  1. Has anyone been to the Illawarra one?

Am going this Sunday to check It out

Any info on what they are like, greatly appreciated, :(

Hope to get my girl In, but she won't be competing though!

Even If we can just do the obediance and tracking part of It, I'll be happy,

at least I think I'll be allowed to use a muzzle on her.

    ETA: Oh and BUMP :(

I went to Illawarra a few years ago when it was on Saturdays.

The trainer was great and the people were very friendly and helpful.

  2. Shadow: We will definently look into the behaviour therapist - does any one have any good ones?

Contact K9 Force via PM or email he is in the Hawkesbury area of NSW. If you're not in NSW he can probably refer you to someone in your area.

Amhailte and Nekhbet have given some very good advice too.

    Here's some links:

Nothing in life is free (NILIF)

    Triangle of Temptation (TOT)

Both of these programs are a non-confrontational method of allowing your dogs to choose to respect you as their leader.

    edited to fix links

  3. Hi Toohey, sorry I should have been more specific. What RMB's are you feeding, chicken, roo, beef? Did the split nails start after a change in her diet or when you started cutting her food back?

If you can afford it http://www.naturalvet.com.au/ at Russell Lea.

The initial visit is 1 hour and from memory is about $170.

They take a full history and can advise you on what changes you might make to her diet.

They can prescribe traditional, homeopathic & chinese herbal medicines.

  4. It looks like I will have to stick to the DOL lunches in the city with no dogs.

You have a great time guys and I look forward to the photos.

Hey Myszka you can still go to a meet without your dog so you can catch up with other DOLers.

Maybe you could borrow one of Rex's dobe girlfriends for the day & bring her with you :vomit:

  5. I wouldn't take a fear aggressive dog to a DOL meet.

To paraphrase K9, it's only a training exercise if you have a goal and you control all the other players. I don't know how you can do that in a park full of excited dogs running, jumping, chasing & play barking.

How are you going to watch Rex from every angle to make sure your he isn't bothered by any of these dogs? Maybe you will be holding him on a short leash, alert for any approaching dogs, will he read the signals you are sending & become worried & stressed before another dog even approaches.

I've only been to 1 meet and when I arrived with my dog on-lead he was mounted by a dog before I got the gate shut at the park  A few other dogs came over to sniff the my dog which I think is normal behaviour. When I opened my bag a mob of dogs appeared to see if I had any food :)

I kept my dog on-lead to see how the other dogs behaved and then let him go off-lead. I was worried he would be rough with the little dogs but he was fine apart from continually sniffing a cute dane with pink toenails so I put him back on-lead to settle.

  6. tollersowned: If i could spit straight i would be training like this, but i cant and it tends to make them jump towards where the food is landing.

I might try holding the food in my mouth but not spitting to see if that works.

It took me a few weeks to get a good aim with spitting food.

Have you tried having the dog in front of you in a sit or drop & just letting the food drop out of your mouth. It takes a bit longer for the dog to get good at catching the food this way too.

  7. (steve, does NILIF make her sook more? She crys all the time now when she doenst get what she wants!! how long till it stops??)

Hi Tuberculosis I started NILIF with my girl 3 years ago and from memory it took 2 or 3 weeks for her to stop whining & howling to get what she wanted. She was very spoiled & used to getting her own way

When she whined & howled I would turn my head away & ignore her & wait for 5 minutes of quiet. I think it helped that she could see I wasn't reacting to her cries.
