    Smacking

she started puppy classes a couple of weeks ago but has only had 2 classes the first was a social interaction with other dogs and other people and the one we just attended was basic training sitting, stay ect the class im taking her too is a bit more of a train the owner how to train the puppy with a little help from the teacher or whatever you call them she is doing great with her basic commands. Before she was nipping my hand and i said naughty to her and she stopped and sat in front of me that is the first time she has ever stopped when i said something to her so i might keep trying to say it and see if that one works. She is a very active dog and with only me here to play with her she gets a little bored i let her play with my two out the back for about an hour but i have to watch them carefully and she will have to live inside because my female doesnt really like another dog coming into her little play group with my male she has always been like this and she will stand the pup for about an hour before she starts to get cranky. She is a very well behaved an easily trained dog the only thing im having trouble with is the nipping but she has responded a couple of times to the word naughty i didnt yell it at her i just said it and it stopped.

our pup is now 12 weeks old and one habit i cant break her from is biting me it is overexcited play biting and she only does it to me the other members of the family smack her on the bum when she nips at them and she doesnt do it to them anymore but i dont believe in hitting a dog to train them and ive made that point very clear to everyone else in the family. Ive tried saying no ive tried isolating her when she does it ive tried praising her when she doesnt do it ive tried not looking at her and stoping play when she does it but it does not work. The other people in the family have kinda lost interest in her so she is now left up to me and now only wants to play with me. She now weighs 13 kg and is getting stronger every day and the biting is getting more painful she doesnt bite at my feet or anything just at my hands and arms when we are playing and i dont play rough with her i play fetch games with her.
  3. i always worm my dogs on a day i will remember or write it on a calender and i have had a new pup for about 2 weeks now and she was really hard to get her to the toilet outside so what i did was i scrubed all the floors even if she hadnt been there and i took a peice of newspaper outside put it on the ground and let her pee on it because she was already used to peeing on newspaper it worked a treat. Then after a few goes i just took the newspaper away and didnt let her back inside until she went she does still leave a little present occasionally only because someone has forgotten to take her out but she wants to do it outside which means her training is working. Also when she is let outside for the toilet she has to go but then she gets to play with my boy dog which she loves so maybe you could find something he loves doing outside and let her have it or play after he goes.
  4. i think maybe her bed wasnt warm enough before
  5. my jacket has been spared over the last couple of days because i went to a baby store and bought the pup a lambs wool rug you know the type you put in a cot her favourite place in the house at the moment is her bed she loves lying on it. I also havent been getting woken in the morning because she chooses to sleep in her own bed instead now so its killed two birds with one stone
  6. is the kitten coming from a home with dogs cause i would think if it had never seen a dog before it would probably get freaked out and if your holding the kitten you will probably get scratched up
  7. well This morning when i woke up my jacket had found its way into the pups bed and she was rolled up in it fast asleep i woke up when everyone left this morning and was waiting for her usual cry to let her in my room and in my bed but it didnt happen so i got up to make sure noone had let her out and there she was. Last night when i finished work i dont remember picking it up of the lounge before i went to bed so i must have left it there. Thankfully it hasnt been chewed or stretched she seems to have just taken it over to her bed and curled up in it still not to happy about it but it is my fault for leaving it within her reach. I dont like training dogs by spraying water in there faces i find that sometimes that can make bath time a scary thought for them and while malamutes dont smell they do if they have been in the back yard with my boy who is disgusting and always finds something off smelling to roll in.
  8. i own a bright coloured lambs wool coat its about knee length and it drives the pup crazy she nips at it and pulls on it and barks at it when im wearing it i can wear any other coat but this one. Someone told me it was because it was knee length and flowed when i wore it so i put on one of my different types of coats similar length and the pup didnt do it it is made of a different material and this is the only difference that i can find. I love my lambs wool coat but she is destroying it so now i kinda dont want to wear it i dont know how to train this out of her ive tried telling her off ive tried ignoring her and ive tried to destract her with her own toy and reward her if she plays with her own toy instead of destroying my coat but it isnt working the more i wear it the worse it gets. This coat just makes her so mad she isnt playfully nipping or pulling on it it is a real angry growl and when she has a hold of it she is really trying to destroy it.
  9. I was readin through another post about a pup sleeping through the night and how you should ignore the pup. I work night shifts and on the nights that i work i finish at about 3 am sometimes 4 am and go home and sleep till about 11 am - 12 pm and i know the pup has had some people up a couple of times during the night not alot though. But when im sleeping im the only person home so if the pup cries i go and get her and put her in my bed and she snuggles into me until i get up but this is daytime so would it affect her night time training me doing this ? i dont want to affect the training but i need to be completely alert during night shift. after she has had a nap with me she then plays for the remainder of the day so she is getting alot of excercise oh and for those interested the introduction to my other dogs is going well. The male loves having a bounding pup around because it means he can carry on like a pup. Its still going slow with my female but we havent had anymore barking at the pup she stays her distance from the pup and allows the pup to come up to her and i think the pup knows that she isnt interested in playing. She does go up to the pup if the pup cries im still keeping her's and the pups contact very closely monitored while i let the male and the pup play within eye shot but i know he isnt going to hurt the pup.
  10. my male dog does this alot he also roles in his own or the other dogs if i dont pick it up in time some say it means something is missing from their diet but my dog is completely healthy and he also still does it.
  11. our new malmaute yelps at everything it is out of fright and not because she is hurt but when she sees the cat or you walk past her and your feet get a little too close to you she yelps but she can walk right up to your feet and doesnt do it. Everytime i hear her yelp like that i think somethings happened and it scares the hell out of me she is a very vocal dog and makes alot of weird sounds but i think the amount of things she yelps at {when she hasnt hurt herself} is a little odd. What do you think ? and how could we stop this ?

