  1. I dont know how good it i but I know the WEA runs a grooming course that is to help with home grooming. Its not aimed at people wanting to be proffessionals but it could be something to look into. As a groomer I have to say that unless you actaully have a go you will have NO idea how pysically taxing it is on your body. One client of mine recently tried and it took her 6 hrs to get 3/4 of one of her dogs done. Then I had to fix what she had done. She never realised how HARD it is to groom a dog let alone at home without proffessional grade equipment and a dog will usually be worse for their owner than a groomer. Call the WEA and give it a go. Just let your groomer know that you are giving it a go because you need to save some money but if you cant do it will they still be happy to groom your dogs again? :D
  2. My goldie does it all the time. never scoots or licks his bum. He mgiht be in the car on his bed, the carpet walking and them you smell the rotten fish and yiu know its his anal glads. its actually a good thing cause it means he'll never get impacted anal glands or any other problems!
  3. It comes down to vaccinated or not your dog has the same rist as any other of contracting kennel cough. From your local park to your best friends dog. I dont think that it even makes syptoms better either... A 4 year old poodle client of mine cancelled her appointment last week bacuse they got kennel cough down the beach house with all the other dogs and she on anitbiotics cause its really bad. She is vaccinated regularily. I have a 4year old goldie and a 3 and a half year old standard poodle that have never been vaccinated and they are in my grooming salon wiht me everyday and have never had kennel cough. INHO from my own experince dont do it... kennel cough cant kill your dog its like a flu and they are at asmuch risk if they are or arent vaccinated. if you need to board your dog then get it done because you have to but otherwise there is no point.
  4. he misses his kenzie too... you'll have to pop in soon and see us! he turned 4 on the weekend.. not a baby anymore! lol And Becks thats for finding the link. Thats us on Facebook.

  8. as a grooming salon owner and as the head groomer with multiple staff I would never (and have never) hire someone with no experience in a salon to learn grooming( clipping and styling) Everyone that I hire starts in the washroom. Learning basic correct Washing, drying, brushing. Without those 3 fundamental things you cant be a good groomer in my opinion. As much as I get asked for grooming training almost daily by girls that think they want to play with dogs and make them pretty most people dont realise just how had physically and mentally demanding it is... Most salon operators that I know are the same and wouldnt hire someone with no experince with the basics in a salon environmnent to learn clipping and styling.... I think you just have to go into salons and ask if they need a lackie to do odd jobs around the shop or a washer possition they could offer you would ahve more luck... If you can prove that you can stick to it doing the really grubby work then I imagine a groomer would teach you their craft. Hope it all goes well for you
  9. We generally use a #7 for backs in winter or some people like a #5 (I hate it personally) and mostly we do #10 in summer but we do have multiple ones who have #15 who love it! coats are fine and havent grown back badly and they have had that done for years. I think the pic ofhim looks sleek. As far as groins we use a #10 or #15 whichever is most needed. on a last note... thats one hell of a handsome schnauzer
  10. Westie Girl... Im wiht the others on ehre... I started grooming from an animal health course. I went for 2 weeks work exp. in the salon that I now own and the boss kept me on. I worked as a washer, dryer, brusher for a year fulltime then started grooming training. As someone said on ehre I "had it" and could do complicated breed clips better than the manager who had been showing and grooming for 10 years. I had the benefit of training under 4 differnent people at one time which was grea to gert all their tips and withting 2 years of grooming the m amanger left, i was promoted and within 4 months of that she retired and sold me the salon... If you do not get sufficient traing in all aspects you will either fail the business or get a really bad reputation. I woudlnt be half the groomer I am if i hadnt slogged it out as a washer for a while. That is where all the basics are for a good hair cut. Without the right washing, drying and brushing? fluffing doesnt matted how good a groomer you are you cant turn them out well.. Myself and my bestfreind who runs the salon wiht me bother groomed this way and my business consistently grooms 20 dogs on a normal day and 30or more on my 2 busiest days where Ive taken on another groomer. I run 2 washers and myself and my best friend in the styling room. then on the big days its 3 washer the two of us and a third groomer with 20 years behind her. I am sick of the amount of young girls who think it would be cute to trim and primp dogs who have NO idea. Im sick of owners comeing to me expecting to fix a cut that really needs to be taken back and re grown becasue its that badly hacked. Put it this way if you wanted to be a hairdresser you couldnt just open up a hairdressers and receive clients could you? Dog grooming SHOULD be no different. The dog cant tell you what its owner wants(hell most owner dont knto what they want) and dog cant tell you that your holding its leg at a bad angle and your hurting it, a dog doesnt jsut squirm if they dont like it they BITE and scratch and meanwhile you have to keep your cool and not blow your stack at the dog because its "irratioanl". Dog grooming is so much more involved that hair dressing yet any tom, dick or harry who doesnt have a clue can open up one. get a job and a Good, Reputable salon for a could of years. Ask for a job just sweeping floors and watching then start washing and drying and then approach about stlying training. Its the only way to know that you could make it in the industry. ANd god knows with the amount if inexperienced hacks out there the industry needs more good groomers. I wish you luck.. its a hell of a lot of hard work and very waring on your body but gor I couldnt imagine doing anythign else anymore I love it so much.
