  1. Can anyone tell if something would/could be wrong with it? Had dogs all my life but this is the first one i'd be buying myself so want to be sure i get a good one. The breeder seems very nice but there can be some dodgy people that act nice out there. Thank you.

    Gorgeous puppy ! :)

Looks as though that pic was taken when it was younger than 8 weeks so eyes should be brown by now :)

    How did you go ?

  2. Thanks for all the feedback. I gather that Advance is quite good, so once I'm finished with Optimum I'll switch to that :birthday:

I had my Boxer on Optimum Puppy dry food til he was 18 months. Now he and my Bullmastiff x Ridgeback are on Great Barko.

My French Bulldog was on Royal Canin medum breed Puppy and now on Royal Canin Medium breed Adult and he LOVES it.

I've got him on Pro Plan selects at the moment but they stopped making it :)

Ahhh so thats why its been super discounted and my local pet produce place !

  3. Advance rehydratable is a good starter when weaning - so is the Royal Canin product if you can get it (not easy to obtain). Stay on the Advance Puppy until around 12 weeks and then move to Royal Canin Medium adult. We've had great results.

Oakwood sponsor a lot of dog clubs. They have a website www.oakwoodproducts.com Australian made which is a bonus. First started using it about 5 or 6 years ago after winning it at Sydney Royal. They've just launched a new oatmeal and aloe vera shampoo which would be worth trying.

I went to Petbarn in Alexandria on Saturday and they had both the Advance and the Royal Canin Rehydratable.

They also had the Oakwood Shampoos and conditioners. I bought the Oatmeal and Aloe vera one for $12.68. It was great and cleansed well and made Pierre's coat very soft. There wasn't as much fragrance or shine though but i'd say that is becasue its more for sensitive skin so focuses more or skin than coat.

Affirmation - If you can't find it let me know coz i'm happy to grab one for you.

  4. Nush - Dont just apply for ones that mention pets, just cause they dont mention them doesnt mean they dont accept them

True. If you find a place... there is no harm in calling them up and asking if it's pet friendly. Some will say no straight away, and some will ask about the pets and stuff. then ask the real estate people if they know any pet friendly rentals around there. good luck Nush!!

Exactly... I'm about to put my house on the rental market and I don't plan on advertising it as pet friendly. However if the right tenant comes along who happens to have a dog I would probably say yes provided they have pet references.

    Where about Macka?

North Rocks. Will be available from 20th Feb. I may post a link next week when the ad is up.

Hi. I'd be interested if you could send me the link ;)

  5. I have a couple more questions

Because of their short face, do they need a special food bowl?

I heard a slanting bowl is best.

When walking, what do you use....collar, harness, etc?

Is it ok to clean the wrinkles/folds with baby wipes....those hypoallergenic ones?

What food do you recommend for these dogs?

Do they put on weight easily?

Are they a food oriented dog?

When bathing what do you use?

I asked the weight question as I have seen a lot of Frenchies on you tube that are overweight and it doesn't look very comfortable for them being that size, and obviously not good for their health.

    Lynn

Pierre has a standard dog bowl.

He walks with a harness unless i'm practising walking him in the ring which he then wears a thin check chain.

Baby wipes are fine to clean in wrinkle folds and on white parts of the face u can put vaseline on to prevent staining.

Pierre eats 1/4 raw meat mixed with 3/4 Royal Canin dry food.

Yes he has a good appetite so he seems to oput on weight easily.

Pierre loves his food and is easy to train with treats

I wash him in Aloveen Oatmeal Shampoo

  6. What are the main physical differences between German, English, Dutch and American type boxers?

Also do the different type boxers have different type personalities ( more confidence in some, faster to mature in others etc) not taking into account the individual natures of dogs but as a group.

I have found European lines to be generally "taller" than the American lines

  7. Hi,

I have been in love with the French Bulldog Breed for several years now. And I hope in the future to one day be the proud owner of one

In the last 2 years I had to put my 8yr old Aussie Bulldog to sleep due to bowel cancer. I also this year had to do the same thing with my 11 month old Aussie Bulldog pup for cancer too.

If I decide to get another dog I want a slightly smaller dog of the bulldog persuasion. The Frenchies are perfect, smaller, just as stubborn most of the time, energetic one minute lap dog the next.

I have done quite a lot of research in the this breed, reading everything I can get my hands on, so I feel I would be prepared for nearly everything.

But I do have a question:

It has been said Frenchies love a companion. I could only ever get one dog, but would it be enough just having human companionship?

My hubby is retired, I am home all the time, I have a 20yr old daughter and 13yr old daughter as well. I have grandchildren, but they rarely visit. So the only ones home all the time are us, plus our 4 yr old cat who loved playing chasey with our last pup.

    Thanks

If they have human company and a romp with some doggy friends every now and then they will be fine. It's important to socialise them with other dogs, but I wouldn't say they have to live with another dog.

    I agree with Sparky.

  8. Can anyone explain to me what a natural bobtail is. I know the boxer used to have a docked tail and assume that only dogs with tails can be shown now.

