  1. Maybe ask in the CKCS thread regarding coming into season, I always get good advice there. If it is any consolation, I still take my 8 month old boy out every couple of hours, but have finally been able to relax and not feel I have to keep my eye on him every minute!
  2. It is actually an ointment called Tricin. He's been on them for 2 and a half days and already looking sooo much better. Like Tilba, Shiraz always had a bit of eye poo, but it really was getting quite icky and smelly. Got another 8 or so days of this to go so here's hoping it clears up.
  3. Thanks for the replies. Visited the vet this afternoon. She put iodine in his eyes to see if there were any scratches and also looked at his eyelashes. All was clear there. So, he has been given a 10 day course of drops, 3 times a day (she thinks it is an infection). This is going to be fun! Shel72: Interesting about the chamomile. Bilbo Baggins: Haven't thought of showing him. He is a bit of a looker though if I do say so myself! This photo was taken a couple of days ago...
  4. Hi All, I've got an 8 month old CKCS. I've just returned from a 3 month overseas trip and have been amazed at how much he has grown. He looks gorgeous! The other thing I've found is how quickly he has taken to me again...there just has not been an issue. Dogs are loyal to whoever provides the walks and food I suppose?! Anyway, his eyes have always teared a little bit, but they are tearing a lot at the moment. On top of that, the smell is pretty awful. It was recommended to clean the eyes with some salt water. It has been a week or so now and nothing has really improved. Anyone experienced this problem? Trip to the vet?
  5. Yeah, my boy has just over 5 months and his breath smells pretty bad at the moment. Never smelt at all before now. He is definitely teething, we've been finding his baby ones all over the place! Hope it gets better soon...
  6. Thanks for the replies. Took him out around 10:15pm and then he wanted out at 5:10am (usually get up at 6:00). Could be the illness throwing him off his game a bit as he can typically hold on for 8 or so hours. We have him the stuff the VET prescribed (Scourban) late (around 9:15pm) and that might have not helped. We give him 2ml of that morning and evening. I'll give him his dose much earlier tonight and see if it makes a difference. Cheers...
  7. Hi Guys, Just wanting your opinion on something. Our 20 week old Cav gentleman named Shiraz sleeps in his crate all night. We have always had the door shut. The last couple of mornings he has woken up crying quite early, with today being 5:10am. We had to change his feeding times from 2 to 3 a day due to some pretty bad gastro (we were told smaller meals) and his final meal comes at 9:00pm and not 7:00pm. My usual procedure is to go to the toilet myself, turn the TV on, open the curtains and then go get him. Evidently, in that time Shiraz decided he was going to pee in the crate. Poor guy must have been busting! There is the background...now the questions! At 20 weeks, is it worth laying down some newspaper and keeping the crate door open at night? What are the pros and cons of this? Do you guys still keep your older dogs in their crate with the door shut? Any opinions or advice appreciated!
  8. When I get home from work, I casually put my bags down and stroll over to the laundry to get Shiraz out. I don't say anything to him. I do the same thing when leaving. I think he cries for a bit but then settles (have recorded him on a webcam and he is asleep for most of the day and has a little play with a kong for about 20 minutes). As for toilet training, I lay down some newspaper. He uses it now. We take him out every hour or so when at home and he is getting very good at it. No accidents for a few weeks, knock on wood. Finally, we tell Shiraz, "no biting" and a quick growl. His biting has really subsided but he was shocking from 8-12 weeks, although I think most puppies are like this. Enjoy...
  9. I'm no expert but I would say the diahhrea wasn't caused by you increasing the kibble content. If he is 8 weeks, you must have just got him home? Even a subtle change in diet (like treats) or even water (my boy was on tank water at the breeder, tap water with us) may cause diahhreah. I'd persist with the puppy food for a while before changing its diet (maybe chicken and rice until the runs subside). Good luck.
  10. I'm trying to have the same success with my 13 week old Cav. Sounds like the same scenario you describe with my boy. We average about 2 or 3 accidents inside per week. My partner and I pounce every time he goes near the door in the hope he is telling us he wants to go outside! Sadly, I think it has just been a coincidence. We treat him intermittently with a little bit of cabana when he goes outside (we take him out hourly). We'll just persist with this approach. Be curious to hear if you have any success...
  11. Just an update on Shiraz. I contacted the breeder who told me to stand firm and keep dishing up the dry food, removing it after 15 minutes. Whilst he ate some of it, most days he would skip a meal. The breeder said that they had a Cav who is a fussy eater also and would mix in a little of this dog roll types stuff you get from Coles. The suggestion was to try that after a couple of days if he still is being picky. We did that and hey presto, it was like flicking the "eat" switch on him. For the first time he was eating all of his food. Now, fingers crossed he maintains his new found appetite!
