  1. Hi Michelle, we have a FB page which is only in it's infancy. The link is here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/dogsport/ but if you pm me with your email address I will send you a few example pages from the folders we had at the National. I have a list of dogs too for the project but not sure if Helen's email address is working or not. I do however have the lists of titled Vic Brittanys (or is that Brittanies?!) on my desk here. Might be able to help with pedigrees for Vic whelped dogs too.

Great stuff, I really appreciate it :)

    Pming you now

  2. LOL! The folders took two months the actual research....you don't want to know. I spent countless hours in the KCC library going through gazettes back to the 50's to obtain the records. My partner in crime did a fabulous job on the folders, and the display which she did herself as she couldn't get around for quite awhile. Muggins here is just the researcher! Of course we have a secret weapon, and that is that a lot of the obedience judges were collie people to start with which does rather help. The display at the National really helped to get more information coming our way as has the FB page. If you want the link for that let me know. :)

I'm totally chuffed that someone else has been inspired to have a go with their own breed. That's just wonderful.

If you want to cut down some of your work try emailing Dogs NSW and asking about a data extract....I wish we'd found out about that sooner!

    Hi Natsu chan,

Have you guys set up a web page for your database? Ive volunteered to help Helen out and I want to check your stuff out to help me get my head around it all.Any info would be great :)

    cheers Michelle

  3. OP here. Thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it. And just to clarify - I would never dump an animal at a pound. The dog in question is still very much looked after, fed, walked, comes inside and all the things you do with a dog. Its just that as Sandra777 said, there are some dogs that you don't/wouldn't miss and I sadly think the one of my current dogs is in that category. Am considering the possibility that maybe we've never really bonded? Which is something I hadn't really considered.

Let me see if I can tell this in a sensible fashion. So Dog A is a sighthound and comes with sighthound limitations. He did kill one of my cats a number of years ago - didn't really hold that against him back then, he has a strong prey drive - so we've kept dogs and cats separate for years now, it's pain in the bum but you do what you have to. He's stubborn and barks til he gets what he wants. I never did quite figure out how to manage that aspect of his behaviour - growling at him never had any effect. He's a funny bugger - its' like I can't make him happy? We go to the beach, he's cold (even with a coat on), can't run with the other dogs and generally looks miserable. But I leave him at home and he carries on like a beast. I can't win - and that makes me feel like crap.

Dog B comes into the picture - she is quite frankly the most perfect, wonderful, amazing dog I've ever had. Recalls like a dream, super temperament and people love her. Consequently we're able to do things like go to the beach, let her off lead and do normal dog things that people do with their dogs. We take them camping, she just cruises around camp, comes back when you ask her to and we keep dog A tethered or on lead (which again he looks miserable about).

Part of the problem is that the amazingness of dog B is really showing us the limitations of Dog A - which I guess is why I feel so incredibly crap about my lack of feeling towards dog A. Dog B could be easily trained out of cat issues, then I can reintegrate cats and dogs and relieve the stress of running 2 separate sets of animals (and I also have a nearly 4 year old son, so yes that too).

But its not the dog's fault - he basically is what he's always been, its other stuff that has changed and I just feel so horrid about it all. I hate that I think, hmmm one day when you die, life will be quite different and easier for me. It's just so wrong and I feel like absolute crap when I love dogs and don't view them as a disposable commodity and yet I have such ambivalance towards one of my own. I don't know whether I've failed him or myself or both. So yeah - you can now condemn me if you choose, but realistically you can't call me anything I haven't called myself.

    Thanks for reading.

Virtual hugs Cougar, my heart goes out to you :(

  4. I have unbonded with a dog :(

We had a working kelpie when I was younger, he was my late fathers dog and he was a great dog, very affectionate and loving, he also provided us with a connection to Dad after he died. One day he just brain snapped for no apparent reason and went to attack my god child from across the room, i remember josh hadnt been anywhere near him at the time, Devil just had a quiet low growl and flew off his bed towards josh who was about 4 years old,I reacted instinctively and managed to intercept him before he reached young josh, I caught his collar, he bit through my hand and kept trying to attack me while I dragged him to his kennel.I have a couple of scars on my arm and hand where he got me, it was pretty full on. we took him to the vet who couldn't find anything wrong after a barrage of tests, mum said she would have him pts if I wanted but I couldn't bring myself to have him put down. We had only lost Dad a year earlier.

To this day I have no clue why he did it, but I never felt the same about that dog again.Devil also avoided me afterwards & probably picked up on my distrust of him. I never let my kids near him when we visited my mum even though she said he ever again showed any aggression & she kept him until he died of old age quite a few years later.

  5. Water quality also makes a difference,I find the Perth water very harsh compared to Melb,NSW & Adelaide & that can affect the outcome of a product.

The Kelco i have used & found it very gentle on the coats but then i don't use dog products that often

I hadn't thought of the water affecting the products, thanks that's good to know!

  6. Who knew that a simple question of black and white shampoos would turn into such a long (and to me interesting!) thread!!

I now have a list of shampoos I want to try

I love trying new products but my wallet doesnt quite so much

I want to give the pangenics a go, also Champion Tails, Kelco, and the Petways ones,I wonder if they do trial sizes?

