  1. Well, took the pooch to the vet today. Apparently the tooth is not hurting him (still cant work out why, cause it should be) - my vet gave it a good going over - and so he recommended keeping it in but monitoring it regulary as it will most defineatly have to come out as some stage during his life . Capping or root canal was ruled out as it was unlikely it would last and then I would most likely have to take the tooth out anyway. Thanks for all the comments.
  2. Well the pulp is definately showing but there is still a good half a tooth remaining in tack. I phoned my vet as soon as it happened and they did not seem to worried as long as it was not infected - that was a few weeks ago now. I only started worrying about it once I googled broken dog tooth. He does not seem to be in any pain - he still plays, chews bones, plays tug of war etc fine. He chews on both sides too. I wish I knew if he was in pain a human would be I think? If I take him to a specialist it would be a 300km trip - apparently there are no specialist in Canberra for dog teeth - all they can do here is remove the tooth. I am also worried that, given he is a staffy, if I get an implant or root canal it will only work short term. My dog loves to chew and tug at things...
  3. This is truely disgusting!! I have never heard of such a thing. Surely if you got your pets approved before the new by-law came into effect you and the other pet owner in your block should be allowed to keep you current pet until the end of his/her natural life! I can understand if a new owner was not allowed to keep a pet but to do this to existing pet owners is just aweful. I would put a bit of effort in up front to see if I could win this but would try to avoid too much stress. BC are not good to be in - who want to always be told how to run their property anyhow!? Remember, in the end it is the people and pets we live with that make us what we are - not the bricks and mortor - well I think so anyhow. Goodluck.
  4. Thanks for the responses. I am going to take him to visit the vet again on Monday. I thought it was better to extract the tooth before it got infected and caused him pain but perhaps it is just better for me to wait and see how it goes....
  5. Hi all, my 2 year old staffy broke his canine (large bottom) tooth playing with his staffy ball about 6-8 weeks ago . He did not seem to be in pain so my vet said to monitor it. I have noticed that the pulp is showing and so am now worried he will get an infection or that the broken tooth is causing him pain (although he does not seem to be showing any signs of pain). I understand that I can have the canine extracted if I want or can go to Sydney and get root canal work done. Since the canine is such a big tooth with deep roots - will he look funny in the jaw if I take it out - will he still be able to play and eat ok? Anyone got any experience on removal or root canal on canine teeth? Appreicate some advice...
  6. Ok well I went to visit my vet yesterday, we are getting one at 12 weeks not 10 as previously planned. This means pup will have one at 6 weeks and 12 weeks. After the second vaccine he will need to wait 2 weeks then go to puppy school. We will then get a booster each year. This means my pup will be 14 weeks before he is allowed to venture in the big wide world (without me carrying him or being crated that is).
  7. Thanks again, great ideas and advice - very much appreciated . The chicken ice block would have been handy today He is gonna love that.
  8. Phew, thanks! My butcher loves him so he gets raw bones too but seem to prefer the pig ears . I gave him a few chicken necks but I am not convinced he is chewing them very well - he is a bit of a guts with chicken necks. I also tried stuffing treats in his baby kong but he hasn't taken to that either.
  9. My pup cant get enough of pig ears! He is a staffy and so needs to chew but is there a max amount of pig ears I should give him each week ? He is probably going through about 2-3 a week right now. Thanks in advance
  10. Thanks everyone. Seems like there is a bit of variation going on so I will talk to my vet on Monday and take it from there. I cant get into a obedience school until next Feb - they dont run schools over summer - thus my decision to do the RSPCA puppy class. I will take my pup to obedience school from Feb next year but right now though it is just puppy class for us
  11. Hi all, I have a staffy puppy. I want to take him to puppy school ASAP and the local RSPCA is holding one on the 21st October. The RSPCA said that my pup only needed the first vacination ie the one he had at 6 weeks. All the same I prefer him to have had his 12 week booster. The breeders vet card shows that the next booster is due on 23rd October ie when he is 11 weeks. My vet said he can have the booster 1 weeks earlier than recommended ie 10 weeks. This means he will be having his 12 week booster at 10 weeks of age and there will be a 5 day lag before he goes to puppy class. This whole thing is a bit confusing to me. Seems like my pup will be having his 12 week booster at 10 weeks of age and there is a 5 day lag before the booster takes effect. Can someone please tell me is this seems odd to them or ok? I love my pup and dont want to hurt him by giving him his booster to early. Thanks for the help
