  1. My 2 boys are

Harrison - named after George Harrison

Dylan - named after Bob Dylan

ETA - KHM, Eric Clapton is my absolute GOD but I wouldn't saddle a dog with either name

  2. - ummmm,as a veteran of 30+ years of Poodle owning - can't think of ANY thing :D

Don't get a poodle if you don't want your husband stolen and to be simultaneously evicted from the bed?? rofl1.gif

OK - you got me there  Mr.Poodlemum had never had a dog of ANY sort till he met me - now he bends people's ears with the wonders of Poodles.

  3. I'd like to say please don't get any animal if you want to get angry and psyical with it!

All the points in the OP......are relevant to Pointers with the addition of:

    Dont get a Pointer if:

You want your washing to stay on the line

    Holes in your lawn

Breed Standard says Coat: evenly distributed - all over your house, furniture, clothes and car

 as a former GSP owner, I can certainly relate to that

Don't get a poodle if you don't intend doing much grooming (and that includes plucking hair from their ears)

Don't get a poodle if you can't stand a dog that barks and jumps up (trainable - but nevertheless an issue for many)

Don't get a poodle if you don't enjoy walking

Don't get a poodle if you don't like playing games with your dog

Don't get a poodle if you're a push-over (they're very smart and will be running your life before you know it)

Don't get a poodle if you're the kind of person who needs a lot of time alone

Don't get a poodle if you really want a baby, not a dog (none of this itsy bitsy poochy woochy stuff - they are smart dogs that thrive on work)

But do get a poodle if:

you like a dog that comes when called - and with gusto!

you like a dog that trains well (is both easy and fun to train)

you like a dog that doesn't shed

you like small dogs, or medium sized dogs, or big dogs (there's a poodle size to suit everyone)

you like a dog that enjoys being physically close to you

you like a dog that really, really likes you

And don't worry too much about that funny curly haired look. It grows on you. Permanently. :)

I loved the look of Poodles from the get-go. I would just say Don't get a Poodle if:

  4. I bought "Give Your Dog A Bone" back in the 90's and have fed my dogs according to Ian Billinghurst's recommendations ever since - they are certainly a lot healthier for it. I don't get the commercially-made BARF patties, but feed main raw meat, raw bones & veges.

Hey poodlemum, I have bought 2 of his books The BARF diet and The pup one, looking forward to them coming :-) .. I feed our boy Leading Raw Guide Dog approved patties mainly due to this is what the breeder had him on and it is convienent for me at this time and I'm a bit scared to go it alone lol.. Hoping after reading his books I will feel more confident :-)

But I joined a yahoo group raw feeding puppies and bloody hell I got slammed for feeding patties and and got slammed for getting the books lol so I left the group ... Glad someone else has read his book and I am hoping to get a lot out of them :-)

some of those people on Yahoo are pretty intense  The only reson I never went for the patties was because, with 5 Standard Poodles, it worked out a bit exxy

  6. Just down the road abit is Northern Obed dog club at Moonee Ponds.

Committee, instructors are still deciding if they will take on Rally.

Not sure if Northcote is affiliated with the VCA????

    BB

I know they WERE affiliated when I was trialling - went to a couple of trials there.

  7. It went really well...the first one i was like omg it is here had tiny little freak out because it didnt breath the secound the bag was broken screamed out to hubby to come help then i looked back and pup was doing little squeels (big relief then messaged to self now stay calm :D ...pup was all clean and when it didn't drink immediately when placed near teat another minor little freak out and call to breeder (who assured me it was perfectly normal and to just relax...thought okay cool will send out a text message no sooner finished that received reply and looked at mum just as another pup started arriving 20mins after first arrival...followed 6 mins later by number 3 (was way to busy to even think about having a stress by that time lol)...chord 3 chewed a touch to short and bleeding so tried to tye with floss (yer right hands shaking, puppy wiggling not a chance)...so put bull clip on but mum kept licking at it and knocking it...just then breeder calls for update and says to grap a small cloth and squeeze cord really tight for a minute or so which works a treat :-)an hour past before next pup....so far 2 girls and 2 boys so very excited...then another hour to relax and sort things out and number 5 another little boy arrives...an hour later another boy followed half hour later by number 7 another little girl...at this point i am thinking this is no where near as bad as i had imagined but sadly things did not continue to go smoothly and despite her breeder calling numerous times and getting updates and telling us what to do next three hours later the last little one arrived not breathing and despite spending 30mins trying to revive it...it wasnt to be...sadly we had to admit defeat :o

What a gorgeous litter! Don't feel too bad about losing one - my Vet told me a long time ago that there's always a reason when 1 doesn't make it. :rainbowbridge:

Be glad you have 7 healthy pups & mum is coping well.

  8. My main bit of advice - as The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy says:

    DON'T PANIC

I have now seen 8 litters of puppies whelped & the best thing you can do is be relaxed so the bitch is relaxed. Stay with her, talk to her & encourage her but don't assume that you are going to have problems. The 1st litter I bred was 18 years ago - I had read EVERYTHING possible and was a real mess - the 2nd was much easier :D.

