  1. Hi Ll Have to confess mine are allowed to jump on the furniture and pretty much do as they please around the house but i think wehn you have a dog thast highlight is getting to work for that toy it doesn matter connor will lie there and be patted but what he really wants is to go out and trian From what youve said in the past im sure yours would be the saem yb
  2. Ok so if a dog has put a high value on something then to overcome that we need to find somehitng of higher value to keep the dogs focus on us and not the environment
  3. Ok that makes sense So you have the dog on a long line to ensure they make the right decision Ok enough hijacking better get back to the original topic I figured seeing connor has a high value on my sisters dog then i need to find something of higher value to keep his mind on me not her today we went to the beach the waves are big thing to him i can get him to work and use chasing waves as a reward but he totally ignores my sisters dog or any dog for that matter am thinking we will do a few beach trips this summer yb
  4. Yup I think i understand the concept behind it makes a lot of sense but you would need to be able to read your dog well to know when they have made the decision to comply so you could release the stim For example You want to recall dog from a good smell you turn on the stim wehn the dog starts to head toward you you release the stim but you would need to be sure he had full;y made that decision to come and not stop of for another sniff after you release the stim Would that be right
  5. similar to training horses you teach the horse to move away from pressure then when you want the horse to turn you apply pressure as soom as it turns you release thast the basic ide anyway yb
  6. Another question If your tieing the dog up and teasing the dog will be fighting against the pressure of the lead to get to the prey item but if you have a dog that has been taught well never to pull against its lead then what yb
  7. Have been thinking this over in my head this weekend I guess being involved in competitve obedience having a dog that finds the world a neutral place is a good thing it means we can concentrate on our work without extra distractions. It is definately something that would take a lot of work to produce but in the long run worth it Finding the right dogs for interactions could be hard bt i find old dogs are always a good bet most of them have no interest in young puppies connors dirst interactions with dogs were oldies they are quiet and dont play so make a good choice His biggest problem is being spooky about things but i guess that is also an age thing seven months
  8. Ok question 3minutes 3times a day seven day s aweek with dog tethered do you frustrate the dog and let him capture the prey oty now and again, never a lot
  9. seems your link leema is just an add for an e book not much actual explanation there seeings it sounds like you have read the book how about expanding n the four areas of the brain and how we can tap into them
  10. I cant answer for k9 but i do know this from experience and watching other peoples dogs that are trained using free shaping Letting a dog try to figure out what we want can be very stressful i have seen dogs get really worked up and stressed when trying to work out what their trianer wants from them i prefer to set things up so i get what i want and its easy for the dog to understand
  11. Yup thast right Ll trouble is a lot of people become clinical and think it is a replacemnet for praise and interaction yb
  12. LL i find that with people who use clicker they stop praising and expect the clicker to take over. I love using prey drive because i love the reaction i get from the dog and from people watching the dog work they are always amazed at how up the dog is. now im off to tease the dog with his toy again yb
  13. Lol Boys and their toys and hes good at playing with his ok so im going to start the prey drive prgram again so three times a day for three minutes
  14. I agree Ll I know my gsp who had very high drive had been a pain for several previous owners becasue they didnt channel it when i got her she soon learnt that to satisfy her drive she needed to do what i asked she was such an easy dog to trqain because she wanted what i had and knew there was one way to get it the more you with held it the harder shed work for it. yb
  15. Ok so now i have something to work with thanks for that a lot of what your saying has been floating aroun inside my head for ages should i do this i definately shouldnt have done that now its making sense i can see where i have gone wrong and why things happen
  16. Ok am just putting this to memory so all first interactions need to be netruel meeting boring dogs that show no interest boring people etc for how long? Once a value has been given you cant take it back so my pup has a high value on my sisters pup cant change that but can teach him to ignore her throguh obedience and reward for focuss on me he hasnt the same value with other dogs as he hasnt been alloed to play with them so if i was doing it over and using this prgram would i have to find lots of dogs of different types that will ignore him so he values all dogs as zero
  17. Yup ok so you have gotten the dog away from the distraction and move on unfortunately you cant always set up the environment in a perfect way as we have discussed in other threads loose dogs inconsiderate owners etc. This situation was my fault and have slapped my self for letting it happen I try to be proactive and set things up the way i want them to work just the rest of the local population dont see things my way lolIn this situation it is the first time i have had my dog do this i can exactly where i went wrong and will now begin to fix the problem before it becomes an issue.
  18. Just to add this is what i did to build his prey drive i started with him on a tie out at hoome teasing him with the toy and letting him get it now and again i only did it twice a aday but at the end of a week he was desperate for the toy and would really grab at it as ssoon as it was produced. then i got rid of the tie out and did as you say teased him with the toy and over the next few weeks started asking for things to get the toy as a reward he will fetch and tug with the toy. In the meantime i was using food to teach things and when out i was using food only to work on stuff as he had no desire to play with a toy we have been working on this for a couple of months now and i still cant get him in prey drive anywhere but home so im missing something
  19. lol like the tv idea but if its a nature documentary he might get more ideas. So you think this is a noraml phase and just not allowing him to interact with her will settle him down nah i dont think its a rank thing he usually very respectful of what want him to do this has happened kinda suddenly and i figured hormone surge thats what it seems to be and not having undexed male dogs before i just need to hear it from someone else . Ok we have the no toy at home thing have done that from early on. we have great prey drive at home he will do anyhitng to get his toy but once out he switches of it so do i tether him and tease him with it out the front till im getting a response as we did at home in the back yard or should i make him work harder to win the toy at home maybe that will make it more desirable
  20. yes im tempted to get one just to keep epople awy from me and my dog they seem to think if you own a cute fluffy dog its ok to let your dog harrass it lol yb
  21. So when we are talking neutralisation we need to think in tearms of reward for ignoring the surroundings ok so if the dog is totally focussed on something and we cant get there focus back to us what do i do wait tit out jump up and down until the dog realises i exist or hit myself on the head for putting the dog into a situation he wasnt ready for yb
  22. Ok i stuffed up and need help SEX drive is a powerful distraction my male entire sheltie has hit sevn months and has suddenly become a sex machine i had noticed a chenge in him in the last couple of weeks not as playful seemed quiet put it down to the weather took him to my sisters to play with the one dog he is allowed to play with all he wanted to do was hump diddy hump. Well today we went to the park me armed with ideas of working him a distance from her shebeing a distraction well he was on a long line but do you think i could even get him to lok at a piece of food and as i said in the other thread we are still building prey drive at home he was so focussed on her all he wanted was to get to her my sister not realising this came within reach he hit the end of the long line grabbed her and hunp diddy hump so i took him away decided to leave it too hard basket and we did our walk . Now i havent taken him out with other dogs to know if he has generalised any behaviour i dont want a hanit forming he is banned from seeing her till i have this sorted is this just a passing phase that boys go through or could it become an issue Also in the other thread i explained why i want good prey drive to get animation and speed on trial work so what should i do to get the prey drive wehn out of the house should i restrict access to any other form of drive satisfaction till the prey drive is stronger no food trianing for the time being was thinking of getting him a toy for humping then using that as a prey toy as well double bonus lol seriously what do i do now
