  1. Arty comes home in 2 weeks and I am thinking seriously about getting Pet Plan Insurance, but i am not sure how it works, do I have to pay first and then claim the money back from Pet Plan or will Pet Plan pay the Vet directly in the event that something goes wrong?

Petplan can pay directly to the vet.

It is up to the vet whether they will accept this (as petplan can take a few weeks to pay up) or whether they will require upfront payment.

A few weeks lol..... I wait anywhere between 10-12 weeks ATM!! It kills my credit card as I get charged the interest obviously

Really? The longest it took for ours was 3 weeks and that was with a delay due to a processing error. The second one took 5 days and the 3rd one took 8! All claims over $3500 so they also had to go through a second approval level.

  2. Just wanted to say I got my boys renewal policy in the mail today and rang medibank and confirmed that as an existing policy holder he is still covered for 100% of vet bills( minus 500 excess). However he said that he can't guarantee that will last in following years. The 80% coverage is for new customers or current customers who want to change their policy.

ETA oh and it went up about $4. which better than what Pet Insurance Australia did when I was with them, they almost doubled my premium and I hadn't even claimed anything! Hence why I am not with them anymore.

Ours went up $9, for the 2 dogs per month. So you got the same story as me! At least they are consistent in their info. Glad we were on 100%, with 3 knees requiring TTO surgery for cruciate injuries it was a god send.

  3. I am with medibank private.

$103 per month for my two amstaff's. I have had the insurance since Sept 2010 and have so far been paid out $11,300! We have had TTO surgery on 3 legs so far. I had 100% paid back and only a $100 excess. The last payment was received 2 weeks ago!

My premium went up on renewal by $9 per month across the two dogs.

I will have to investigate the 80% verse 100% pay out as I haven't seen anything indicating the polidy has changed. I am about to claim for their follow up xrays so I will see how I go then.

ETA: Have just checked with medibank pvt and at this stage if you were an existing policy holder you still receive 100% payout, if you take out a new policy since the change you are under th 80% payout cover. This is with medibank,

  4. I didn't think Peter articulated what he was trying to say very well.... I agreed with elements of his stance but didn't agree with the entirity of it.

I thought Brad did well..... as far as the average Joe understanding his stance (that the breed is not the problem) I thought he got across well.

As far as what has been in the media, I would have to say this has been the most beneficial to the cause of dog owners, was it perfect hell no, but it was a far cry from the condemnation that's been previously aired by twat journos that don't have a clue and dribble crap like kill them all.

  5. Hey Ernie,

It's been ages since I have been in... I'm glad to hear you have found something to help Mandela.

Would you believe I actually came in here to tell you about coconut oil... but alas you have already discovered it. A friend of mine was only telling me about it yesterday and the benefits it can have to digestion.

I can't remember now there's so much to this thread, but have you ever tried adding YAKULT to Mandela's dinner?

Boof's biggest issue is wheat, but he also reacts to rice. I just avoid anything of the sort. He doesn't appear to have any protein intolerances thank god, but they don't get much beef, mainly chicken carcasses, roo tail, tinned salmon/tuna/sardines, marrow bones, roo mince, lamb hocks, occasionally a pork hock or beef soup bone and none of those cause us dramas. I add Yakult once a week to their tea and a scoop of yoghurt every other night.

  6. Oh JulesP that just sux.... it's horrible, unfair and just plain crap.... HUGE :grouphug:

It's the suddenness and how young they are that makes it so incomprehendable and just plain unfair.

Know that he will be happy and time will help.... in the meantime, you have all our support and be sure to know I understand exactly what you are going through xoxox

  7. Snooza Active walker is the one I use, and I have a D hook that sits basically on each hip. I walk Boof n Lilly with this no worries and I can have a check chain on them with the lead to control that in my hands and them attached to me with their harnesses if we are doing something they arent good at yet (like walking past boxers that have a fence almost along the foot path that go nuts at us) :) I love it! Or if I am going for a run my arms are free to run properly!
  8. The last show I watched was months ago on puppy training - when you bring your pup home put it in the bathroom or laundry at night and let it cry  . No mention of crates at all - most vets love crate-trained dogs I thought  . Most of his training advice is at least 20 years old :scold:

I've worked with many vets over the years, and not one has known what crate training was. Even once explined to them I've heard vets advise clients against it. :(

Oh that's such a shame :( . My sister was telling me she took her new puppy to the vet last week and she proudly told him she was using a crate. He was thrilled - he told her that when a crate trained dog was hospitalised they usually settled quicker than the non-crate trained dogs. And to emphasise the fact he had a dog making a huge racket out the back - probably not crate trained ;)

My vet is a HUGE fan of crate training, makes many situations much easier to handle. Surgery recoveries, resting for repair without surgery etc.....

  9. RPT

Sorry I don't know what this means?

    rpt = repeat

so now we get round 2 of bad public education, not keen on that show at all, never mention desexing these dogs with pup s all the time, but will test a pup for pit , what if it still ends up biting  because the owners don;t train it right

    Oh got it...

    I couldn't agree more

  10. I have seen a grand total of maybe 10 minutes of the show and it's already irritating me.....

    Case 1:

Small dog attacked by 'pitbull' (well who identified it really) and they are 'not all bad I'm sure the ones at home are wonderful' s their termperament is a product of how they are brought up, but due to the 'lock' of their jaw they can't be removed, so damage is normally bad..... ggggrrrr!

    Case 2:

Small white dog up for adoption, lady adopting it doesn't particularly want it if it has any 'pitbull' in it so Dr Chris is doing a definitive $120 DNA test to ascertain whether it has any 'pitbull' in it. This is after in case 1 they noted that 'temperament' is a product of upbringing.

How is this crap allowed on TV? No wonder the general public have no idea.

  11. Yep less food.

My little girl has to drop 4kg due to cruciate issues. She was 26.34kg last Tuesday and she needs to get down to 22kg. As of yesterday morning she was down to 25.84kg so progress.

I have simply reduced the size of her roo tail or chicken carcass for breakfast and stopped using lamb flaps/pork hocks as they are too fatty and at dinner time, reduced the amount of meat she gets, she still gets her joint supplement, flaxseed and yoghurt.

At this stage she isnt whimpering around or scavenging for more. I am also reducing Boof's intake (the boy) he is 33kg roughly and could be down to 30kg ideally (he's a lil more porky than lil but neither are actually 'overweight' according to the vet).

If I get to the point where she is 'looking' for more food I will add vegies to make her feel fuller (they make her poos huge though, LOL, so clearly they don't get absorbed very well)

ETA: at the moment they are getting NO treats at all, so no Pigs ears, pig snouts, buffalo pizzle etc!

  12. Ok so regular vet concurs that it is two ruptured cruciates and has recommended a specialist surgeon that comes through our area twice a year (we don't have a permanent one here) but also operates out of JCU in townsville.

We are waiting on the referral as it will be up to the specialist whether they do both at once of separate surgeries.

On the hunt for a crate, the vet is looking at what they can get vs what I can get.

In the meantime they have asked we limit the pain relief and only keep up the anti imflamatory, this will help keep her still but reduce the inflamation before surgery.

We will be putting her on Aloe Vera juice, Udo's choice and continuing the Joint Guard to help stave off the onset of Arthritis! The Aloe Vera Juice and udo's choice will start after surgery!
