that's funny. i was reading this thread yesterday thinking how good my doggies were and how they didn't need a wash for a while yet. lo and behold i come home last night with one of them covered in mud and had to take her into the shower to get washed. and then while washing her thinking of this thread and how nifty it would be if i did have a hand held shower nozzle instead of just relying on brute strength to force my 30kg wolfhound cross to stay still under the faucet so I could wash off the mud.

The first few nights that Fred was let in the bedroom to sleep with us, there was one morning where I got woken up by him licking my face. I think I must've mumbled at him to let me sleep in and he's never done it since. He will sleep in with us beside me on the floor, but if I'm awake, he'll sit beside the bed patiently and will happily have his head patted or his neck scratched. If I get up early during winter when it's still dark he'll be very reluctant to leave the bedroom and go outside (understandably so) but otherwise he trots to the door when I get up so he can be let out to start the day.
Elsie, on the other hand is an entirely different kettle of fish.
The first night she got let in to sleep with us... she slept next to the bed and constantly fidgeted. Whenever she scratched herself, by default she'd be thumping the side of the mattress and waking us up.
In the morning at the first sign of stirring (even if it's just me rolling over) she will be in my face. All quick jabs - licks on the nose, shoving her head in my face, putting her wet nose in my eye, and then putting her feet on the mattress to try and get a better view of me. If you encourage her by giving her a pat, try and soothe her by petting her ears or just go "elsie! stop it!" she just gets more excited. I've resorted to holding her at arm's length, with my hand wrapped loosely around neck/chest.
If Fred then comes over for a cuddle she will push him aside to get back into Prime Spot. In fact now that I think about it, she pushes him away all the time whenever a cuddle is on offer. It's not just in the morning.
I always wanted a dog that would ask for cuddles in the morning (since Fred's so laid back and just lies beside the bed until we're ready to get up). But I think I got more than I asked for this time. There are moments in the morning where I hesitate to move in case she spots me and bounds over to attack me with licks. What's wrong with a decent sleep in I ask you???

thanks for the suggestions and advice dogmad!
yes she can access the rest of the backyard from the covered area.
unfortunately i'm not always home during the day, so i'm a bit worried that my rules won't stick so much?
she's basically house trained, but i think she just doesn't realise that the paved area isn't 'pooable'.
i came home today, and there was a little 'present' sitting in the said area =S
i think i might give the citronella a try and see if that discourages her.
in general i don't mind the dogs sitting on the verandah, i just don't want them doing their business there.
and thanks for the tip on the vinegar! =D
i will go look up your toilet training tips now =D
thanks so much!

So I noticed on the weekend that my great dane cross pees in the backyard verandah =/
we have a closed off verandah-type section next to the back door, where they spend most of their time. after feeding her one morning, i noticed she moved abt a metre away, just in front of the table where our bbq sits, squatted and proceeded to pee. i was quite shocked.
i'm not 100% happy that 1. she's peeing in covered areas, and 2. that she does it next to a 'food source' of sorts.
my bf argues that i can't do anything abt it, because well, she is technically 'outside'. and 'good luck' trying to train her.
but my wolfhound goes out into the yard to do his business. least i haven't caught him doing it under cover yet.
she's abt 14months old, so she's no longer really a puppy.
since we're both hardly home during the day it's not like i can catch her on a constant basis to correct her.
does anyone have any suggestions about what i can do to discourage this type of behaviour? or am i just getting too prissy? LOL.
any thoughts? any advice would be appreciated.
she is a bit of a troublesome one. i think being naughty is in her nature. she managed to disappear for a day when we took her off her lead during a walk, and we had to collect her from the pound =/
then there was the time we took a walk in the bush and she disappeared. ended up finding her on the way back - she'd gone across the other side of the fence, and refused to walk back. I had to go over and collect her. grrr.
she's a pound dog that's been in foster care for abt a month before we got her. and so far she's been with us for abt 3 weeks. i'm going to take both dogs to group obedience classes soon, and i half look forward to, and half shudder at the thought at how sociable (or anti-social as it may turn out to be) my dogs might be.
-
so i tried the bottles filled with dry kibble on the weekend. they LOVED them. when they first arrived, there'd be lots of rough and tumble, tearing at my bird netting and lots of chasies. in the last week or so, i've noticed they don't play as much and just mooch around, or lie out in the sun. these toys managed to fire them up for a little while =D
some pics attached for your amusement. note the ragged state of one of the bottles i found later. LOL.
Thanks for all your tips guys! the bottles worked like a charm! now i just have to go and get a tyre....
hrmm.. i just realised the pics come up really small. can anyone give me pointers abt how to post up bigger pics that don't take up much room on the forum? i remember i did this once a while ago, but i can't remember how i did it anymore.. =(
-
thanks for the tip netti. i'll see if i can get up the courage to go to the mechanic ppl and ask for a free tyre for my dog. maybe i can take him with me. biiiig wolfhound. how could they say no? LOL
we took him with us when we went to get a new car, and you should've seen all the male salesman fawn over him. grown men making kissy noises to a dog. *guffaws*
-
seems like tyres are all the rage. maybe i can pick up a cheapie at a garage sale =D
my wolfhound pulled down the fence between the veggie garden and the rest of teh backyard yesterday. he managed to pull out a huge log too, and i notice there are already marks left.. LOL.
i'm collecting the milk bottles now, but am having trouble figuring out what kind of rope i should use to tie it up together.
cricket balls are better huh? i'll have to go check it out. right now tennis balls don't last at all...
-
LOL. Hi Dachsbracke. Cute banana =)
I'll have to see abt the rubber replacement tyre. i ended up finding a place that sold a reasonably priced kong ($20). boy was that a mistake. LOL. he spent the first few minutes (say 15) gnawing at it. Then realised it was really hard to get the food out.
These days it just sits in the corner =/
do'h!
guess it just goes to show. you really should never spend that much money..... LOL. thank goodness i didn't spend more than $20.
-
I got my L size Kong in Big W for $15. It's going to last for years so it's definitely a good investment
$15 is a great price for a kong!! i ended up giving in and bought a L sized puppy kong. cost me $21 incl shipping from ebay.
and just in time too, he's starting to gnaw on the furniture!!!
i gave it to him this evening, and he was happily engrossed for a while. hasn't made a dent in it, although has given the food inside a good licking. he seems to play for a little while and then let it go. what was even funnier was when he came inside and i gave the kong to him, and he carried it into the study, before coming back out again. *guffaws* i think he thinks the study is like his secret hidey place.
i will need to go and check out big w one weekend and see what other variety of toys they have.
thanks for all your continued suggestions guys!! much appreciated.
-
thanks guys for all your creative suggestions! I will definately try them all out.
bub - i think my fred swallows the plastic. I've noticed bits and pieces of things around his toy, but in general, whenever i look over, he's chewing... so i'd assume he has, rather than hasn't. and i don't really like the idea of him eating plastic.
it's amazing how i have to keep an eye on everything in the garden. i'm not at home during the day, so only get a real chance to look through the garden on the weekend, and it's amazing the stuff i find. tops of socks (that somehow magically appear out of nowhere - when you've sworn you've collected ALL the washing), chewed up garden tools, and remnants of plastic bags.
i had some netting that i originally ahd to cover some plants, which my wolfhound and great dane cross managed to turn into a tug toy. come to think of it, i haven't seen it for a while. i wonder what they did with it =/ LOL
atm the two dogs are also slowly tearing up the back door mat. good thing it only cost me $4 or I'd be pretty peeved. lol. the garden's also looking a bit of a shambles. but that's to be expected. we've only just moved into this new house, and their digging sure helps me decide what i want to keep and what's not worth saving.
Fifi and riff - the bottles sound like a great idea. a good way to help the recycling process along. *grin*

