  1. When Frozen Puppies dot com were in operation, you may remember a product they sold called 'Boost Up Ya Boys' to help with semen production. I need to increase semen concentration for freezing from an older dog. He was collected last week, twice and only managed to get 1 breeding unit from him. I'm going to go back and do it again, but I want to give him every chance to produce more. Does anyone know if this product is still available in any form or does anyone have any tips to boost up sperm concentration?

  2. Hi Cass, I was just about to ask a similar question. My was more related to where is the best place to get semen collected and stored in Brisbane. I know the different places vary in price quite considerably. I was also wondering what company does the syndicate sharing of a canister going to Europe and are they still doing it. If you find out anything, can you please let me know too?

  3. I think it definately depends on the vet and their equipment. I had an ultrasound on my bitch at 31 days from first mating, they counted 6 and were very confident with their numbers. Sure enough 6 were whelped. I have referred friends there aswell and each time they have had an accurate count! Other people I know who have been to other vets have had inaccurate counts.

  4. For a beginner the most important thing I have found is to watch the classes being judged before you (if your not first breed on) to find out how the judge is judging. You can mentally prepare yourself for where you are going to stack up in the ring, if you are going to do a lap before stacking or if the judge wants you to go in and stack straight up. Groom your dog the best you can, handle with half a clue and present your dog and yourself with confidence. Confidence goes a long way, even if you dont feel confident, look confident. Dont fidget, dress nice and learn as you go. Good luck.

  5. I agree with Karen on the temp dropping only for a few hours and it can happen in the middle of the night when your not taking her temp only to go back up by morning. Lady's dropped at 10:30pm, well after the normal time I was taking it. I only stayed up with her that night and re took it because she started to get restless and was panting heavily. It was almost like she went into labour an hour or two before the temp drop. Other bitches I have had part of whelping have had the temp drop around the same time as onset of 1st stage labour.

Keep your eye on a drop below 37 deg. Anything higher than that and I wouldnt get too excited.

  6. Update:

I took one of my dogs to be xrayed today. I arrived at 1.30pm with the dog, she was xrayed and collected at 3.30pm. I had the scores emailed to me at 6pm. Every single person I met was lovely and polite. They were very good with the dog and had everything done in amazing time! For those interested; Xrays were performed at Mount Barker Veterinary Clinic by Sarah L Van Breda, and were handed to Rob Rawlinson to be read and scored at that time.

The breakdown in price is as follows:

    Consultation: 42.00

    Anesthesia: 155.00

    Radiology

    - Hip Dysplasia Radiograph: 112.00

    - Additional Radiograph Views: 93.40

    Total: $402.40

    Hip + Elbow reading: 100.00

    Total: $100.00

    TOTAL: $502.40

I will happily recommend both Mount Barker Veterinary Clinic and Dr Rob Rawlinson to anyone in SA or willing to travel.

Wow a clinic that actually reads them right there and then! I'm impressed! Whilst the cost is a little higher, the service sounds great! I wish I lived in SA.

Out of interest, how were the scores?

  7. Our uneven nipples skip a generation here 9, 10, 9, 10. I guess the next will be 9 :)

I've bought in a new bitch line where I have bonus nipples now, sharing the one boob, he dam is the same. Got to love getting bonus bits! Got a bonus tooth too.

  8. Vaccines are developed by a couple of different methods. An inactivated virus where the virus has been cultured and inactivated is the most common way of making vaccines.

Animals like humans sometimes have the inability to convert this virus to immunity. It is very rare that a human or dog can not convert immunity to every disease unless they are immunocompromised, but it is quite common for an animal or human to not convert to one disease.

  9. Geoff (MM and my regular vet) is around $320 without wyburns reading fee.

Calamvale are $270. I've had three Borders go through that vet and have been happy with the positioning and the resulting scores.

Seems ther further you travel the cheaper it gets, but the money you save traveling to get the cheap price you spend in Petrol :provoke::provoke:

Its always the way. And pertrol is so damn expensive.

My usual vet is Burpengary, they charge $330 WITH Wyburn scoring. Might be worth checking them out, they would be quite close to you. Will save Shelby a sicky car ride. I have always got good scores from him.

  10. It's a bitch that meets my approval.

She maybe lovely, registered and titled but unsuitable for the male (same faults, doubling on a health issue etc).

So basically I ask bitch owners to do the sell on me. Why do they wish to use my male, what they are after? If I can see their reason and logic in it, and there should be no serious health issues, then I say yes.

To me a bitch owner who asks to use my male "to see what we get" or to "get new lines" (ie imported ones) is going to be a flat no, unless I've been secretly scheming to get the bitch :( . But that is a very rare thing.

I totally agree. The bitch could be the nicest bitch I have seen but if the owner can not justify why they want to use my dog then its a big NO. I'm not interested in my dog being used just because they like him or like the lines. The dog has to compliment their bitch in conformation, type and temperament and if they cant tell me the faults in their bitch and how they think my dog will help to fix this in their lines then sorry, its a no.

I have only allowed 3 of the dozen or so enquiries I have received for him. Some people may think I'm too harsh, but I dont want my dog to become a popular sire or for him to go to any old bitch. I want him to produce special puppies that will do well in the breeders chosen field.

Any idea if he will score them without them being done under GA? I have a friend who sent some to Prof Wyburn last week that weren't done with GA, so the AVA wouldn't be able to score them even if she gets them back.

How would they know if it's been done with GA or without?

The vet has to sign a declaration on the form to the AVA that states the X-Ray was taken under GA.

Wyburn's form does not have this on there and he is happy to score them without. Our vets never use GA (unless the owner requests it) if the dog will stay still for them and therefore send them all to Wyburn. One of mine that refused to held down was knocked out but my others have been done without.

Thanks, I hope Dr Lavelle will do it without GA.

  13. People can say what the like on FB, I'm all for freedom of speech. What annoys me is people who exhibit under judges they have on the FB friends list and have a brag about how well their dogs are doing the week before they are due to judge and post photo's of them with their dogs, knowing full well they are doing it just to grab the judges attention. That to me is no different from emailing a picture of themselves and their dog and a list of recent wins to the judge to let them know who the winner should be. And yes I have witnessed this done also. Sad really that people will use these tools to get further. I much prefer to win on my dogs merits. I'm not well know and I dont talk to judges, every single win I have had with my dogs has been on their merit alone, that is much more satisfying.
