  1. A vet check couldnt hurt, but I think patience is the key. It is hard, no matter how hard you try to be patient it does get waring after a while. Dont be too hard on yourself, Im sure you are doing the right thing as you have done it many times before.

Like sne said, one day it will just click...

  2. Well sticks in my craw to admit this :) but when I came home today my husband called me and proudly showed me our boys feet. He had trimmmed them and made a damned good job :p They look so good that they look like he has had them done at the groomers.......EEEEWWWWW it kills me to admit it, he made a much better job than I couldve. He says that when the hair grows back a little he will show me how to do it

And then to rub salt in the wound proudly announces that Jonah didnt move a muscle.......HUH, I said he was was probably petrified.........No not really, Just shows that husbands occassionaly come in handy for some things................

  3. Ok, thanx for the replies guys. Will definately get them clipped, he has been chewing at them heaps today. I checked them and cant see anything. I will leave it to the professionals as he hates his paws being touched at all, when you get to them with a brush you can feel his body tense. Havnt had him very long, so who knows his history....

OMG, it has been raining and he has been walking on the dirt outside. I was in the bedroom, when I came out there are huge dirty paw prints all over the carpet  Will wait until the dirt dries before i vacume. i guess I will see it is really stainproof/partyproof carpet. (I have a feeling the answer will be NO) :(

Editted to add heidig29, thats a good idea about getting them used to you touching their feet, I will try that

  4. My boy has big hairy feet, he has a lot of hair growing between his pads and toes. Sometimes is seems to bother him and he will chew at them. There doesnt look to be any fungusy, yeasty thing going on.

He looks to be crossed with a sheepdog/bearded collie, to me his feet look like a Clydesdale horses' feet, LOL.

Do they need clipping, do they usually get clipped as matter of course?

Always had short haired dogs, and never had this problem before.

Thanx in advance for any answers...

  5. Thank you for your caring thoughts it is much appreciated.

I have just re-read it and it is a little embarassing, certainly not used to pouring out my emotions on a public forum. Just really had to do that yesterday helped me cope with a very hard day........

  6. Before I start to write this I beg your forgiveness for my self indulgence, this is going to be a long post. I apologizse if i make spelling mistakes or parts dont make sence but I know if i re-read it I will not post it, but I really need to do this........ I would really like to tell the world about my beautiful gentle giant. I know everyone has stories about theri dog....

His name was TAHI. We are NZ's and that is the Maori word for the "number one."

365 long days ago we gave my beautiful Greyhound his wings. He was a huge dog, everyone that met him laughed and said he was a small horse. He lived to the grand old age of 16 which is amazing for a Grey.

I got him from Lort Smith hospital, there was a litter of 12 that had been dumped. The minute I saw him, and he saw me that was it. I picked him up and he put his long gangly legs around my neck and wouldnt let go. We hadnt gone ther intending to get another dog. My husband said no, it ended up in a huge brawl. I cried, ranted and raved and got him anyway.

If a dog can be perfect he was. I think back and he really wasnt a normal puppy, no chewing, barking, naughty things that puppys can do. There was no training, I showed him once what to do and he would do it, no fuss, just did it. From the beginning he and I had a special bond, people would be blown away when they saw the things he did. I didnt need words, i always joked that we had ESP, but really I wasnt joking, we did.

He was the grocery keeper. I would bring the groceries in from the car, while I was out getting the next lot he was guarding it, he wouldnt let the 2 cats or other little dog go near them. If he couldnt have them, they certainly wasnt either. He would push them away with his nose, like a sheepdog protecting his flock. He would get scratched but he was the grocery keeper and that was that!!

When my son was at high scholl he had a friend that lived on a farm, this boy used to come to our house on a morning, let himself in and sit in the lounge till we got up. One day he was hungry and made himself some toast, Tahi followed him into the kitchen and watched, then he stated to bark until Anthony gave him some toast. From that day on when Anthony came in he had to make Tahi toast, or he would blackmail him by barking...

