  1. I have 2 dogs, and I love them dearly

but if they are capable of this type of aggression, I am sorry, its just not safe

Regardless, if I have them locked up or whatever.

I do not want to be responsible for the severe injury to a child like this.

sometimes, things happen, a child may not make the best judgement, but your dog should not react in that way. If it does, it should not be in suburbia.

  2. I actually think some of you are being quite mean to Matthew B.

he is only saying, what most of the general public are saying, after the death of a child ...

Instead of mocking him, or even when some of you aren't mocking him, you call his argments stupid, and say, "what don't you get... " quite aggressive...

You won't win your points this way ..

  3. Yep, I got bitten when I was 14 (I am now 47), but there was no warning at all

I was and remain a dog lover, and this dog, was well known to me,

I have no idea what set it off, I was patting him, down at his level, and all of sudden bam, just latched on my face

still have scars now, faded ...

so,yes, some dogs do give warnings, but not all, and some just do snap

    who knows why

  4. If I have missed any or if there are any on list that are wrong please comment.

I actually find this list interesting ...

the list posted earlier from the paper, was the last 5 years, so picks up from where this list leaves off

and it is showing more pitbull crosses involved in attacks in the last 5, then showing in your list.

Why?? is it because they are more widely owned... what do you think the reasons are

  5. Sorry, I just don't think the argument of its not a purebred Pit bull is helping your cause

they are being identified as pitbull crosses, to the general public they look like pitbulls, they seem to have pitbull in them...

yes, it is a mongrel, but that is not what the general public are hearing or seeing

they are not seeing a labrador cross killing a child, they are seeing a pitbull cross doing that,

It is about being factual. If it was a cross breed then it was not an APBT. Simple.

So now to eradicate cross breeds?

Isn't it factual though that a lot of these attacks, have Pitbull in the breed ....

the dog was identified as Rotweiller in one, if it was a labrador cross that would be factual ... it is a Pitbull cross, its factual

just because its not a purebred pitbull ... doesn't mean, you can argue, it wasn't a pitbull

  6. How do you do that?

yes, clearly it would more effective, but who makes that call on the wrong or right person to own a dog ?

By licensing owners, by enforcing EXISTING registration and desexing laws and by educating people about how to buy and raise dogs.

And by tossing the book hard at the head of anyone who fails to act responsibly as a dog owner. Starting now.

The "wrong" sort of owners can study up and pass a test

I agree with the enforcing EXISTING registration and desexing laws

  7. The community fear is being fueled by this very real, recent news item. I know that "banning dogs breeds doesn't stop dog attacks". Stopping dog attacks is a huge issue and you can't fix it in one step but you can make a step to stop people keeping the wrong type of dog. If the 30 year old male didn't have the dog, the little girl would be alive today. I am against BSL in theory, but I think when dogs start killing kids it is crisis time.

We can also make a step to stop the wrong kind of people having any dog. Frankly I think that would be far more effective, don't you?

    How do you do that?

yes, clearly it would more effective, but who makes that call on the wrong or right person to own a dog ?

  9. But they are putting these attacks up, which are pretty serious

    and that is not helping

  10. People do grasp it PF

but they are seeing statistics, and there has been incidents in Australia in the last couple of years, where these powerful sort of dogs, have severely injured and now killed someone

that is what they are grasping

yes, there can be all sorts of reasons for why they are doing it, but the simple fact is, these dogs, in the wrong hands, can cause far more damage then other breeds

  11. I do see the other side of the coin and thank you Bulldogforeva for your response, because it was balanced ... :)

and I realise that stats in the US, don't equate to here

but the news was showing terrible attacks from Australia in the last couple of years, and they are hard to defend.

I don't really know much about pit bulls, as in, not having come in contact with a lot, all I really know them is from Dog Whisperer, and I love them

I also do not want to see entire breed of any dogs banned, but I am just saying, people can't just discount the statistics...

anyhow, I don't know the answer, I guess it all comes to education, and strong ownership ... but I don't see that happening for a long time

  12. I am going to put my head on the chopping block

but I don't think, the blatant, defense of pitbulls, helps at all... or saying, all dogs can bite, etc, etc. why don't they put a fluffy dog up, blah, blah, blah... because even if a crazy maltese terrier got loose, and ran into my house, it is not going to kill me, or sever an arm... how do you counter these... I am just trying to play devils advocate.

A lot have discounted statistics, but clearly, there is something in those ... even even if they are only half true.

just seems people here, jump automatically to the dogs and the breeds defense, without acknowledging, their may be a problem

    I don't think that helps

you shout down people who put statistics up, but then pull out the statistics that support your claim

I don't know what the answer, but sheer bloody mindness on either side of the argment is going to help

  13. But how do you even implement a ban on all Pitbull Crosses? Who decides which dog is a Pitbull cross and which is a Staffy or Amstaff cross? Or a Cane Corso cross?

You can't it is beyond impossible. Ridiculous.

Simple. Round up anything with a big head, smooth coat and weighing over 18kg that isn't ANKC registered and kill the lot. Anything red or brindle will be first in line.

And don't think it can't happen.

Exactly! does no one remember what happened in QLD??

Thousands of innocent dogs killed, because of the way someone thought they looked, THOUSANDS!

    really, 1000's

  14. Look, I think the pitbull is a beautiful dog, with the right owner,

but can we really ignore, statistics totally like that .....

even the review of deaths in the SMH article, showing the amount of people involved in attacks in Australia in the last couple of years is disturbing..

    Recent attacks by Pitbulls
