  1. I have an 8 yr old scottie who I adopted when he was 6yrs old. I can honestly say they are not the breed for everyone and would not suit most people. He is a very stubborn little dog and extremely strong for his size. I would not recommend them for the elderly or anyone who has young children due to their strength. If you are not careful when feeding him you will lose your fingers. I think he had learnt some bad behaviors during the 6 yrs before I got him and while he is great with my other dog and my cat, he can be a pain with strange dogs. Some he likes, some he doesn't and you never really know what you will get, although I think a lot of this is because he just gets overly excited when he sees another dog. During the day he prefers to be outside so that he can do his "fence patrol" every 10 minutes just to make sure nothing has changed. But at night he is like a cuddly teddy bear and will sleep in your lap all night. To me he is a high energy breed and suited to people on acreage or with large backyards and they really need a good long walk each day. While most of the time he is a delight to have, sometimes you really do wonder if there is a brain in there at all. I swear he feels no pain. He really is a large boisterous dog stuck in a small body.

  2. Hi I have a 6yr old scottish terrier and a few days ago I noticed he has a raised red lump on the front of his leg which is aboout the half the size of a 5c peice. It is sore to touch, not fluidy but very solid. I have applied a poultice for a few days in case there was a foreign body but nothing has come out and I cannot see an entry site. Have now applied some yellow lotion I was thinking maybe an insect bite? It seems to have come up very quickly I would say about a wk. Any one have any ideas what it might be. If it's not better by Tuesday I think a trip to the vet might be in order.

  3. First of all thatnks to everyone who commented and for all the great ideas. I have some material left over some patterns more than others. You can pick what you want and if you want double layered or single. The blue/pink zebra pattern is fleece but not polar fleece but the same warmth. I can also make the old fashioned ones with the strap under the belly as shown below. If there is a specific plain colour you would like let me know and I will do my best to get it for you. Please also let me know if it is for a boy/girl so I know what length to make the chest in the zip up kind. The measurements I need are just the length of your dogs body for the old fashioned kind and for the zip up I need body length, girth going right around the dog and neck circumference as well as from the back of the front leg to where you would like the chest coverage to stop. Once you message me with these details I will message you back with price depending on size (starting at $20) and if there is enough material. Hope this all makes sense. Again thanks for everyones support! You guys are great!

  4. Hi guys I have recently made some dog coats and am wanting some opinions. Basically would you buy them and how much would you pay? Also if you wouldn't buy them why not? They are double layered polar fleece with a zip up back so they cover the whole body/chest area for extra warmth. Thanks guys

  5. Personally I think the cop acted with no human decency. Yes the dog barked at him but it didn't look like it was going to attack him. Why wasn't animal control called? These dogs should not have been on the loose and the fawn one was certainly more "aggressive" than the other. Surely there could have been another way to grab the beagle and wait until animal control could come with a pole.

  6. I dont think the majority of people do dislike the RSPCA at all, in fact the organisation is evidently well liked and respected in the broader community. Otherwise the million paws walk would be as huge as it is.

However, on a forum like DOL, you will naturally get some people who have had close and unsatisfactory dealings with other dog-related organisations, and in any 'chat' forum, where people can air (with anonymity if they choose) their strongest feelings, things will be posted that, while passionately put, and often repeated, may still just be minority veiws. Also, if you were somehow able to get a response from every single DOL member to your question, you would get a different outcome than if you just hear from the people who have something they actively want to share with everyone.

Maybe people who haven't worked behind the scenes need to take off their rose coloured glasses and go and volunteer there for a while and see what it's really like. The "general public" like them because they don't know the truth! I guarantee you if they did they would get no more community support.

  7. At the end of the day this daog is probably in pain and suffering and is up for sale. What happens when these people or the people who buy it get sick of it and the novelty has worn off. Or they lose their job and can't afford to care for a severely disabled dog any more? What is wrong with some people? This is why I don't work as a small animal vet nurse any more. Because the general human population are a bunch of selfish idiots who can't see the big picture and do the humane thing. This dog IS NOT leading a full happy life, I can guarantee it. Shameful and disturbing.

  8. I agree with Boston Girl. I had a Lab x that had hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and had 2 cruciates repaired. I spoke to specialists and none of them like sashas blend as a product. The dosage rates are incorrect and you actully need to feed 4x the recommended dose to get any benifits. There has also been research done to suggest the gut cannot adequatly digest sasha blend. I would use joint guard or cosequin ds. They are both the same just different brands. I would also get xrays done and get them analysed by a specialist as this is really a specialist field and they may be able to offer better solutions than your everyday vet. I also found physiotherapy to be very effective. I would also suggest you combine the joint guard/cosequin ds with cartrophen injections as they work better together. Cartrophen injections should also be monthly after the initial 4 week course. Hope this is helpful. Goodluck

  9. I agree with Varicool. Why isn't your dog on a preventative medicine? You state that she has a seizure every 6 - 8 weeks and she has been having seizures for 3 years or more. To me, that would definitely warrant preventatives.

Interesting it is given as a subcut injection too... I always thought it was iv or im? Also, why is it given after a seizure? Is there a risk of her clustering or going into status? Usually, the only reason you dose them up on diazapam is to prevent a cluster or to prevent status and if your dog only ever has one seizure, aren't you 'shutting the gate after the horse has bolted' so to speak?

pamlin is given as a subcut injection when she is having a siezure. It is hard to give it i.v and i.m is not preferred as it has some tissue reaction and it is also a large amount to put into a muscle and can cause severe pain afterwards. The vets i have spoken to tell me that dogs on phenobarb eat a lot more gain weight, become drowsey, inactive and causes damage to the bodies organs. You also have to increase the dose periodically because the body becomes used to the drug. Again until she is having bad seizures and more frequently I have been strongly advised by more than one vet not to treat with phenobarb yet.

  10. At the moment she is not on any medication, just a subcut injection of pamlin when she has her seizures. All the vets I have spoken to have said she her seizures aren't bad enough or frequent enough to warrant the effects of pheonobarb but I'm sure that day will come. I'm just lucky I'm always there when she has a fit i guess.
