  1. Angus is 10 months now and still usually has a 2am pee break every night. I don't mind getting up as he's straight to business and back inside on his bed within about a minute It really doesn't bother me. Just think, how would you feel if you really had to pee but had to hold it all night? If they need to go, then they need to go.
  2. ya I used to buy the more expensive brand but we switched to coles brand which is only about 60c a pack and he still loves it, plus his coat has never looked better. I wipe his face down and give him a doggy breath mint after and that seems to take care of the bad fishy breath problem lol
  3. Umm. We have a dog at our shelter that does this, he is also Deaf! So I would go to the vets and get them to check his hearing if I were you.
  4. Umm Sardines in olive oil mixed with his dry for one of his meals about once every 3 days. Everyone comments on his silky smooth coat
  5. hmm I was wondering about this the other day actually. We currently use Advocate but my vet was trying to talk me into Sentinel. Angus never has any fleas so I hadn't thought of changing, but it is really annoying putting it on the back of his neck, as he's 50kg now there is so much liquid for his size and half of it always ends up running off his back. As he's an inside dog it always ends up on something and it stains and smells. Might finish off this pack, then make the switch
  6. HI guys, thanks for all the replies! Angus is doing a little better, but still very stiff, and one of his legs is a little turned in now. We are going to have the xrays done. It's expensive, but at least it should let us know what's going on. We are still looking into Chiro as well though. We are booked in for Thursday the 5th for the xrays, he got an ear infection and we had to wait untill that was cleared up before they would put him under. Can't see why it would have mattered, but I'm not a vet :D I'll let everyone know what the news is as soon as we know
  7. thanks heaps Sway. I'm going to ring a few tomorrow and let you guys know what happens. Fingers Crossed
  8. hi guys and thanks for all the replys! Angus is doing ok. We have booked him in to have the xrays under anaesthetic on Monday, so I guess we will just have to wait and see. The vet said it also might be a soft tissue or muscle injury. They felt all around both legs from the toes to the hips and he didn't show any signs of pain, that's the weird part! It's like he's just stiff or something? Really strange. We took his own Hammock bed with his doona to the kennels so he would have been sleeping on that. And the kennels are heated so he wouldn't have caught a chill. He's definately not constipated Still does about 3 big poos a day lol They said he hurt himself trying to get out of one of the exercise yards. which is strange as he's never tried to get ut of anywhere else, maybe just because he was stressed out I'm not sure? Sway is going to put me onto a good Chiro in the area hopefully so cross fingers that it will help. I know xrays are expensive but it still seems alot. We would pay anything to make sure he's ok so it's not a money issue, I just sometimes think that vets are ripping us all off I've worked as a vet nurse for 5 years and I can tell you that there is NO way it costs them anything close to that. Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. i'll keep posting with updates when the xrays are done. Hopefully it's nothing serious!
  9. Hi everyone. Got back from our honeymoon and Angus must have hurt himself somehow in the boarding kennels! He is soo stiff around the back section now and I'm really worried it's going to be something with his hips. He's usually tearing around and now he just gingerly walks so out of sorts. Took him to the vets today and he's got to have some xrays that are going to cost $500 or more. this sounds excessive to me? He's only 7mths old, I really can't believe this is happening Does anyone know anything about these kinds of things, or have any personal experiences to share with me?
  10. My mum's Cavalier love to eat cat poo! YUK. She's done it all her life. Have just gotten her out of it. Mum started to sprinkle a bit of pepper on the cat poo, then let her go at it, when she sniffed/tasted the pepper she shook her head and walked away, continued doing this untill she just didn't bother with it anymore. Of course you have to be there for this to happen, so not to sure if it will help
  11. we feed our Dane on roo mince and Science Diet Kibble. Have just switched from Eukanuba as it made his skin hot and itchy. He's been great on this new diet. We sometimes give him the roo tails for outside chewing, which is great because he usually chews everything else up in about half an hour lol. It does smell horrible though! I wash and wipe his face down before letting him back inside after feeding, then give him a "yip yap doggy breath mint" and it's like he never ate the roo mince Have you tried him on a hypoAllergine food like S/D ZD or something similar from Royal Canine?
