  1. Surely Nekhbet though you are aware there are other options when training an aggressive dog other than choke it, or cuddle it and give it food Yeah, I have to agree with Huski here. There is a ton of options between cuddles and food and cutting off a dog's air supply. To answer the original question, I think Milan is a tv personality. I think he sits in the same genre as Steve Irwin, in that a certain kind of person finds the macho shenanigans entertaining and/or impressive. However, if you're a serious student of animal behaviour you're not out there wrestling the poor buggers on prime time. Defenders of both point to their work saving animals, detractors point to the bad example and crazy merchandising. It's like a religious war now, and so I try not to get sucked in. For me it's not so much a matter of what i think of his methods, as it is a matter of spending time on the methods of those trainers I get the most out of for my dogs. He's not one of them. I think his advice about being calm and assertive is good, however he doesn't recognise in his TV programs that most of the people he is dealing with need a 6 month retreat at a tai chi school or 12 months of psychotherapy before they even get close to being able to emulate his own calm assertiveness on a consistent basis.
  2. Hard to say without a picture. You should be able to see the last three ribs, but they shouldn't protrude. Sometimes younger dogs can be a bit ribby because it's hard to keep weight on them. I look at other things to work out if they are unhealthily underweight - ie, overall condition, coat shine, muscle tone, etc. Edited to include a photo of a famous and beautiful bitch in what I think is perfect condition: Bayt Shahin Impulse, CC, CM
  3. Salukis, The whole appearance of this breed should give an impression of grace and symmetry and of great speed and endurance coupled with strength and activity to enable it to kill gazelle or other quarry over deep sand or rocky mountain. The expression should be dignified and gentle with deep, faithful, farseeing eyes I think we have elegance and beauty which are an important part of the breed type but we're struggling with the performance ability that should sit beneath it. I wish we had more smooths in the country so that judges were more familiar with them. I think we're being good about introducing new gene pools to Australia. Movement is all over the place, sometimes quite literally. I'd like to see judges be more exacting about movement, and drop the flashy stuff that isn't balanced and true (and the lame stuff). Also, I'm sure we aren't the only breed fancy cursing the "show it like an Afghan" trend... I'd like to see fewer fat dogs. We don't have as much coat to sculpt with as some breeds but you can hide a multitude of sins by keeping the dog "well covered". I really dislike it. Some judges will have a word about it, many are accustomed to the seal on stilts look and award it.
  4. It's also in the letter everyone got, second sentence of the first paragraph. I am a voting member of DogsNSW and also have pretty much zero interest in factions and fighting so unless someone can demonstrate to me that the guy should be removed, I will vote in favour of the status quo.
  5. your problem being, if you do not vote then by obstaining you are by default letting the one who started this one less to prevent them gaining their aim soooo difficult decision is it not Well, quite. If you read my post again you'll see I'm not suggesting I'll abstain.
  6. I don't bother with places where I know there is a high likelihood that someone I care about is going to get hurt, and that includes puppies in leash free public spaces. Protecting your dog is about making good decisions about where you go, just as you would not suggest a 10 year old walk down a king's cross alleyway at 3am on a Saturday morning. Still, even if you make good decisions you may still find yourself in a situation where your dog is being monstered by another dog. Body blocking, pulling yourself up to full height and yelling gruffly "GO HOME!" has worked for me before. You could say "Red Frogs!" it's more the tone and presence you're after that says "do not f*** with me". I would not touch another person's dog unless I felt I really, really had to, and I would be very careful. As others have mentioned, some dogs will react to being grabbed by the collar and dogs are faster than humans. Also, it's like disciplining someone else's child - risky when it comes to interacting with feral humans too.
  7. The difficulty I still have with it is that there has been no official allegation of impropriety that I am aware of. All I have is this letter that says nothing. I am not going to vote to remove someone that people have voted in without some kind of credible information that suggests I should do otherwise. Credible information does not include gossip on the internet.
  8. Yesterday Garry Dryburgh's Std Poodle won the group at the 5,6,7 Club. Think runner up in group was also a poodle. Don't know anymore, sorry.
