    Gorgeous pups Parkeyre! Love their names Iam going for sun/star/moon names myself I think at this point also but mine have to go with Seeker.

    Thanks. I cried, and then Alice cried, and then I balled my eyes out. :( No sleep = super emotional.

    Does everyone else get so upset over a newborn baby? :(

    Ow I am so very sorry Parkeyre. I was exactly the same Tuesday morning. I had 11 healthy babies and because I had to put that one angel to sleep, I just bawled all the way home from the vets. Felt horrible for days. I found I was missing out on enjoying the beautiful 11 babies we have. I know Voodoo felt what I was feeling, She kept going to get a toy teddy to make up for the one she somehow knew she lost. Bloody dogs are so instinctual! She knew she was supposed to have 12 in that box!!! I think its a good thing that we feel sad over a loss. It means we are doing this breeding thing for the right reasons because we care so much!!! Although I must admit, I was thinking while driving home, I dont think I can do this ever again. Have changed my mind since then. :hitself:

    Good mornin heidii!

    Alice is sleeping now, puppies are all suckling and squeaking away. Been to the vet this morning for a good look over and for an oxytocin shot. No more babies, Alice is relieved. ;)

    The breakdown of surviving puppies is:

    3 dogs (all black tri, one tailed, two very short NBTs)

    5 bitches (4 blue Merle, 1 black tri, all very short NBTs).

    Dead puppies were:

    2 dogs (1 blue Merle NBT, one black tri tailed)

    2 bitches (1 black tri NBT, one blue Merle NBT)

    Well done! Congrats!!! RIP little angels. :cry:

    Three Questions About Canine Pregnancies And Whelping

    I'm a first time breeder of Australian Shepherds; and my dear maiden girl Alice is currently on day 58 of her pregnancy.

    She is having a rather large litter for her breed, though it's not uncommon for her lines.

    I'm wondering if she will go earlier then day 63 because of her size and the number of puppies on her Xray.

    The first question is for everyone who's ever bred a bitch, but the last two are for those who had litters via Artifical Insemination.

    I've made the questions multiple choice, incase breeders have had mixed experiences.

    Please feel free to comment further on your answers. The questions are:

    Q1 - How far into your bitch's gestation did she whelp?

    Q2 - If an AI litter; did your bitch whelp her whole litter naturally or did she require a Caesarean section?

    Q3 - If an AI litter; was it a normal size litter for your breed?

    Well my girl (first litter also & has a very large litter on board) is at day 60 I am hoping for a natural whelping. Fingers are all crossed. The vet (Monash in Melbourne) thinks she will go tomorrow, Monday. I guess we will see.