  12. Yep, I did that. I'd take my Cav out to do his business and spend the whole time trying to pull him off all my new natives. It became a nightmare, so I bought some stakes, cable ties and puppy wire (though this probably wont suit a Border Collie). Put up a 15 meter fence in about an hour and a half. When Shiraz goes outside now, I can sit back on the chair and relax, which is a good thing at 6:15 in the morning! Oh, the only thing was he loves eating tan bark...swallowed one the other night and was coughing and spluttering a bit. Was at the vet this morning getting his 12 week shot and she seemed to think he was ok. I now am watching him like a hawk again! Hope you can find a suitable solution.
  13. We have been so lucky with our Cav, I braced myself for what you are going through. He has had two bad nights in 2 and a half weeks, the rest of the time he has slept from 11-6. For the first week we had a ticking clock and the BBC playing. He sleeps in his crate and to get him used to it, we put him in there several times during the day for 1 hour stretches. Crate training has been brilliant, can't speak more highly of it. On the nights where he was crying, we ignored him...pretty rough but we got through it. In terms of feeding, we put the food down for 15 mins and then remove it. It is a morning, afternoon and supper feeding schedule. He is very hit and miss with his food, most days he eats well under the 115g recommended by Royal Canin for puppies. We are just persisting with this and resisting the temptation to add things to it. Although we worry that he is not getting his nutritional requirements, I spose we are also worried about creating a fussy eater. We'll see what the vet says when he gets his 12 week shot this weekend. This forum is great to learn that soooo many people have the same concerns and worries about their pup... Good luck with the cocker.
  14. Hi guys, this topic has probably been discussed before but have had a quick squiz and can't find it. With two 35+ degree days in Melbourne and more warm weather to come, I wonder how you guys without air con keep your pups cool during the day? Yesterday I had a portable fan on him in his playpen while I went out for a bit, and when I got home he was under a ceiling fan. I put a face washer in the freezer and then put that in his crate later on in the arvo. He seemed to like that. This is fine whilst on holidays...I go back to work on Tuesday next week and am out from M-F 8-4:30ish. Any strategies on how to get him through the hot days (i'll put a couple of bowls of water, but anything else)? What room temperature is getting a bit too hot for a pup? Any advice or links to other threads much appreciated!
  15. Morning all, I'm a little overwhelmed by the response, I'm used to IT forums. They are not such a nice place to post!!! Shiraz was 8 weeks on Tuesday, that makes him almost 9 weeks, the last 5 days have been a blur! In regards to the chicken, I dice up some maryland and put it in the microwave. It isn't bbq. When my partner and I decided to get a Cav, we spent most of the lead up time thrashing out names! In the end, we both agreed on Shiraz because it is a "nice red". On the first night we had him, we decided to open a bottle to celebrate his arrival...we jokingly wondered if there was a Shiraz 2008 on the wine rack...there was! It was meant to be! I really love the black and tan Cavs also...I met Shiraz's Dad when I picked him up on Wednesday (who is a black and tan) and was gobsmacked at how gorgeous he is. We are so proud that he is doing so well at night also. Cried a fair bit on the second night, but on the 3 other nights has been quiet, sleeping from 11 til 6. He'll be a well informed dog, we have ABC news radio in his playpen running all night and a ticking clock next to his crate. I'd mentally prepared myself for him being a lot worse, so it is a relief that we are sleeping well also. Will definitely post a few pics on the Cav thread, thanks for pointing me to it.
  16. Hi, thanks everybody for the prompt reply. We are first time puppy owners and are a bit nervous! Shiraz was fed about 1/2 hour ago, we put rice back into his meal, diced up some chicken maryland and a little bit of some Royal Canin. He demolished the majority of it. Being off the Royal Canin, I wonder if that is why his poo is a little on the runny side? I'll continue with this diet for the next week or so, slowly trying to increase his kibble content. Do people find their pups will eat different amounts during different meal times?
  17. Hi All. Found this forum whilst my partner and I welcome our new addition to the family, a gorgeous Ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Have found it very interesting and comforting to see that some of my concerns as a new puppy owner are shared by others. I picked him up on Wednesday. He slept like a log for the first night (in a crate in the lounge room). He barely touched lunch or dinner that day. We were a bit concerned but put it down to the nerves/excitement/new environment/missing his mum and litter mates. The problems started the next day. He ate a boatload of his lunch on Thursday (Royal Canin...he was eating it at the breeder). An hour later he threw it up, and about 15 mins later threw up again. I promptly took him to the VET, he was checked out and was ok. The VET recommended rice and steamed chicken diet, anti-nausea tablets and anti-biotics. By lunchtime the next day he was doing ok, ate a big meal of rice, chicken and a bit of Royal Canin mixed in without needing an anti-nausea tablet. I've been trying to increase his Royal Canin content since. He hardly touched his dinner last night, showed a little interest at brekkie and then barely touched his lunch (I diced up some small bits of chicken fillet and he mainly concentrated on that). He still is pretty spry, which I find suprising given the very little he has eaten. Am wondering if you would advise to stick with the Royal Canin or is there something else we could try feeding him? Is he just settling into his new place? Recovering from his tummy bug? I'm just worried about the little man Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.