  9. I was at my mother's house recently. At one point Jadir opened her sliding door while I was helping my sister with a job application in another part of the house - he's a bugger with sliding doors, unless they are locked with a key they are fair game. I didn't know he'd got out, didn't think about the door as a possible escape point and my mother only has a stock fence with a mob of roos behind the fence most of the time. So, I am an idiot. Fortunately tho' Mum called his name and recalled him and he came back inside to her. She was gobsmacked as her SWFs don't. I suppose that is why we train recall, for those idiot moments where you don't think or drop the lead. ;) A few times during the visit she commented on how well behaved they are. I obsess over everything that isn't perfect (like the recent thread about my dog barking) and tend to forget that most of them time they are better behaved than your average dog. So I had a "OK, actually you two are not that bad" moment which was nice. On another note entirely, my bitch worked out who the "soft touch" was in the family (my sister) and set up a fishing spot near her. Sis was horrified that I make them sit or drop before getting treats - LOL! So cruel! ;) What I was interested in tho' was how quickly the dogs picked up on which human was the weakest link.
  10. Afghan coats vary a lot, and what works well on one might not work that well on another. You could try asking in the Afghan breed chat thread - more likely to get lots of 'ghan owners seeing your question there. We use Laser Lites.

  13. Two issues I think, one is dog parks the other is freaking out. I agree with the others that there are some things that should worry us as dog owners and your average dog park certainly falls into that category. I'd not take any of mine to a dog park and mine are much bigger than yours. On the other hand, even if you're responsible and walk your dogs on lead all of us at some time experience a heart stopping moment when out with our dogs in public. It is a useful skill not to panic and to have some skills that give you confidence so you don't panic. There isn't an easy answer to it but training your dog and training yourself to train your dog goes a long way.
  14. Was this in Sydney? Quite possibly they were siblings of the pups that prompted me to start the thread.
  15. I think this shows a lot of compassion and insight. People contribute to the breed in different ways, and sometimes breeding a top winning all breeds show pony is not actually contributing to the breed anyway.
  16. Because I am crazy busy, I am putting in a time wasting poll. Just to clarify, my kids are all Champions and we don't do Pointscore so this is not a personal question. Was just struck by someone saying after feeling let down by anther person in her breed "and I even kept mine out of the ring so she could title hers and she still etc etc"

  18. You won't get your numbers until tomorrow or Wednesday because they were posted today.
  19. I think the line about independent thinkers is probably designed to eliminate those who want a dog that has a cocker style shiny brown eyed faithful devotion to whatever the boss is doing. I think eliminating people who want a dog who hangs on their everyone word and movement is a good idea, but it's a shame to do it in such a crude way. I have heard it said better, ie, it is tough to win the respect and devotion of a Saluki/Afghan, but once you have, it's a very strong relationship. As to housebreaking, the more I've seen and trained, the more I have come to the conclusion that what matters most of all is how the breeder raises them. If they are raised indoors and housetrained as soon as they are up and about they are pretty easy. If they are left in kennels or crates in their own filth right from the get go they can be extremely difficult to house train.
  20. Too much dog for someone not used to hounds I think and I would not recommend that someone new to them pick them as a dog you can offleash run with. You really can't choose a sighthound if offleash running in built up areas is what you want to do. You could try PMing sighthounder. He has a Pharaoh and a Saluki. I didn't recommend Salukis even tho' they can run for ages because they are a challenging first dog and offleash running is really out of the question. I think Pharaohs are similarly challenging. Edited to say that time of day doesn't really matter. A car or a cat or a roo or a rabbit or a SWF can appear from nowhere at any time of day.
  21. What I've done in the past is locate a member of the committee and say "judge needs water/panadol/insect repellent/whatever". If they ask me to run it down to the ring I will, you don't have to interact with the judge and I don't see a problem with interacting with the steward. I have given pens to stewards whose pen has run out and gone and got ribbons when group is about to start and done other things like that. Figure that is about the show not sucking up to the judge. If someone thinks a steward can influence their judge they should have a think about why they entered IMO. And I know what a pain in the neck it is as a steward to be stuck in the ring and needing someone to run a message. I know people can be stupid, but if you didn't give the judge a scone and bikkies they'd probably make something up about you sleeping with them anyway!!! Better to go with the benign option I do think it is bad form to chit chat to the judge from ringside if you are exhibiting under them. Plenty of time for chats after the judging. EFS
  22. It's not just the hunting part that you can test tho'. I think there are some things we could do right now that would improve things using our existing tests. For example, I think Dalmatians, sledding breeds and most of the sighthounds should have to pass the endurance test to earn their Ch title. Perhaps others too. That would certainly sort out some of the iffy conformation we have now in Salukis and it would make people take heart problems more seriously. Speaking more broadly, people seek 'working line' dogs as companions for a wide range of reasons and some of us have done it because of the issues discussed by Jed and PF. However, you have to go into it with a pretty stubborn belief in your own vision, as it is certainly not rewarded in the show ring.
