  1. This is a poem by Leunig. Not dog specific but it reminds me of when I lost my heart dog. When your heart is cut, cracked or broken Do not clutch it Let the wound lie open Let the wind from the good old sea blow in And bathe the wound with salt And let it sting Let a stray dog lick it Let a bird lean in the hole and sing A tiny song Like a little bell And let it ring
  2. I am so sorry. My thoughts and sincere condolences to you and your wife, Sticks. ;) Romp and rest easy at the bridge, Fraser.
  3. I think like everything there are always going to be those that agree and those that don't. I went to my local fishmonger who is a GR breeder and when he realised I was asking for the fish for my dogs he talked me out of it. He said there were too many fine, needle sharp bones in some fish and that he only feeds his dogs the boneless fillets. Personally, I now buy the boneless fillets occasionally but mainly stick to the tinned stuff.
  4. He's into the repair/sale of clippers and other grooming equipment, from what I see. I am having an identity crissis here. I've been a woman, a baker, a dog groomer, unable to afford my vet bills Then maybe you need to get some help? . "Human Clippers -vs- Dog Clippers" thread Or does re-reading your own post help to remind you? Read the first page of this post "When I informed her that the cost price of the medication was around $20 she was not happy. I have also worked in an equipment service industry and it was the practice to have a service charge and the parts cost was rounded up to the nearest dollar." Does this remind you? What has this got to do with this post??? You said you are having an identity crisis. I think erny was just trying help you remember who you said you were?
  5. Wish I could find a dentist with that form of moral obligation. Every time I get my car serviced I have no idea what added parts I will need to pay for and neither does the mechanic until he has given the car a good look over. You don't think those parts are marked up quite a bit? I have sourced my own parts for my car, as I have also gotten scripts from the vets before but that is only because the situations called for it at the time and I had done my own research. I have spent over $100 in the past week on medications for my dog. I have no issue with that and if I did I would discuss it directly with my vet.
  6. We wouldn't expect a human baby to learn and grow into a well adjusted member of society if it was brought up with no disapline, boundaries or schooling. It is a mistake to have this high expectation of dogs. You get what you put in. Your dog is not being naughty to annoy you it just does not know what is expected. They cannot rationalise like us and do not have the greatest grasp of the english language. Be patient. Learn to be a good teacher.
  7. Hi Tony & Emma. We used them a couple of years ago. I will send you a PM.
  8. Thanks for the replies. I did see your topic, huski, and that is what made me want to try out the salmon heads. It is just that the fishmonger was so emphatic about not feeding them it made me think twice. Excellent advice, Laffi, and I will do just that. I might just stick to the fillet offcuts for the time being until I do a bit more research.
  9. I have been reading with interest the threads about feeding fish with bones in and fish heads. Today I decided to try my guys with some salmon heads but when I went into the fish monger and told him they were for the dogs he said no way. He and his wife are breeders and he said they would never risk it with fish bones and only feed filleted fish. He said feed chicken or any other meat with bones but not fish. He gave me a bag of filleted offcuts to give my dogs instead. Is there anyone here that would not feed their dogs fish with bones. I know lots here feed the fish heads and non-filleted fish without a drama but I must admit I am now having second thoughts. Wondering what others think?
  10. Hi David. I don't have enough knowledge about training camps in general to offer any advice with respect to that, but, I did have problems with my dogs behaviour and I got one on one help from a reputable behaviourist and can totally recommend that as an option along with joining your local dog training club. It is a great learning and bonding experience with your dog. All the best.
  11. When my dog does it to one of my fosters it seems like more of a dominance thing. Maybe the licking in itself is not necessarily dominance or submission but dependant on all the other dynamics going on in the interactions between the dogs.
  12. Totally agree with PF here for a few reasons. My confidence increased so much from getting "a really shit hot pro". You are given more 'tools' to work with by someone that really does know their stuff. When anyone attempts to give you advice you can then say "Thankyou, but we have a program and are working under the guidence of a behaviourist so we are sticking with that". I understand where you are coming from. I had so many people offering me advice (looking back, some was good but some bad and potentially damaging) and I was chopping and changing tactics which possibly made our situation worse and made me feel like a bad owner. As soon as I was working with a behaviourist we started getting great results and it was also good to have an automatic reply to people to minimise all the well meaning advice, without feeling rude.
  13. If you do decide to feed it to Gracie, IR, I would be really interested to hear how she goes on it.
  14. Hi FTPO, My dog had hypothyroid symptoms. I think the T4 test is not very conclusive so my vet begrudginly did the TSH (which only cost an extra $48) both came back within the normal range. I got a second opinion from a Greyhound Vet and he decided to try my dog on Thyroxine because of his symptoms. It didn't make a difference to my dog so he went off it but I was glad to have found a vet that was willing to try something. Best of luck with your dog.