If the breeder of your bitch is mentoring you, ask if it's ok if you ring her when the whelping starts. The breeder of my bitch was great - she was in NZ, though, so we ended up with a BIG phone bill!

As others have said, good to ensure your vet will be available after hours - my bitches always seemed to whelp at some ungodly hour of the morning.

  9. Personally I think it's best for the dogs to mature before desexing but easier for the owner if they are desexed earlier.

edited to make it clear - desex the dogs - not the owners :o

 Although, there are SOME dog owners.....

  10. Why is everyone in such a hurry to have the boys castrated?

I tell my puppy buyer to wait until they are at least 12 months old.

My male is 7 years old and I have 4 females he has never had a stud and no accidental matings.

No, he is NOT aggressive either, he is very easy to live with NOT like my bitchy females always eyeballing each other.

I think you guess I love him the best

We are not going to be in any rush, my hubby actually said if there is no medical or behaviou reason we will leave him be..

There is, I believe, a slighly higher risk of prostate problems in entire males who are not being "used". My ex & I had a stud dog who hadn't been used for a couple of years & got an abcess on his prostate gland. Unfortunately, the abcess burst and he died

I would not recommend de-sexing a large breed dog, such as a GR, before 12 months, however.

  11. I often wonder about the prey diet some people put their dogs on, is it meat only because this thread proves dogs eat alot more than just meat.

I think the thought of dogs just eating meat is very primal....dogs have access to every food under the sun now... back in the day im not so sure they had ready access to carrots and pears :) meat would be the only thing running around.... I think this thread confirms that dogs like fruits and veggies a lot more then we do!!

Dr.Ian Billinghurst, who wrote "Give Your Dog A Bone", says that wild dogs would consume the stomach contents of their kills, thus getting vegetables.

As does Dr Bruce Syme of VAN. Yet there are also many wolf and canine experts that state that dogs/wolves leave the vegetation in their stomach and intestines alone. To each his own, but I would be inclined to believe the latter.

I had a bitch who was an inveterate rabbit hunter & I can assure you that she ate the WHOLE rabbit, stomach contents & all

  13. The other night we had a BBQ and I offered a bit of lettuce to all the dogs. 3 took it but promptly spat it out but Kijana chewed hers up. She looked so funny, like she didn't really like it but was going to eat it anyway, lol. She had more after and ate it the same way too. Other than that my dogs also like banana, strawberries, apple sometimes carrot. Haven't tried alot of stuff. I've mixed stuff in their dinner that they ate but that's not the sama as giving it to them on it's own.

 I know THAT look well - my boy, Lennon, would do that - chew with the most disgusted look on his face, but damned if he was going to risk anyone else getting it!

My boys will eat pretty much anything - not too keen on brussels sprouts or lettuce, though. My old GSP used to LOVE apple cores.

Tralee - I have heard that about grapes, too.

  14. For those that crate your dogs while you're away how long do you crate them for?

I think its appalling when I hear people who crate their dogs for hours on end (ie a whole work day  )

How is it any different to crating the dog for 12hrs overnight? The dog doesn't know the difference, just knows it needs to pee when you get home

Ours are outside during the day, at night one is crated and the other had run of the house (until he broke the curtains) so now he's down the back in the 'dog room'

Exactly - don't judge people if you don't know the circumstances - my boys are quite happily crated for 12 hrs, even longer, overnight. Only VERY occasionally they might me crated for as long during the day - I think this preferable to leaving them outside where my psycho neighbour might get to them :(

  15. Find your signature interesting - I've always pronounced the name Mah REM ah & now I know the correct pronunciation

    Hi

Well, if you are ever talking to Italians and you get them repeat the word 'Maremma' you will quite clearly hear the correct pronunciation.

    Regards

ahhh - I didn't realise they were an Italian breed :)

OP - sorry for railroading the thread

  16. 1. She said she would sell you a dog with Limited Registration...... Normal

    2. Pup was turning out better than she expected.......offered you a discount for co- ownership...nothing too sinister.

I asked the seller if she would do it have all the pups except one when me boy turned 5/6 yrs when she said no it was over...but i am new to this kind of thing another breeder did not want to sell me a pup but an already over bred dog with similar conditions now that i know this is not unusual i am fine with it so yeah thanks.

What would you 'carry on his line with' in regards to a female dog?

If my Babel fish is working correctly, you wanted to keep one of the puppies from a litter when the dog was 5 or 6.

    The breeder said no.

Well, that's usually between you and the owner of the Dam.

Another breeder wanted to sell you an older dog, an expeienced stud dog, but wasn't going to allow you to keep a pup from your own litter either.

So now you think that all this is normal practice.

    It isn't

It seems to me that you want a puppy and can wait 5 or 6 years but you also want to breed it yourself.

Lastly, on this forum, you need to couch your comments in a much less "breeder bashing" fashion.

This is a 'help' forum so if you still want a puppy, then get one without conditions attached.

However, wanting a dog so that you can have one puppy in a few years time as an added extra is the wrong reason to be putting to responsible dog owners and ethical breeders.

    Good Luck

    Px

    Love it!
