  1. I'm in Chermside West :thumbsup::happydance2:

I can recommend Susan Dawson and the gang at Anvet Kedron. I've been going there for many years, and they do vet work for GAP and Friends of the Hound greyhounds, great rescue supporter.

QVS is excellent for emergency and specialist care. BVSC (Albany Creek) are also great specialists.

Welcome to the area! It's a great place to live.

  2. Jenna, I am sure your mum will miss you lots!

You were such a beautiful soul, and had the patience of a saint to put up with Ty :grouphug:

Enjoy the great greyhound couches in the sky....

Frankie is there to meet you too!

  3. What a beautiful girl - but happy at last it seems at your place!

Small comfort in her going the way she did, zoomies forever  :(

So sorry to hear LC .

    Take care of each other...

  4. What Crisovar said.

Sentinel Spectrum is an IGR - Insect Growth Regulator - that essentially renders adult fleas sterile therefore stopping the life cycle, but will not kill them. Adult fleas hopping on her dog will not die from Sentinel itself.

Suggest Capstar for adult flea observations, or one of the spot ons, (Advantage, Frontline Revolution etc) or even a flea bath will kill the adults and Sentinel should do the rest. The adults aren't alive for terribly long and not being able to reproduce, a flea population allegedly should come under control fairly soon :)

And yes, people often say different products have different effects. Different active constituents.

  5. Title: Hope Island Cup

    Date: Sunday August 24, 2008

    Time: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

    Location: Wally Tate Park, Kuraby

The Hope Island Cup event was introduced when the majority of dogs were sight hounds. Its

purpose was to give sight hounds an event, which would really test their stamina as these

hounds are expected to be able to hunt over great distances. A normal lure-coursing day

does not really challenge their staying power.

As more and more breeds joined the club, it was decided that these dogs should also be given

the opportunity to compete so the additional events were introduced. After all, why should the

sight hounds have all the fun?

To be eligible for these events, dogs must attend three of the six qualifying meetings. A dog

must have a minimum score of 150 in each of the qualifying meetings. The top 3 qualifying

dogs (on the top 3 scores) will compete with the next 2 qualifying dogs being reserves.

On the day of the event, all dogs entered are vetted before and after the first run and again

after the second run. The vet may withdraw a dog from the event at any time if it does not

recover well following either run or if appears to be stressed.

Three judges score each dog and the dog with the top aggregate score in each section is the

    winner.

A good day to come along and see some longer runs. Also I believe they will be doing fun runs/puppy runs if all goes to plan.

    Wish Aura luck!

  6. Hi everyone,

Just thought I would pop on here and give an update...

On Wed night Harvey had a 4-5 min seizure from which he recovered from as normal. Within 10-15 mins, however, he had another, and would not snap out of it. I took him straight to the e-vet (where i work, thank god, and 2 mins away) and he was given Valium anally. He was still in status/long petit mal(np paddling?) when I left him there, and eventually was back in the land of the living after 2 hours.

He was transferred to regular vet the next morning for babysit and no more seizures. I took him home Thursday night, all good, we left his catheter in just in case he needed a dose real quick but thankfully wasnt needed. He went back to regular vet for another babysit today as I had to work. He is home again now and still no seizures.

Phenobarb bumped up to 1/2 tab 30mg AM and PM. His Pb bloods were in the low end of normal range so he has room to move with higher doses.

He is still feeling a little tired and sad/sorry for himself, but his appetite has picked up and that little Harvey tail is going a million miles an hour!

Don't worry yourself Varicool, he is cuddled up with me and loving every minute the little sook.

You got yourself some good discounts along the way too as I mentioned your sob story lol!!!

So i guess the diagnosis is still unknown, hopefully the higher dose will control the seizures however. One of the Medicine specialists mentioned hydrocephalus as a possible cause but without an MRI you will never know...

    Here he is:

Notice the "Get Well" loveheart vetrap and new collar Varicool! I thought he deserved a treat for being a good boy!

  7. Name: Layka

    Age (optional): 28

    Location: Brisbane northside

Rescue Group: brisbane coordinator of Friends of the Hound

Time in Rescue: 6 years (not all with FOTH)

Who can vouch for: Varicool, Mita, Fiona, New Age Outlaw, probably others I can't recall atm.

Preferred Breed: Greyhounds, but have helped all and sundry

Experience (if any): I Work in the animal welfare industry and veterinary industry. Owned, rescued, transported animals since I can remember(and yes, I have a bad memory!)

    Microchip: Always

    Vaccination: Always

    Desexing: Always

Heartworm test: If older than 6 months and no proof of treatment(virtually impossible tho)

    Worming: Always

    Flea treatment: Always

Vet work if required: Through FOTH

    Basic training/teach manners: Always

    House train dogs: Yes

Dogs inside the home or outside: Both

Are you prepared to give extra care for a submissive nervous dog: Yes, depending on dog. Try not foster so much myself these days and tend to have the "in betweens" on their way to a carer or some such. FOTH will work with any dog they can, to try and assess its suitability for rehoming. We will also rescue from pounds and shelters (waiting list and foster carer permitting)

  8. I had this same question asked of me yesterday at the dog park in regards to an Aussie that was interested in coming.

    I replied as thus:

My greyhound lives with small fluffy white dogs and a cat. Lure coursing has not changed her behaviour at all with them or increased her prey drive. Believe me, if it put my other animals at risk I would not take her.

I think of it as an outlet for an instinct that they already have.

  9. I have always been advised to treat and test for heartworm in dogs over 6 months as we are in Brisbane.

Our other rescue coordinator in Murwillumbah has been told they do not need heartworm treatment in that area. Any greyhounds from there we have coming up to Brisbane to live or foster we test then treat anyway.

Are certain areas worse because of mosquito population, or incidences of dogs who have heartworm?

  10. Here's my list of reccommended vets I have had dealings with and would do so again:

West Chermside Vet Specialists(and Pet ER) - a must see reproduction specialist (Dr Thomas) and first class after hours emergency service, not really that expensive for after hours.

Greencross Chermside: principal vet and owner has a soft spot for greyhounds and is very much geared for what is best for the animal, not the bank balance(although sometimes includes both!)

Manly Rd Vet Surgery - 24 hr surgery - have not had my animals treated there, but a close friend works there as a vet and their large animal treatment there is amazing. Toured the premises last week and would be happy to leave my babes there. Plus they do greyhound rehoming!

Camp Hill Vet Surgery - Tiny but very very good with rodents - specialises in guinea pigs(not much help on DOl i guess!)

and last but not least my current vet of 5 years Anvet Kedron - Dr Susan is thorough, down to earth and flexible. Plus I used to teach puppy schools there - biased! I highly reccommend her work and people must like her also - they are always busy! Plus she is another greyhound supporter!

Always happy to reccommend good service...getting harder to find these days...

  11. whatever works eh!

I have been using shredded ham or bacon in my puppy classes, but fear it might be too fatty? Obviously only small amounts are given during a session. Just wondering if this kind of amount that one would use during training maybe twice or so weekly would be any reason to worry about pancreatitis or something?

Other things I use are cat kibble, nutri grain, cheese, dried liver, chicken, cabanossi, luncheon.

Just trying to find the safest option to recommend to clients.

    thanks for your replies everyone.
