  1. Good heavens, if a breeder can do it all right and still make money over an extended period of time then all power to them. Since when is it a case of remain poverty stricken = an ethical breeder?

People cross breed because they can, there is a demand and just as anyone choosing to breed purebred dogs has the right in this country to do so because a minority of people - us - prefer purebred dogs thats not going to stop them.

Purebred breeders breed less than 10% of puppies bred in this country each year and it doesnt matter what side of the fence you sit on you can make an argument to justify what you do.

What you breed or why you breed it or even if you make truck loads of money isnt counted. What is counted is the things a person is prepared not

to compromise on to ensure that every puppy has the chance of the best life with the best family.

I breed Maremmas and most of my dogs work - without them my stud Dorper sheep some of which are worth tens of thousands of dollars would be plagued by foxes and crows. My lambs would be lucky to survive their first week of life. Put simply I cant live without them. During lambing season I get calls from farmers who offer me thousands of dollars for my dogs some of which wouldbe happy to only take them for a few months and then return them.the difference for me is that the year before I got the Maremmas we lost 200 lambs since the Maremmas Ive lost none. How much is a working Maremma worth ? If I have one which a farmer is prepared to pay $5000 for which takes it away from where its working for me should I say no and put a lesser price on it so I remain ethical?

A working Kelpie - papered or not that is good at what it does easily replaces 2 men when it comes to handling mobs of sheep. $6000 is cheap.

    Well Said

  2. Being a 30 something empty nester that lived in inner-west (Camperdown) (Now opted for a tree change) I have to give the Shiba Inus a plug

They are one of the easiest dogs I have owned for inner city living (and one of tghe hardest for rural lol).

  3. oh we got our ewe back from the farm next door, they shaved her for us, and a while later she had twins!!

looked out my window to see these two little babies! my first lambs - they are pets - they come on the porch and still follow mum around even though they are the same size as her! ...they try to drink of her too ha!

When I went back through the dates of gestation I too discovered that they had been off to get shorn that particular weekend. The buggers were only off the property for a wee bit, no time wasting occurred to getting down to business on either side I suspect

  4. Oh my god you must be in shock! :(

Lucky she is in good hands. Look forward to seeing more pics.

    Shock is an understatement!!

Haha that happened to me with Ewe's I had owned for over 2 years...... and I DONT own a ram  40+ degrees day and I heard the bleating and thought "What the".............

  5. Hi Magaretka,

    Welcome to DOL.

There are a number of Shiba owners/ Breeders on this forum, not sure of their whereabouts though :-). I own 2 males and my Ma has one male, being in a small town they get ALOT of attention when we take them out.

    Cheers

    Catz

  6. Nadz - you and me both, I keep listening listening listening for little noises. Humphrey is getting so much better. Although yesterday he did have an accident in his crate (number 2's!!!) but I think it happened so fast he didn't have time to alert me as it was very (sorry for the description) runny and yucky. Poor little poppet

When we go out for 'loo' he just comes straight back in now and settles, getting much much better everyday. It's hard work though :)

Well done!! Dont worry about the oopsie pups will be pups and their tummy well get the best of them one time or another. I have had only the one accident to date under the same circumstances :D .

  7. After years of trying to figure out who was right and who was wrong whilst figuring out what to feed my dogs I decided to let the dogs tell the story  . If you need to add weight and their coats are shiny, stools are normal and non smelly etc then just add rice, pasta or throw a chicken wing or two as a treat.

If you feel that your diet isnt working at all, do your research (like you are doing) but be prepared to take a little bit of this and a little bit of that from each person as after all, all of it is merely someones opinion  and what worked for them may not necessarily work for you :)

Puppys have small tummys so whilst they are growing they need small feeds often, I have a 16 week pup here that has just gone from 3 feeds to 2 a day and she seems to be coping with that, My 2 adult dogs get feed once a day with some sort of treat in the evening.

  8. catzatsea, where are you, I'm seriously going to steal your dogs.........

hehe I can tell you get me on the right day and you are welcome to them :( Seriously we used to be in Sydney and now out SW NSW on acerage  .

I should pull the papers out as the boy hiding the bone is titled and I think Glendalin breeding :)

My Mum also has a Shiba and he definitely is a character and a half as well :) .

Someone asked about cats, I have two and dont have a problem at all but the Shibas do have rules in place and demand that they are are followed and respected :( , I nickname the younger fella the Manners Police ;) My cats are definitely more dog like then the Shibas

  9. Just would love to hear your thoughts on Large Breed puppy food versus Adult Dry (mainly Eagle pack)

If Large Breed Puppy Crude Protein Not less than 23.00% Crude Fat Not less than 12.00% and Adult dry is Crude Protein Not less than 22.00% Crude Fat Not less than 12.00% is it really important to stick with the Large Breed puppy? (I have put a full table for comparison below)

Reason for asking is that I live out regional NSW where dog food is done via mail order and large breed puppy is currently unavailable with my supplier, I feed my other dogs the Adult Eagle pack (salmon and anchovy) and was thinking I could feed pup that until supplies came back in. If not I will source out another supplier..........

  10. You can use Apple Cider Vinegar to treat Fleas in many different ways.

Not only can you add it to their water but you can spray bedding daily as well as the animal itself. Very effective longterm natural method if you are consistant .

  11. I voted Eagle Pack, but Gomez gets Eagle Pack Holistic - there is a difference, the holistic range has even better ingredients and does not use corn at all....

I did as well and Totally agree, My Boys didnt too well off Eagle Pack but thrive off Eagle Pack Holistic. Saying that I had a dog on Eagle Pack Adult Fat Reduced and she did fantastic!!

O and have tried over 50% on the list. :offtopic:

  12. Russell Lea is right near Drummoyne, it's the next suburb. Just turn off Victoria Road in Lyons Road and keep going and the vet is on the righthandside.

There is a physio in Leichardt that I've had recommended as well if you want that info but I'd try a vet first.

Is that the physio with the hydro therapy???

I will put in a second reccomendation for the vet at Russel Lea, My boys love going there, fall asleep whilst having acupuncture and dont mind the chiropractic work. No mean feat for Spud and he has an internal hatred for vets.

The only problem I have now is when we head to our other vet they run to the receptionist expecting her to drop everything to dote on them :( .

  13. I have read Jan Fennel / Ceasar Millan and didn't like any of those books. :p

From what I've heard - they won't get much credibility from me either.

Has anyone ever heard of "control unleashed" It has come highly recommended to me and would love to hear more

Have just ordered a copy last week.

    Will let you know !

I ordered mine yesterday and very much looking forward to it. I wouldn't class Cesar Milan's book as a "training" book as such to me it is more aimed at techniques to use for relationship building within the pet home :) .

  14. A sheltie that I walk twice weekly has now been clipped and boy didn't I feel embarassed for her  not only did she look naked - It didnt do much for her current apperance  Saying that she handled her walk well and definately was more socialable and playful - however I will very be interested on how her coat grows back ......
