  1. Aloha DOL! It's time to pick up some flea/worming products and I've been keen to try Sentinel Spectrum, but as I've settled on this solution I've realised I have a conundrum. Is it ok to use if your dog is already on the annual heartworm injection? I appreciate everyone guidance and anything beyond the (Drontal and Frontline/Advantix option I currently use).

  2. It's a bit of a hike but I recommend Jane Harper from Dogs on Track.

From about six months Baci started to show signs of being anti-social and we went through many forms of training and behaviourists to try to help her and failed. She was then attacked by another dog which furthered her fear aggression. We went to see Jane after being recommended her and Baci has come along really well. It really helps that Jane has a completely non-reactive dog to bring along to training and we are now able to walk right beside dogs without any nipping.

We are now hoping to return to classes and in time Lure Coursing. That is if I can catch my rat bag!

  3. Hi everyone. I was wondering if I could pick your minds for some advice. I have recently have swapped Baci on to Orijen (previously we were feeding her Nutro and this worked really well). We feed her a cup and a half as it is difficult to keep weight on her. Unfortunately over the last couple of days she has been throwing up and other horrible things overnight. So a couple of questions:

    - Is it the food?

    - Is there anything I can do rather than throw the food out?

    - What sort of food should we feed in the future?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

  4. If she is distracted (not sure if I am sure what you mean - at lure coursing), having a good recall, whatever the tool - voice, whistle ---any sound, has to be taught and proofed.

Remember dogs (that are not hearing impaired), do not stop hearing, they simply stop listening.

Distracted by the idea that the Lure might start again. So she dashes around the field looking for it and makes me look like I've done absolutely no training what so ever (which isn't true). Such a little bugger.

  5. Why do you need a whistle BTW? Most common problem whistle users have is they blow too long for a sit at a distance in training without proofing the dog. Short trills should instilled, so long blows can be saved for real emergenies. Leaving something up your sleeve so to speak.

Thank you for everyone's thoughts. I wanted to give whistle training a go when I needed to recall Baci when there are large distractions. At Lure Coursing events there is a large field and she is just so distracted. So trying a difficult noise to see if she will respond to it after I do lots of proofing.

  6. I quite liked 'It's Me or The Dog' by Victoria Stillwell. Had lots of good basic information in it. Also there was a wonderful one called 'RSPCA Complete Dog Training Manual' by Dr Bruce Fogle.

I hope it helps and other than that can I just say your Avatar is gorgeous. Go the Typewriter!

  7. Thanks Arcana !! Will try bio zet - do you just pour it over the spot and rub it in ? Like a paste ??

Your bc is beautiful by the way - and i just love the name

Where in Bris are you Arcana ?

    * On the lino we just mop up with it as it gets rid of the scent. However on carpet I would wet the spot and lather the area and then wipe off.

    * Thank you. We think Baci is quite a pretty girl, but we're a bit bias in the household. :)

    * I'm in Bridgeman Downs which is on the Northside of Brisbane.

  8. I've always founds that Border Collies are very easy to house break and normally make errors only due to weather (as you've stated) or being unable to get out in time. If they make an error and you can catch them just correct. Then pop them outside til you can clean up the spot. I normally use a washing powder from the Supermarket called Bio Zet ... I think that is how you spell it.

You'll get it under control quick smart.

  9. Before I start I just want to say thank you to all those who helped me out on my last question about backchatting in regards to our Border Collie puppy, Baci.

But another couple of questions have popped up.

    1. What do you think is the best way to lead train your puppy to walk nicely beside you? Baci walks quite nicely at home but as soon as you take her out to the outside world it is simply too exciting, she really really pulls and I have to get this under control being none too tall as this is a worry.

    2. Baci has started to bark at birds and people. Is there a way to teach your puppy to be quiet after a few barks so the neighbours don't become aggravated?

    3. What is the best way to teach your puppy to come to you when they bolt out of the door?

Thank you for all your help in advance.

  10. I cant help - Kaos talks back to me all the time - i say no and she tells me where to go, but she has never tired to keep doing what ever it was she was doing!!

    Good luck

I think I will need the luck. I'm absolutely terrified that I will raise her badly as our last Border Collie was a breeze to train. I suppose it doesn't help that my Mother is critical of how I raise her.

  11. Hi Everyone,

I have recently bought a new puppy! Her name is Roxy and she is an Australian Terrior x Bichon Frise. I have just been doing alot of research about what to feed her. We are currently feeding her twice a day on just dry dog food - Royal Canin Puppy. But after reading so many posts I am unsure if this is what i should be feeding her. What is the best dry dog food i should be feeding her? Im leaning towards Eukanuba? Any thoughts on this type? Should I also be feeding her other food other than dry dog biscuts? I am now going to give her a raw chicken wing everyday round lunch time but was thinking of making her a meal at night time. What are your thoughts??? After alot of reading i thought of roo/chicken/beef mince with vegies and a bit of rice. should i cook it all up and mix together?? or just feed the meat raw?? Arrrrr im so confused there is sooo much info out there telling me to do so many different things hahah Anyones help would be greatly appreciated! What do you all feed your small dogs??

Thanking You so much and look forward to hearing from you

I've always believed in a little bit of the dry food, raw bones and then having some sort of home cooked meal e.g. cooked rice or pasta, mixed with raw mince and fruit and vegetables (generally I've found pumpkin, carrot, buck choi, apple or peas are pretty good). But just got to see what works for your pup. Good luck.

  12. If she is barking it's probably due to frustration - she doesn't understand what you mean.

See what they recommend at puppy school, if you want some other techniques feel free to PM me.

    Mel.

Thanks for the kind offer Mel. I'll see what happens at preschool later tonight.
