow he knew I was sick ? Maybe I had a sick smell (the window was open) or was grumbling in my sleep, or maybe it was just a strange coincidence

I also have a licker that drives me spare.

He licks clothing too though. From the minute I walk in the door at night he starts licking my pants. He is relentless and this continues for several hours until he becomes tired and then he will wander off to his bed. I have never been able to stop him. Never, not once.

I can't believe it is a dominance thing with him though??? I think his maybe related to his pica??? But I don't know. If I wear perfume or have just come out of a shower he is even more inclined to lick.

Lordy knows what my neighbours think as I walk around every day yelling "Stop licking me for chrissakes!!"

:D Puggles - You can imagine what they must tell their friends etc....

I've nearly got Belle totally out of the licking now. She only does it when she's really excited now.

Chopper - Well he needs reminding every day but after a no he tends to stop.