HI,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question.
I've got a wolfhound puppy and am trying to get him toys that will keep him occupied. When he was first introduced to Tennis balls they used to last him for a little while, but since then he has managed to demolish a tennis ball in less than 5 mins time.
Rawhide chews kept him busy all night, but I'm not 100% sure I want to give him things that he will eat. I just want to give him a toy that he can play with but are fairly indestructible.
I've seen him play around a little with a string toy but it doesn't seem to interest him all that much. i bought a squeaky plastic bone toy that again only lasted abt 5 mins before he managed to chew into it. And I felt compelled to take it off him because I didn't want him to eat plastic.
I've heard about Kongs, and these specialty tyre toys, but they were all priced at exorbitant prices of $50+. I've seen a few on ebay for $30 but I'm still hesitant.
I'm your $20 or less kinda gal. Is this asking for too much? Are there any particular places you would recommend for good quality low budget toys for big dogs? Or do I just have to suck it in and spend that $50-$70?
Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
-
thanks guys! I will go check it out. hopefully they do late evening classes because i don't get home till late.
I know what you mean about the cold daisy. i walked my dogs tonight and so didn't want to. the wind was howling so loudly. when we were walking with the wind it almost felt like we were being pushed along! so glad to get back inside afterwards.

Hello , I have a very large and stinky boy who needs washing. In warmer weather I have an attachment I use with the garden hose to suds him up and rinse him off. But obviously this is not suitable in winter. I've been to "do it yourself" hydrobath places but the baths are too small for my dog and he seems all cramped and doesn't like it al at all. Our local groomer said her bath was too small for him too. Does anyone know of a mobile groomer in the Blue Mountains/western sydney area that could fit a wolfhound in their bath? - Wally
do you need to use a bath? I'm planning on giving my wolfhound his first bath tomorrow (8 months). I just envisioned soaping him up outside, and then hosing him down. i figure if i do it early enough i can wash him, towel him off and let him sit in the sun to dry out?

Hi Guys,
We just picked up a Wolfhound puppy from the pound (he's about 7 months) and we want to start doing some obedience classes. We're currently trying to housetrain him on our own, and it's a slow process. I think some formal training would help.
Does anyone know of any good training places in the Southern Highlands, preferably near Mittagong? I've tried just doing google and yellowpages.com.au searches, but I'm not coming up with much.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!
Reccomendations For Boarding Kennels In Goulburn Area
in General Dog Discussion
Posted
Hi All,
I need to go up to Orange in a few weekends time and wanted to board my two wolfhound crosses in the Goulburn area.
I've googled and come up two boarding kennels - Pawtails and Whispering Pines.
I've done a quick search here for comments/recommendations but results were dated back to 2007/8.
I wondered if anyone had any comments re which one they prefer or any experiences they would like to share?
My pups usually get boarded at Yass Pets and I've been very happy with them. This time around I didn't want to take the detour to Yass as I'll be driving up (as opposed to hubby) so I want to reduce the amount of time I'm behind the wheel.
Any thoughts or comments appreciated.
Thanks!