  12. Yeah we feed our boy either an egg, or sardines in oil for his coat every few days, he looks great! Always get compliments about his coat. We have never tried giving the shell too though! Didn't even think you could. Is it suppose to be even better for them? might try with Angus but I'm not sure he'd go for it. He can be a bit precious about his food sometimes
  13. I have just gotten Angus a chain (click on) lead. Has stopped the problem as it probably isnt very fun to chew
  14. thanks for the well wishes Tessabella Oh and Angus is a G.Dane Jellybean. He's 5 months old now
  15. Hope these don't come out to big.
  16. ahh thanks for all the replies everyone. Yes he is fully vaccinated, I'm a vet nurse so there's no problems with the health side ;) just the little things I don't really know. Yes we always try and stop him from jumping around but he sometimes slides along our floor as we have polished timber flooring and it's impossible not to, but this only happens when he's barelling around being a dope. We play with him alot, and run around the back yard, and he's been through puppy pre-school. We are enrolling him in obedience soon but have to wait until after we get back from holidays in a few weeks. He never get's tired on the walks, he's still pulling by the time we get back home. We take him everywhere with us so he's pretty well socialised, just very protective of us, but I've read that's in the breed. Thanks again for the help guys. I think we will continue little 10min walks 2-3 times a week even just to keep his socialisation skills up and i'll post some photo's soon!
  17. we took Angus to puppy pre-school which was great, even just for the socialisation alone. Getting married in 3 weeks though so we are going to wait until we get back then enroll him and really get stuck into it :p
  18. Hi all. We have a 5 month old Great Dane pup, and I was just wondering if it's safe to exercise him yet? We have heard from some people that you should never exercise them before 12 months, and some people say it's ok to walk them and stuff. Just not really sure. We started taking him on small (very short) walks about a month ago. He's such an active pup that he needs to burn his energy off somehow. Playing in the backyard is a daily ritual as well. Usually after his little walk he trots straight into our room and sleeps for a couple of hours. I'm just not sure if we will damage his hips and knee's or not. When I say short walk, I mean about 10mins, around the park and that's it. I'd really love some views guys. thanks.
  19. wow thanks Allerzeit, that was a good diagram too look at. Our new pup has a slightly undershot jaw and even though I'm familiar with them, it's good to see a proper picture of it.
  20. Frufru, I got a bad vibe when we went to pick him up, Not when I left him there. What I said in my post is that the lady gave me a bad vibe by what she said to me after he was already groomed. I would never leave my dog with someone I didn't trust. People are so quiclk to point the finger here sometimes.
  21. we once had to take our shihtzu "zac" to another salon one time, he was so upset and nervous when we got him back that to this day I'm still sure they must have hit or yelled at him, will never take him there again. We take him to another one now and he's very happy, never had a problem! I got a bad vibe from the other place though, when we went to pick him up, the lady goes "oh the little shihtzu, he was so loud and naughty all day"
  22. I've never heard that put so well before H20!
  23. put a tick collar on him. If he get's a tick just put a little bit of alcohol on it and the tick should drop off. Don't just pull it off or you could leave the head in your dog and inadvertantly squeeze the poison from the tick into him. There are tick hooks you can buy that dig in and grab the head of a tick. Also something like Frontline plus or Advantix should help if you apply it before going away.
  24. ahh my cavalier pup was like this when we first tried to take her walking. She would just freeze and not move and start crying. We just started walking with her in our hands while walking our other dog, then would put her down every now and again, eventually she was so pre-occupied with keeping pace with our Shihtzu that she forgot to be scared lol
  25. umm at work we sometimes soak the Science Diet for the dogs the day before, then put it in the fridge overnight. Not sure if this would work for you or not.
