  1. ninaandted - you are doing a great job :( I have a pretty nervous dog and have to work really hard all the time with him! One week he is fine with the vacuum, the next he thinks it is going to kill him... :mad two steps forward, one step back.

-My husband is having trouble following the "rules" too.. Instead of ignoring Patches when he gets nervous he will try to "comfort" him.. (pats, and stuff)... Ugh! I have to keep reminding him that he's actually rewarding the dogs nervous behavior.. We are getting there though..

Hang on for a bumpy ride!

  2. I've been in dozens of these conversations and they almost always go the same way.

    1. People with next to no experience with the tool hate them.

    2. Those people say that the tool is cruel.

    3. They base their opinions on emotions rather than logic and reason.

    4. They often approach hysteria in their quest to "badmouth" the tool.

    5. They won't listen to facts.

    6. They have some idea about how the tool is used, and it's usually one they've heard, rather than seen.

    7. They may have seen an Ecollar used but it was an older model, not the modern tools available today.

    8. They use the phrase "zapped into submission."

    9. They talk about pain.

    10. They talk of their experience with dog training which is usually very limited, often only to a couple of their own pets.

    11. They continue in their beliefs no matter what information is presented to them.

Now on the upside. People with open minds learn something about the tool. Many new users are converted or at least inquire as to their proper use.

    Lou Castle,

The reasons you describe as to why people don't like the collars are so true! But I think those reasons could be described to so many more scenarios. BSL for one.

  3. This is what my trainer taught me..

when my dog barks I say Speak! , then I tell him good speak!

-When he barks and I want him to be quiet, I say quiet twice if he doesn't stop I spray Binaca into his mouth.

--it is not harmful and something people use in their mouth for bad breath anyway. !!

I have done this three times and Patches is already getting that Speak means he can bark and Quiet means no bark.

  4. hard to explain: I have heard people say, My dog is being stubborn. Or my dog is being spiteful because he peed on the floor. chewed up his toy etc.

-In my opinion a dog cannot be "spiteful" he is simply a dog. If he's doing something wrong it is because you have not trained him to do it right.. not because he is evil, or spiteful.

-maybe others think differently. but I think sometimes people need to think like a dog, not assume their dogs are "thinking" like a human.

*not sure if any of this makes sense.