When my daughter was a teenager she went through a rebellious period. One night she opened her bedroom window and climbed out, went to meet friends. Tahi came into the bedroom and woke me up, I could see he was upset and agitated, when I got up he took me straight to her romm to show me that she had jumped through the window.. he was agitated until she came home, she tried to climb through the window. He was sat in her room and as soon ash she put her head through the window he started yapping at her. She tried to tell him to be quiet but he was really "pissed off" with her. Of course I was sitting in the lounge with the light off waiting....

Another night he ran ito the bedroom and jumped on me quite roughly, when I woke up I could smell smoke, we had a fire in the house and hadnt woken up, he may have saved our lives.

My husband was on night shift, at 2am there was a knock on the door, it was a strange bloke, he said he wanted to come in. Of course I told him to get out, but he started walking around the outside of the house, at first Tahi was on guard but not too bad, the bloke started to knock again, my beautiful gentle Greyhound turned into a snarling, frothing, DOG. He would not be calmed, I put his lead on and opened the door. He lunged at the man, luckily the bloke jumped back. He then satrted to run out of the gate, Tahi broke his lead and chased him. As soon as Tahi got to the driveway he stopped, I think the bloke is still running. I had never seen him like that before, and I never saw him like that again ever. To this day I didnt know what the bloke wanted, but I think we were lucky as he had a knife in his hand, I saw it as he was running away.

The little boy next door came through the gate one day and was calling me in the back yard, Tahi was out with me. I started to walk to the boy , I could see something in his hand, so did Tahi. It was a rabbit, Tahi took off running towards him, I was shouting to go back out of the gate. My boy was gentle, but I thought a rabbit was just too much temptation even for a gentle Greyhound. Tahi grabbed it out of his hands, i was screaming at him, and slowly walked to the verandah, where he proceeded to gently put the rabbit down and then started to lick and clean it......he loved it, he was besotted with it.

He never showed any signs of pain or discomfort, was still eating up until 2 days before he died. I got up one Sunday morning and he satyed in bed, which was unusual. I called him and he walked slowly out, I could see he was not well. He was quiet all day Sunday, didnt want dinner. Early Monday morning he was worse, I took him to the vet and they did a barrage of tests and blood tests. They lifted his lip and his gums were pure white, my heart sank. Of course I was in a state. He was so thirsty, just kept drinking and drinking. The vet said that it didnt look good. Monday night I slept on the floor with him, he was restless. I must have fallen asleep, when i woke I was shocked to see his stomach was so bloated. I waited for the vet to ring with the results, the courier was late. It was luch time by the time the results were back. It was the worst possible result. The results showed he had a tumour and it was bleeding. Tahi was outside on his dogbed, I walked out and saw his face coverd in flies. His pet hate in life was flies and here they were walking all over his face and he didnt care. I looked at his eyes and they were so dull. It was true my darling darling boy was dying...I knew what we had to do. I rang the vet and told them we were on our way.

I committed the worst act of cowardess and betrayal in my life that I have ever done, when he needed me most I wasnt there. I did not go, my husband and daughter took him down. I couldnt go...I would have been utterly hysterical and inconsolable, Im sure I would have started screaming. I certainly not proud of myself, in fact I am utterly ashamed of myself. I will carry that to my grave...

I put his lead on him, as he was walking through the gate he stopped, turned around and looked at me. That moment is in my head forever like a recording, he knew what awaited him but you know what, he forgave me. He would forgive his mamma anything. My husband said that he just laid down at the vets and looked up into his eyes, he had resigned hiimself......

So to you my darling sweetest kindest boy I ask once more for your forgiveness......and to tell you that there is not a day I dont think about about you and if there is any way we will be together again one day mamma will make it happen. You were my soulmate and my best friend....my life is so much t richer for knowing you.....

Goodbye my darling it is time for mamma to let you go.....I will love you till my dying day

  7. Hmm havnt been a member for very long, so I have not seen the discussions about the injections. I have just done a search but for some reason I cant use it, can someone please put a link on for me. I didnt know there was an issue with it, got my boy done 2 weeks a go. Youre damned if you do, youre damned if you dont, LOL

  8. Just a note to add, when you get the butcher to split saw the bone lengthways just be a bit careful. I once did that for my boy to a big marrowbone, went outside a few minutes later to see pools of blood. He had split his tongue open because the edges of the cut bone were so sharp.......razor sharp actually. I didnt notice before I gave him the bone. From then on, I got it cut into 2 halves straight across the middle.

