Stinger kills pit bull ANNIE SANSON May 28th, 2010 TERRITORIANS were warned yesterday about the threat of stingers after a pit bull dog was killed by a box jellyfish. Dr Steven Skov of the Centre for Disease Control said the stinger season officially ended on Monday. But he said jellyfish didn't follow the calendar and warned people to be cautious. Dr Skov said the unseasonal hot, wet weather was enough temptation for deadly stingers to loiter in Top End water. The pit bull died after being stung on the leg while playing in shallow water at a Darwin beach. Parap Veterinary Clinic vet Bree Clisby told the Northern Territory News it was only the second dog to be killed in a stinger attack in the past 15 years. "It is quite rare," she said. "Usually the fur gives the animal quite a lot of protection. "A dog has to be stung on an unprotected body part, like the mouth, or he must be really unlucky." But the death of the 25kg dog showed the power of jellyfish. "The owner brought the dog straight into the clinic, but he passed away within 30 minutes," the vet said. "It shows that the risk is out there." Dr Skov said Darwin beaches were still unsafe for swimming and people should not forget that box jellyfish injuries had been recorded in every month of the year. "You can't say that going into the water will be safe after a certain date," he said. "Little children are particularly at risk from jellyfish stings, so think very carefully about letting them enter the water and make sure they are well covered if they do." Dr Skov said in the event of a person or a dog being stung, it was important to douse the affected area with vinegar immediately and to see a doctor. Poor dog, and owner

Isn't this just typical of the current Gov't. In their "Dangerous Dog survey" they just had to add the questions on Restricted Breeds as well. Edited for typo -

I received another response of sorts today, got to be an ALP member. I refer to your email to the Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development concerning the Domestic Animals Amendment (Dangerous Dogs) Bill 2010. As the matter raised falls within the area of responsibility of the Minister for Agriculture and Small Business, The Hon Joe Helper MP, I have forwarded your email to the Minister for consideration and direct response. Like, Joe Helper is going to respond I think not Might send an objection from one of my dogs maybe then they'll take more notice -

I have only received 3 responses from my email sent to both the MLA's and MLC's Honestly thought a few more would have responded even just to acknowledge receipt. These have been Bill Sykes, Ted Baillieu and Bruce Atkinson. How is everyone else fairing? -
Ipswich has canine identity crisis From: AAP May 24, 2010 4:34PM IPSWICH City Council near Brisbane is doggone confused. A Supreme Court decision has bequeathed it about 126 legal problems it could do without. The council has legally registered around 126 American Staffordshire terriers which the Supreme Court in Queensland has deemed are actually American pit bulls. The problem is, pit bulls are illegal in Ipswich under state and local laws. The city's health and regulation committee chairman Andrew Antoniolli said the redefinition of the American Staffordshire was the result of a drawn-out court case on the Gold Coast. "We are concerned that we have at least 126 of the 30,000 dogs registered in Ipswich which were identified on their registration as American Staffordshire terriers,'' Mr Antoniolli said. However, the Supreme Court has deemed they are actually the same breed as American pit bulls. The American pit bull terrier breed has been implicated in a number of serious and sometimes fatal dog attacks on people, as well as on other animals. For the time being the registrations of American Staffordshire terriers will remain while Ipswich council seeks advice. "We understand the Department of Infrastructure and Planning has sought legal advice and will forward that advice to councils for their information once they receive it,'' Mr Antoniolli said. "We eagerly await that advice and will maintain the status quo until we hear from them.'' Mr Antoniolli said the court ruling would also impact on other councils in Queensland which have taken a similar stand on the breed, or breeds. And spare a thought for the 126-odd American Staffordshire terriers. Under Queensland law, pit bulls, if that's what the "staffies'' are, must be desexed.

This survey was posted on the Victorian Government DPI website back in January 2010. The thing that made my blood boil was that it was supposed to be a survey on "dangerous dogs", but they couldn't help themselves, they just had to add a couple of double loaded questions on Restricted Breeds as well. Seems this government doesn't even know the difference, yet it's the same political party that bought in BSL in this and every other state in Aust. I tried to contact the person whose name appeared at the bottom of the survey at the time, They worked for the Fisheries Dept or I should say used to. When I inquired as to why someone from Fisheries would be a contact for a DD survey, I was informed that this person may have shown an interest. I was flabbergasted to say the least. Seems they had gone to work for Murry Golburn water, so I tried them and their HR dept had never heard of them. Suppose I'd be hiding to if my name was put on the worldwide web attached to garbage like that. -

I am absolutely gobsmacked. It sems the only animal this government would be happy to see people owning is one purchased from Tandy. "THIS GOVERNMENT HAS GOT TO GO" Time to put pen to paper again. -
I have added an American Pit Bull Terrier key ring (pewter) to this offer if anyone is interested.
