  1. Might be easier to call into a local vet when you're out and about and weigh him - they mostly have the scales in the waiting room and I've never had one refuse a polite request to use them.... that wiggly 43 .. 44 ..45 ...50 kg puppy will do your back in eventually :-)

I deadlift 200kg so he's actually fairly light. Plus because I've done it so often he knows he gets treats at the end so he doesn't move at all.

I'm going to get him checked out this week just to be sure.

  2. So I've not weight him for a whole week. Im a fairly big bloke so picking him up has always been easy but I definitely just felt a difference. I take my weight, then hold him and minus mine. He's 43kg today... Either my scales don't work or he's gained 3kg in a week. We've not fed him more, he's actually eaten less as he seems to have lost his appetite lately.

Needless to say I'm happy his weights beginning to move again.

I'm going to keep this thread going weekly. I may look back in a few months time and cringe at myself for being so worried, or I may not.

I've appreciated all the info I've gotten and Thankyou for beating with me.

  3. Okay so I've found the email and have contacted her.

My friend has a 10 months old akita from a breeder in Tasmania and he's 45kg. That seems reachable in that amount of time it's just that he's weighs not moved for so long that's got me worried.

  4. has he had anaesthetic? noticed the shaved patch ....

He had a very bad case of grass seeds. Some were really bad that needed to be shaved. Was very sad for him but it's alright now.

All I have is her mobile number. I can't seem to find the website anymore.

  5. Your boy is handsome, I love his little 'lightning bolt' on his forehead.

Your boy looks great, very loved and a good size from the photos. He might become heavier or maybe he won't. Maybe the sire was 52 kgs as he was big boned?

We had another Akita, 4 years old and he was 40 kgs and narrower in build.

Try not to get too focused on the weight side of things, unless it will really bother you long term. He really is a handsome boy. Have you spoken to your breeder?

The breeder isn't returning my messages.

  6. Please read this.

    -I love my dog

Some of these posts have been very helpful, others aggravating.

My dogs lines are good. His father was 24months when he bred and was 52kg.

I know 8 months is still young in akita standards. The only reason I'm showing concern is because of the weight not moving, in fact some days going down, after almost 7 weeks now. I've not measured his heights, but my friends come over fortnightly and have commented saying he's not getting bigger. Obviously, that's not a professional analysis. But human are born with height/weight perception and can obviously tell if something is smaller or larger.

If my dog doesn't grow more, that's life, I love my dog. I was merely trying to get opinions.

    Hopefully this pic works.

  7. If he is healthy and happy, stop weighing him and enjoy him. Weighing and worrying about it won't change the end result

We bought him for shows. So it does matter if he's not the normal height/weight for an akita.

I have documented his weight his whole life. The last 6 weeks he has been between 38-40kg. Ultimately when you buy a large breed dog, you want it to grow large. As I said I love my dog, it's just disappointing having what looks like to be a miniature Akita.

I've tried contacting the breeder to no avail. When I bought him she told me the male was 50kg. I know that that doesn't mean the pup will, but it gives you an idea. He is pure bred, I have his papers and for the most part the breeder seemed credible.

I'm just frustrated. I've always wanted a big akita, it's why I paid so much money for him.

  8. Hi there. I've got an 8 month old akita. Up until 7 months he was growing really well. But it's now been almost a month and he's still 38kg. He's been that weight for a month. I got it from a registered breeder and his dad was roughly 50.

  9. I've spoken to the breeder. Main reason that he's limited is because she does not want me to breed him with others, I guess taking her buisness.

I expressed my desire to show him and the breeder has asked to see all sides of the dog and a movement vid, I think is reasonable.

He's 5 months old today actually. He stand 55cm and is 26kg.