Not meaning to put a dampner on things but just thought I should mention it :(

    edited for spelling

  9. Hi Fang, thank you for giving this grey another chance....

I am going to add my 2 cents worth here.

A lot of these greys have had no contact with the outside world at all, apart from being taken to the track etc. So if you put yourself in their shoes and think about what they feel when they are thrust into the outside world, you will realise what they must feel. Some are very confident and just fit into everyday life, some are absolutely terrified and can take while to adjust. The tv, loud noises, everything that we take for granted can frighten them. I didnt even realise that myself until recently.

Also a lot of greys have not had a normal puppyhood, so when they come out of racing even though they might be 2 or 3 years old they seem to go through a type of delayed puppyhood. What we would normally expect from a dog of that age to be over, chewing, sillyness etc they just begin to go through.

Greyhounds are beautiful gentle intelligent creatures that are very sensitive and yours will reward you with many years of love and loyalty, my boy lived to the grand old age of 16 and I am so grateful that I had this time with him. He actually saved our lives once when we had a fire in our house, the house was full of smoke and for some reason none of us woke up, he came to the bedroom and started jumping on me....

I could sit here all night and tell you stories about him, but I guess what I am saying is that if you invest the time and patience into your grey you will be rewarded 10 fold.

  10. He he, like I said I can laugh about it now.....

But I agree about the pack mentality, was going to mention that.

Im sure thay say to each other, "Look I can p**s more that you can, nah nah take that"

Have you ever noticed that when one gets something new, they are like children, the others want that "thing" too, and they end up fighting over it...

In the end I end up taking it away and say to myself "why did I bother", how many times do you say that to the kids too:rofl:

Sorry Bitty doesnt fix your problem, LOL

  11. Cant really add anything constuctive ideas.

BUT....... we added a large extension to our house. I bought a beautiful very very expensive carpet for this room. All my cats and dogs are VERY toilet trained, and have not gone to the toilet in the house for years, plus added a dog/cat door.

They had the run of the house day and night, never any problems.

The day the carpet was laid I also had 2 new lounge suites delivered, so there I was all evening stood in the doorway very proud of the new carpet and lounges.

Got up the next morning and OMG, there was piles of poo and wees in 5 places :o :D

I was heartbroken  AND my cats had used the corners of the lounges as scratching posts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The point of this story is that WHO KNOWS WHAT GETS IN THIR HEADS..... :p

They have NEVER done it in there since, they just had to show that damn carpet who was the boss

I can laugh about it now but has taken a while, LOL

  12. Thanks so much for sharing that t-time, I KNOW how hard it is. I lost my boy last March and there is not a day goes by that I dont hink of him

This boy is just as you describe your dog, to a tee! My family also reckon he is like a cartoon character, he is very goofy. We call him a gentle giant.

    This is just so surreal.......

He is feeling sorry for himself tonight as he was desexed today. As soon as I saw a photo and description of him I knew I had to have him, I took him sight unseen and am so happy with him........he is such a big sooky bubba too. :p

Edited to ask what is chronic HD, heart disease??

  13. OMG I am astounded............ I jst called everyone in my house to come and have a look at "jonahs" picture i had put on the net. (I showed them yours)

They all said "yeah, what jonahs looking athe camera, so what???????" When I told them it wasnt Jonah but another beautiful boy they didnt believe me, LOL

Tell me about him t-time, has he a gorgeous nature like my boy? Gentle, kind, calm? What breed was he, we are not too sure about this one....we say bearded collie X wolfie......

    :):hug::hug: AMAZING

  14. I have never met such a beautiful natured dog in my life, Im besotted with this boy. He just trys so hard to please everyone :):mad:mad

This is "till death do us part"

Cant find the camera cord to d/loaad to the computer, these photos are courtesy of aunty Fiona,LOL

His coat is actually very soft, I thought it would have been wiry when I saw a photo of him. When I comb him the long hair doesnt brush out, he has a downy undercoat that combs out.

Opinions on what to do please.