    Bed Wetting

possibly an infection my red cattle cross had one about 3 months ago and she is a super clean dog she wont go to the toilet anywhere near where she may sleep eat drink or play and all of a sudden she was wetting everywhere because she couldnt hold it
  13. i tried another introduction to my dogs which went a little better my girl was okay with the pup for about 10 mins but then she got sick of all the jumping around i think it is cause she is older she is 8. My male has alot more energy and enjoyed all the jumping around i think it is just going to take alot of time to get my girl to settle in with the new pup but the pup is understanding that she is boss and has been backing of or lying on her side in front of my girl. Pup has now been booked into puppy preschool and starts next week after she has her vac and microchip. A bit later on today i will let her play a little more with my two dogs. Still dont have a name for her but hopefully they will think of one soon. Pup had decided she had had enough of the cat last night and started barking at it the cat got terrified and bolted. She is still refusing to go to the toilet outside bcause of the rain so i had some little presents for me when i got up i might have to train the people in the house to pick up after her. It is only sprinkling a little today so hopefully she will feel better about it.
  14. I tried an introduction with my male a little while ago because i had to put flea treatment on them and so i bought him into the backroom and the pup was upstairs very scared at first but then my male sort of showed he only wanted to play so the malamute went nuts and was jumping all over him it went well. When i tried it with my female all went well at first the pup was upstairs again {behing a fly screen) she was a little more confident this time having just played with the male and at first my red cattle x sort of did an excited dance and the pup backed away from the screen at first but got excited again and charged up to the screen which either scared my female or saw it as a challenge and started barking the pup screamed and dropped onto its side and then everything calmed down. I decided to put the cattle x back outside to have breakfast rather then to keep things going the pup had quite a fright and i didnt want to scare her again i will try again a little later. She is a very lovely pup very cuddly and sooky especially since yesterday i had only seen her for about an hour before i had to go to work but she is trusting me. Last night they taught her to sit she is very eager to please. Now they or myself seens im the only one home of a day time have to teach her how to walk on a lead outside she will do it inside but gets to scared outside im not sure whether to use treats or praise she seems to respond well to praise and i have read that this dog breed can have weight problems. She is only 8 weeks old which i feel was a little young to come into a new home but i dont know the people she came from and i dont know the circumstance or the way they breed. Ive only ever had adult dogs from rescues im a sucker for a disadvantaged dog so i have never really dealt with pups before but i can say she is very well behaved she doesnt nip or jump up although when i was getting dressed she was standing next to me and when i put my pants on she grabbed the leg and tried to run of with it but it was just play and it is the only thing i have seen so far that would be considered nipping and i replaced my pants with a rope toy my mum bought her and she was satisfied with that. What age should she have her hips checked mum doesnt seem to concerned about this but i have read they can have HD and i have had a dog before that has had HD and i think she should be checked. what other health concerns in the breed that she needs to be tested for ? and what is day blindness exactly ?
  15. well pups first night went great i am a shift working i didnt get home until about 3 this morning and i found the pup fast asleep on the lounge however after i ate had a shower and got into bed it was about 4:30 am. When everyone left for work and school this morning at around 7:30 i was woken by actual wolf howling i wasnt aware they actually howled like a wolf but she very much does and she wouldnt stop until i got up so this is definetly going to be a problem for me. It has been such a long time since i first bought my two home they didnt come togeather but came about 6 months apart and were both adults but i didnt get any seperation anxiety's. I also found when i woke up this morning a note from my mum that said she wont go to the toilet outside because of all the rain and the cat keeps scaring her {stray that everyone in the neighbourhood feeds and if it is cold enough someone will usually let him in their garage} I didnt think it was normal for this breed of dog to be scared of a cat ? so anyway now im in bed with my laptop and a coffee and she is sitting next to me obviously upset because she is still letting out little whimpers. How do i deal with a pup with seperation anxiety ?