Bobtails can also be shown

Here is a link from the Boxberry website on info about bobtail Boxers:

  9. Hello everyone,

Does anyone want a free opened bag of Great Barko, if so read on......

After reading the various posts about Great Barko, I thought I would give it a try. Unfortunately, after a gradual introduction over the past two weeks or so I have decided to stop feeding her this brand. She was eating it (she is a golden retriever with a healthy appetite!) but it just didn't agree with her, so I have approx 80% left in the bag - give or take and instead of throwing it away I would like to offer it for FREE to someone on here.

The only catch is you just need to pick it up over the next week - I live in Melbourne about 15kms south of the city. I guess all dogs react differently to different brands of food and its just unfortunate that for me it didn't work out

Being new to this forum I gather you just p'm me for my details and to arrange a pick up time (best times for me at this stage is late afternoons/evenings, however other times can be arranged if required).

    Thanks

You could put a [post in the rescue forum to see if any rescue groups in your area might like to take it off your hands..

  10. Is the only difference between Grea Barko and Uncle Albers the meat type ?

I see Great Barko is Breef & Lamb and Uncle Albers is Beef and Chicken. I prefer Lamb over Chicken for my Boxer so i went with Great Barko.

Uncle Albers has a slightly higher protein content 24% as against 22%.

o.k thanks. I'll see how I go with Great Barko.

  11. My lot ate Great Barko, but only because they had to. Since I changed to Uncle Albers they have been back eating with gusto.

  12. Hi all,

I have started my 17 week old pup on Advocate for Localised Demodex and was wanting to know of any remedies for the hair regrowth please.Apparently this is the longest pert of recovery as the hair folicals die and it takes a while for the hair regrowth. Thanks to all.

My boy's hair grew back quite quickly (within 2 weeks you could see a big difference. I guess it depends on how affected he already is.

I washed my boy in Pyohex once a week and "Aloveen Oatmeal Conditioner" as a soothing agent on his skin afterwards and I think these helped alot.

  13. My female 2.5 year old brindle boxer has developed a hair loss condition recently and has been progressively getting worse. I first noticed a month or 2 ago that the hair on the top of her back towards her middle to tail area was thinning but not patchy. But left her at a friends palce over the weekend while we went away and returned to find it had got alot worse quickly and has developed into alot of patches of total hair loss now.

She seems ok physicaly, a bit tired it seems after a weekend of playing with my friends dog, but is eating well and all else seems normal to me. We are just comming out of winter here in canberra, not sure if that is related, it had warmed up a little last week but got quite cold again on the weekend. I would expect a little hair loss with season changes but not like this. I havent experienced this with other boxers i have owned although i have never owned a brindle before.

    Anyone experienced something similar?

I would take her to the vet asap for a skin scrape. It could be Demodectic Mange .... not that likely due to her age but it is still a possibilty. Boxers are more prone to having sensitive skin so it could be an allergy to certain foods or something in the environment but i would get a skin scrape 1st and go from there. Good luck !

  14. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am only new here so I hope its ok.

I recently purchased a pup from a breeder and 4 days after I got him home he showed symptoms of diarrhoea. He had been off his food for 1 day only but I put it down to all the running around he did and the fact it was 32'C. He was still drinking plenty of water and seemed alert and happy as well as slobbery!! That night the breeder sent me an email mentioning that 3 other pups in the litter also had tummy upsets so I called my vet who asked me to bring pup straight in which I did. Pup never came home. He was diagnoes with Parvovirus from a rectal swab and then spent the next 4 days valiantly hanging on. We tried everything possible to get him better but we just couldnt and he died. I was devastated.

My question now is how do I disinfect (for want of a better word) my yard so that when I get a new pup the same thing doesnt happen? I have already bleached the inside of my house and the pavement areas outside (I have thrown out the dog bed, bowls toys and kennels as these things can be replaced) but what about the grass? Does anyone have any ideas?? I am more than happy to bleach the grass if this will work - I dont care if the lawn dies.

If anyone has any information it would be much appreciated.

Sorry to hear this happened to you!

I wouldnt be taking any pups into your house/yard for atleast 3 - 4 months (the longer the wait the better) and if you do get another in the next 12 months I would suggest to get one atleast 12 weeks of age or over so they have atleast had 2 vaccinations.

  15. Nala you can also pick up Uncle Albers from World for Pets on Windsor road as you head out to Hawkesbury pound. They keep plenty on hand as Pixie and I are always in there (with 8 dogs between us to feed) and beg them not to stop keeping it.

    O.k great thanks

  16. I was told you can't titer test for kennel cough and it still has to be done yearly. As I've seen no results here for it I assume this is right?

Yep no titer test - up to you if you want to vaccinate for it yearly

I was under the impression, and both my dogs have confirmed it to be true, that once you dog has contracted KC it ias higly unlikey for them to ever get it again (aside from when they are ill and/or elderly) so what would be the reaosn to get them vaccined against it more than once ?
