A KEARNEYS Spring family who almost lost their prized pomeranian to a dog attack has called for construction workers to take greater responsibility for dogs they take to work.

Jim and Sheryl Gusset’s 11-year-old pomeranian Willy was attacked this month by an unrestrained Staffordshire terrier owned by a sub-contractor working next door.

Willy was left with a deep bite mark on his back that became infected and required surgery.

Sore and bruised, the family’s beloved pet was lucky to have survived.

“It’s still grim because it was such a huge operation,” Mr Gusset said.

“Because (the wound) is so deep, if it gets infected the poor little bugger mightn’t make it.”

The family now faces a $600 veterinarian bill that may escalate with the need for repeat visits.

But Mr Gusset is not concerned by the costs.

He simply wants the contractor to blame to apologise and for others to take more responsibility for dogs brought on to work sites.

“I asked around and found out this is happening quite a lot,” Mr Gusset said.

“Surely that should make builders more responsible when they bring their dogs to work.”

A spokesman from the building company involved told The Chronicle it was a sub-contractor who had brought the dog on to the site.

He said the person responsible had been told the practice was not acceptable.

“There is no place for any animals on a building site,” the spokesman said.

Toowoomba Regional Council is investigating the incident.

  2. PF - the problem is that intruders can get in - they got in through my small one (for mini schnauzers!). I don't care about them getting my stuff, but they came into my house twice and could have hurt the dogs.

The police said that dog doors are a common entry point.

Isn't there some doors that will only open with the dogs collar??(electronic thingy??)

Then they get your dog to get the collar  . The police woman who attended the second robbery advised against them.

It would be easier to brake a window?

  3. I have read on DOL before that dogs can hold on for over 12 hours during the night. Not so much during the day, but due to natural bio-rythms, its easier for them overnight.

My dog can easily hang on overnight (unless she has the squirts from something she has eaten or is on antihistamines). She is too big for a doggie door and I dont intend to lock her outside overnight just so she can wee.

I cant see that the OP's situation is any different?

There are doggie doors big enough for Golden Retrievers - I know a large male squeezed through mine once. :D

Most dogs don't do a full 12 hours overnight. IF you toilet your dog before bed at 10.00 and get up at 7.00, that's only 9 hours.

I sleep less than that & go before I go to bed & when I wake up OT sorry  .....I don't think anyone here would sleep 12 hrs in a row..

  4. I will speak to him. I was going to buy an indoor loo but they didn't wee inside. We go for a morning walk and they toilet then (just before I leave). They don't rush outside to wee when I get home. As I said, if they wanted to wee, they would. There are NO negative consequences for weeing inside. My girl doesn't go outside to wee on her own volition - she will go inside if she needs to wee.

Cruel is a very strong word. I am not a perfect dog owner but my dogs are as far from abused (the word often linked to cruelty) as you can get.

I know - But I personally feel that no dog should have to wait that long..

I know you say they will if they have too, but they shouldn't have too do it inside.

Anyways, I'm not trying to have a go at anyone.

  5. It is interesting to read the comments about 12 hours being too long.

My dogs are indoors during the day (used to have a dog door but got broken into, so now they are inside the house when I'm at work). I am away for about 11 hours each day. Occasionally, it is 12 hours if there has been an accident etc.

They seem to comfortably hold it in - there have been no inside wees since I started doing this. My girl would happily wee inside if she needed to. My boy would hold it in, but would go if absolutely required.

I was once delayed for 12.5 hours, my girl had weed in the dining room (thank goodness for floorboards) and my boy had eventually weed in the bathroom (after trying to scratch at the laundry door to get to the dog door  ).

Obviously it isn't ideal, but they seem to be fine with it and certainly don't rush out when I come home - they go within 10 - 30 mins. They aren't punished for mistakes so would go if they needed to.

Have you asked your vet, what it could do to them, in the long run??

    I think it's cruel. :)

  6. My amstaff has gone through our colourbond fence twice.

He isn't bored.... he just likes to jump to try and see over the fence when ppl/dogs walk past.

Colourbond just isn't very strong at all.

I've got an electric fence now.... a few zap zaps was all he needed to get the message.

Train him not too...Someone that might be afraid of dogs will one day get startled & might report it.

  7. I once put a dble bed mattress in the backyard, intending to take it to the dump. My then dog completly shredded the mattress and it was a huge job picking up all the bits lol. So I would NEVER give a dog a mattess again!

    :eek::wave::love::eek::o

  8. Any of you using a old mattress with an old base as a dog bed & have your dog/s ever chewed them up?

Asking as we have an old bed & thought of letting Baxter use it but hubby think he might chew it up..??

I know we can buy a pet bed but thought we could use that or would it attract fleas? etc??

    Thanks :D

  9. I know most people will be working on photo 5 entries this month, so the challenge is inspired by Canon Photo 5

Don't post the images you're actually entering (unless you want to), however you may want to post shots that haven't worked for whatever reason and maybe talk about why you think they haven't worked and what you would like to improve.

For those who don't have a photo 5 box, you can check out the briefs here

    http://www1.canon.com.au/worldofeos/photo5/briefs/

and for those who want to check out some of the work from last year, there is a little video at this link:

    http://www1.canon.com.au/worldofeos/photo5/home/

(if you pause it at 1.01, you see a flash of our very own BlackLabrador wrapped up in bandages. :vomit: )

Photo 5 is fun even if you don't enter. So get creative and enjoy the month.

Hi, I was checking the photo 5, can the confetti be replaced by flower petals?

    Cheers :offtopic:

  10. Here's my suggestion.

When you find her chewing something that she shouldn't, go get a newspaper, roll it it up and then start whacking yourself on the head until you stop leaving things laying around for her to chew.

I don't normally advocate adversive techniques but this one does work.

    :love::) ;) :):laugh:

  11. I've come home to my 23 month old dachshund going from a happy, confident dog to a timid, tail between her legs, face and fur all ruffled up and not interested in anything, which is weird because shes normally at me for cuddles after work, bouncing around, tail in the air.

My biggest fear is that someone has come in our yard, but id like to know if any other reasons for such drastic behaviour changes? She was fine when I put her out prior to work.

Thanks guys, I'm really worried. If she's no better by Saturday morning it's off to the vet.

Its a possibility, have you got a neighbor near by that could let you know if they have seen something happening?

  12. Oh, I went down to Coles and got 4 collars, 3 leads, a sml kong, some other random chew thing and a wubba. All for $40. Bargain!

I'd never seen the Wubba before. Won't see it again either. It was destroyed within 14min.
