  1. Will the seminar be recorded and available to those who cannot attend, either to purchase or free?

Yes, we're planning to use Monash's Echo system which will record both audio and visual of the presentations and they will then be made available online for free.

Check the Animal Welfare Science Centre's website after the seminar for links. http://www.animalwelfare.net.au

When is this anticipated to be on the website? Or is it there and I just can't find it?

A link will be sent out when it is up and running

  2. 4.3 Bicycling on footpaths in Australia

While the majority of traffic laws are the same throughout Australia there are some

  3. IMO there needs to be advertising campaigns giving examples of where to buy a happy, healthy pedigree puppy and maybe a checklist of what to look for when meeting a breeder.

The RSPCA has put out a pamphlet which does just this. I picked it up from the seminar. It was mentioned by at least one of the presenters.

and what a load of misleading garbage that is.

    Hi SBT123

Can you let us know why the pamphlet is a "load of misleading garbage"?

    Thanks

People say this sort of seminar will result in government legislating all sorts of rules and tests that breeders must do for all dogs to meet some 'insert batteries here' type dog. As there are many debilitating and even lethal genetic issues that dogs can carry, and government hasn't legislated about such things, why is it such a certainty in some people's minds that government would legislate about temperament?

Not the seminar, the people and the ideology behind it. And not just temperament, everything.

People say that it is all about training and socialisation - yet I was chatting with a breeder just the other day and a dog she had kept for stud was proving to be somewhat DA. She told me she thought she should not breed from him afterall as she was not happy with his temperament. And this a dog raised in the breeders own home!

It's about genetics and training etc. You do a better job as a trainer with better tools. Remember though, "somewhat DA" might train up well, and be a good pet, but should not be used for stud --- so the breeder is doing the right thing by ditching the dog. The nature vs nurture discussion will be going on for centuries. As a breeder, I want to breed pups with the correct temperament, but it's then up to the owner to make or break them.

Apropos of nothing, I believe that the RSPCA is a sponsor of this seminar.

Why do you think RSPCA is sponsor of the seminar?

  5. Erny that's the thing, your ANKC membership is paying for this PR bloke Peter Higgins to spend his time representing your interests, why isn't he doing just that? It is his job to pursue all available opportunities to represent you that is what he is paid for.

This thread is about a specific seminar at Monash University. Any outside speakers are invited to a seminar, to support the in-house staff position being presented. Dr Peter Higgins, in his capacity as PR vet for a Kennel Club, was obviously not invited.

A whole list of other people who'd have an academic or stakeholder interest in the issues, were also not invited. As is the wont with seminars....which are much, much narrower than conferences.

Have they asked to go on the "seminar invite/notification" list though? Would they not be like me, who did this? Should they wait for a special invitation? Of course, it would be nice (and I would have thought, sensible, for AWA to have specifically contacted these sorts of people - especially if they are after good and balanced input and not potentially just an audience that will be easily persuaded to what they are doing), but that doesn't mean that the people of the ANKC/VicDogs and any other in relevance to their own States shouldn't have known to have made the move to ensure their participation was on the invite list.

    What is AWA?