I bought some bryll cream a few weeks ago to use on his pee feathers on a whim,Im glad I was on the right track :)

  7. Isle of Dogs & Plush puppy i have never found any good.

Both made the coats dry .

For whites i just wash the legs in green dishwashing detergent if bad or velvet soap.

Dazzle dog is great & add some white vinegar & works a treat .

Most enhancing ones i find leave it dry & you need to clarify more often.

Animal house whitening is fairly harsh too & i only used it on the legs if they where truly bad but i prefer to just maintain the coats & not have to go crazy with added stuff.

I did find the Isle of Dogs drying on my own hands, which is probably whats affected Obi too.

I used the purina puppy shampoo but it didnt get any dirt off and made him coat feel quite rough. His white areas have started to come up a bit yellow so maybe I need to use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any build up that could be there from the IODs that I have been using?

Then just be able to maintain with a gentle shampoo instead of using the whitening shampoo which is obviously drying him and causing the itchy n scratchy?

would the velvet soap or detergent dry the coat out a fair bit as well though? I wonder if the IOD conditioner is contributing to the yellowing, his coat feels so nice and soft afterward I use it so I hope not!

It was so much simpler before I got a show dog,a hose off in the backyard and the occasional hydrobath was the extent of my grooming then lol.

  8. I have been using isle of dogs no 16 whitening shampoo & their heavy conditioner on my orange & white Brittany. It has been really good but lately he seems to have developed a bit of a sensitivity to the shampoo, he gets quite itchy the minute I put it on him, it also doesn't seem to be as effective as it used to be, his coat is a tiny bit yellowed, I do love their heavy conditioner though.

So now I'm looking for a good shampoo that will whiten his white bit while still protecting the orange and that he hopefully won't react to?.

I will be watching with interest :)

  9. Hello I've recently started showing and I am having trouble with sore feet, can anyone help with where I can buy comfortable walking type shoes able to have orthodics if needed in them in Queensland if at all possible or Australia at least?

Have you tryed sketchers? I wear orthotics too, and I can get my orthotics into them. There are also some good plain black lady jane type shoes at Athletes Foot I noticed the other day. There are heaps of shoes around, it just depends on what you are looking for.

  10. here is a pic i took of the bench our fist year at the royal with a rotti. the bench was quite a decent size i sat on it with her. i brought a large pet bed that is on it and it still had space in fornt and to the sides.

That is quite a lot of room, great, thx for sharing that pic.

I hadnt thought of 'dressing' my bench, maybe next year if I survive this year :D

  11. Nariko just so you know, when you get there (before gates open at 9am) there is no GP there, and i'm sure that whoever you are benched next to would be happy to watch your things, if needed :)

I also always take a crate but generally just leave them tethered to the benches. I do like having the option of giving them space in a crate though, especially the youngsters.

I do take a chair but end up barely sitting on it (although might be slightly different this year!) and I usually do sit on the benches with the dogs. it's goign to be odd this year having just one.

Thx ST, Ive bought a soft crate for Obi, so will be much lighter & easier to bring in :) I wont bring all of the crap I usually chuck in though.

I have bought 2 kids tickets just to make life easier if they want to 'help' me set up, if not, it was cheaper to do it that way than any other.Ron is going to make the day Im entered the show day for the boys so they wont be hanging around the dogs area much I am sure. He will probably take them home and just come back for me later.

  12. I cannot get my head around what are these judges thinking?

you can get a similar sentance for contempt of court?

how is killing a man and giving both him a none commutable sentance of death and his family a life sentance of mourning, no chance of getting their loved one back the sentance for them is life.

no I cannot in any way understand how that judge could hand out such a joke and call it anything less.

what message is that judge thinking she has handed to the killer or any other moran like him?

I think we all feel the message from that judge is she does not value the innocent life lost a fraction of the people who knew and loved him or even the millions who never will but still recoil in horror at this insult of a sentance that is mascerading as 'justice'.

I dont know anyone who isnt shaking their head and wondering what is so obviously wrong with those we are taught to trust to bring justice and very hansomly paid for that 'service'?,

Suspect, if there were a vote asked yes or no do you think our justice system is fair, let alone the sentance fit the crime. It will get a resounding NO vote from all but the crims.

    Very well said!

The whole thing has made me feel physically sick, I am shocked at the sentencing time ??? Its crazy

  13. thanks Showdog for all the info!

I did get an email back this afternoon, I have to buy them passes at $26 ea if they are to come in wih me!!! Thats disgraceful, I cant even get my husband to 'drive thru' and leave til 9am, then go in through the main gate with them which would be cheaper as he would only have to pay for himself.

So Im thinking now that I will drive in with my 12yr old (he can use the 2nd pass) he can stay with the dog and our stuff while I go and park the car, Im not comfortable leaving anything unattended at all, so its either that or park and walk in with everything.

So rude of the show ppl...rant over...

My hubby can then bring our younger son in at 9am when the gates open.

  14. I agree with the others about your current dog probably teaching any new dog about chase and kill.

Coming from a farm growing up, it is usual practise to let the younger pups follow on behind the older dogs and learn from them about life on the land.

Even if you get a lower drive dog it will still instinctively form a pack with your older dog and add to the potential damage.

Id work on Ruby first and then add another dog once you have her a bit more 'chilled out'

But if I had to choose, Id say a Brittany, but I am biased :)
