  1. Ok. Thanks for your help tilly. I will let you know how I go. Can you buy the Malawash at Bunnings? Otherwise will have to wait until Monday!
  2. Ok, will be going and getting some Malawash. Under the house is quite a confined space, will my hubby need to wear breathing apparatus to spread the lime/ spray Malawash?
  3. We have bombed the house and there are less in here, we also have a dyson which we empty everytime after we vacuum. What is Malawash and where can you buy it from? I am not sure whether I want to lay out money on something that may not work, that is why I am planning on getting in the professionals, but I was wondering what harm the chemicals they use are doing to the animals?
  4. I know there is a sticky about fleas, but I want to know about spraying and if it affects your animals? We have an absolute infestation at the moment, inside and out, apparently the infestation may be coming from under the house, which neither animal has access too, but is apparently because of all the rain/flash flooding and larvae have been washed into soil under the house, driving me crazy! We have tried things ourselves but is not working so we want to call in the "big guns". We have about a two week wait though! I know they say that your fish tank should be covered, but what about the effects on the walking/roaming animals?
  5. Thanks everyone for your responses, he is about 16mths old and is around 25-30kgs. They are not really groomers, it is one of those hydrobath people, he really looks forward to it and now just sits there. I do think he is a bit matted around his leg areas - they are off limits to him to brush, but i always give him a go over with a brush on the back and underbelly at least once a week. I think I will go with the complete trim to start with and then go from there. I have been quoted between $40-50 to have him done and apparently this is quite cheap. How hard of a job would it be to do it myself if I bought my own clippers? Again, thanks everyone!
  6. Hi, I didn't want to overtake the clipping the 7yr old retriever post, but I have a GRxstandard poodle and get him washed once a month and the people who do it have said to get him clipped. I will attach his picture as I am not sure whether his hair is more poodle like or GR. He does shed ( yes, that's right) and even though he is washed once a month is quite knotty. What do people think, should I clip or not clip? http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u176/Do...oo/jackcrop.jpg - the most recent. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u176/Do...oo/100_1102.jpg - this one was a few months ago but he is standing.
  7. PW that poodle looks like it has had fairy floss glued to it
  8. :p I have never heard of "eye tacking". What is it and why is it done? Gorgeous puppy by the way!
  9. I wanted to give him something other than the normal bones, chicken necks, carcasses etc. The toy sounds like a great idea!
  10. After reading through quite a few posts I noted that some pets are put on medications that have the same name as human medications. i.e. Endep. Are they the same as human drugs or are they specially prepared for animals and use the same names, which would also mean the same company makes them? I would think that maybe the doses maybe alot different too?
  11. It is nearly Jack's first birthday (30/6) and I am after some suggestions of food I can give him to celebrate. In another post I note that someone gave their boy a small piece of choccy cake as well as some other things. Is a small piece of chocolate cake ok, or is it a definite no, no?
  12. We had this problem too so I ended up putting everything half way over the line and winding it right up, there was no way Jack was able to get it, now due to a certain little nephew who decided my line was a swing I put Jack in his play area whilst it is out.
  13. My Maltese Gizmo was around eight years old when she starting having fits last year. She started having them quite regularly and one night alone we counted at least eight, we took her to the vet who told us that unfortunately at her age that it was unlikely that it was epilepsy and that it was more than likely she had a small tumour on her brain that was causing the seizures. He also said that although we counted at least eight she could have been having double what we counted. They were very distressing, not just for her, but my eight year old son and even the cat, who even though they weren't the best of pals could sense that something wasn't right. We decided to put her to sleep nearly a year ago ;), we just couldn't see her suffering any more, We will miss her forever! BTW I found it sooo hard to make the decision and I took my sis-in-law and my husband came as well, I couldn't do it alone. I can still remember the noise in the dead of the night and wake up thinking she is still here, it is getting better, but I miss her so much. I am sorry if this is no help but your post reminded me over again.
  14. We were in Darwin over five years ago and at that time the toads had only come as far as Kakadu! Soon enough they will be taking over Australia. We have friends in Qld who also have a 9 iron ready and regularly have a "practice". ;) eta: I am really missing Darwin at the moment, the cold weather is coming so fast, not to mention the public holidays that we don't get down here!
  15. I sharpen my scissors on the neck of a brown glass beer bottle. I open them up and make a cutting motion all the way to the end - it worked great and my fringe was neat for once!
  16. I have good news. Jack kept chewing the water bucket ( and everything else in sight) and we tried so many different things too but now have found the answer. We bought a ceramic tub, it cost about $30 but we had already spent quite a bit on buckets, lol. We just bought it from a pet supply store. It is also heavy so he is not even able to tip it over!! No more water everywhere. (except for what drips off his beard, lol). Just thought I would share.
  17. I folded the clothes half over the line including towels and wound it up as high as it could go, it worked for a while but my line is really old and leans on one side. I tried the balloons with water, but I have a dog who loves water so was a fun game for him.
  18. Thanks for the replies, I usually buy two weeks worth and freeze one and keep out the other, but I will now be doing what Cav said. I also find the same with the mince that I mix with rice and pasta, should I be freezing those in day lots too?
  19. I just wanted to find out whether it is ok to give smelly meat to your dog? I bought some chicken carcasses which I give once a day, but by the say 5th day they still look good but have a slight smell. Now I know that if it was me (as a human)I would not eat anything that smelt "off". Is it bad to give it too him?
  20. Jack has been doing the same thing. I am beginning to think it is just for attention ( he gets more than his fair share) even if he gets some sort of response he doesn't go back for that, but then tries for something else when the response from the previous thing dies down. I thought kids were difficult, lol, sometimes I don't know so much! I used this idea for Jack jumping up on me as my voice is not strong enough, I used his aluminium bowl and a stick to make the noise and it worked wonders...... NO MORE JUMPING (yay).......
  21. Ok, maybe the jump on her remark didn't help, but if Rhi already said the pup couldn't be inside, then we need to give her some other things to try out. And I gave mine too and people have disagreed, I don't hold it personally. When people come on here and are looking for support that is what we should do. Rhi, I see you have only had him for a week, what other things have you tried? (i.e. comfort things?)
  22. What is so wrong about letting her boy sleep outside? If she says he can't be inside then it is her choice, maybe she is renting and she is allowed to have pets, but they have to be outside? ( this is happening more often than not!). She needs suggestions, not to be jumped upon with advice that really isn't going to help her ( except the crate thing, which she can also do outside).
  23. We have also been having trouble with Jack doing this, he is 8mths and is 24kg so he is quite big. He is good for my other half but I was copping it really bad and he did mouth my arm quite often and left bruises, I am a really quiet person and apparently my voice isn't loud enough, so at first I used one of his aluminium bowls and a stick and when he came to jump I banged the stick on the bowl which made quite a noise and he stopped, I didn't want him to get scared of his bowl so the next time I used a whistle and the same thing happened. He is pretty quick learner and has not tried to jump on me at all since this, i still carry it with me though just in case. I have tried some of the other techniques like turning my back when he went to jump, saying "ouch" or yelping but they didn't really help me.
  24. "feeling like a dummy" I find the information about how much to feed on the dry bags very confusing. I was looking at a more expensive brand of food and what it said to feed my 24kg 8mth pup was alot and I thought of the expense so I have stayed with what I started with at the moment. Do these measurements take into account what else you feed them? Or are the measurements for just feeding them dry without the extra's?
  25. I actually just use plain white vinegar, had a case of bird lice bites ( much itchier than fleas) and I put it in the fridge, so refreshing, I use it all the time now!