  11. thanks everyone for the replies and recipies. No SAS I ahve had you to the vet... for a couple of reason... Its not bad enough to affect her quality of life now that iver changed her food and becasue before i was able to eliminate the possibility of a contact allergy. she runs around outside... i have wondering dew and ivy that she doesnt play in but may walk through and on these specifica occations nothering triggers the itchies, even rolling in the grass and dirt doesnt do anything. at my mums house same thing, park same thing, the only thing that accelorated the problem was changin her food or certain "treats" like beef in her normal food things like that... She is also very fearful and to have anyhting like blood tests or skin scrapings done would have to me full sedated. not twilight sedation but full sedation and she gets very sick from that so I need to avoid vet interaction with her as much as possible... I wont however let it affect her life before I make that choice. I just want to do what I can first. As a groomer ive also looked at the shampoo side of things and have found that an oatmeal bath every 10 days does a nice job at soothing the skin too. plus she likes being a clean princess... before all this i woujld only bath her once a month and in a very high quallity shampoo that we use at the shop. heres hoping the food works!
  12. welll...... since my first post Ive been boiling rice, veg and chicken mince. Then apon serving mixing in an egg shell and all or sardines.... And shes already not itching.. I sent off for a sample of the artimus maximal dog and my non food oriented poodle scoffed it down. She has never been a fan of kibble and will turn her nose up at any kibble even new stuff... she was nibbling the botom of the enpty packet and wen I gave her the normal boiled up stuff she walked off and went over to the little sample bag or artimus I had left... Im going to get in contact about seeing if they would like a rep in adelaide in the future. Need to keep a couple of kilos and see how she goes on it... I cant believe how fast her itching has reduced considering its only second week... might get some of the normal artimus for my goldie too since it so nice.. cant wait to see.
  13. I took her off it because she got too old.. have a hang up on feeding adult dogs puppy food after a certain age.. Ive had clients dogs with kidny problems from being fed puppy food too long... Ill try the salmon and see... it cant help.. Im just at a loss... thought if I cooked it all at home it might be best but I dont know... mgiht ahve to finish reading through all the threads on here.. :S
  14. she was raised on proplan then I put her on royal canin and she lost weight badly on that and I had a dog staying with me that ate optimum tinned and my girl would nick it while the other ate her food and she gain condition. It has been since the optimum that the skins got real bad. not only is it the first time she been on supermarket food but its also tinned so i know it probably that. its the only thing that co-encideds with it. She didnt get any skin complaints till she went off proplan pupy and onto royal canin adult and its gone down hill since then. I know that the optimum isnt good but its the only thing shes been able to put weight on and keep on for more than 2 days...
  15. Ive had problems with Isabella skin for about 18months. Shes a red standard poodle. She would just be a bit itchy now and then. nothing major but it got worse recently... over the last 6 months its bothering her now. before I would use oatmeal shampoo and that was enough, ive gone onto malaseb now and its not helping.. its a non localised itch but she chewing herself in a couple of spots now... ive changed everything accept her food so now its the foods turn... I am looking for some good websites with good recepies.. shes a fussy mole and only eats meaty food but I cant feed her barf ( as much as I would like to. she wont eat raw veg, doesnt really like chewing bones *rolls eyes* and gets the runs from higher levels of red meat) And none of this is because of me. Im a strict owner and my goldie is great on barf, kibble, raw veg, salad even just a really receptive dog to food. Isabella will eat kibble fine but I think its the preservatives in it... Just need some good recepies. Thanks in advance!
  16. there are 2 other options... scissor it out from infront of the eyes... or a dilutedsolution of lemon juice and water carefully applied with a cotton tip.. The lemons acidity will slowly remove the stain. But really like someone else said at 12yrs old and with the little staining your bichon has I wouldnt worry too much... Just try trimming the fur away and that will cause less irritation and less fluid. Hes very cute!
  17. I stayed in a place called baileys beach house http://www.jpmsa.com.au/ Its in Goowla in SA built safe as houses... completely dog frindly to the point of bowls and treats provided!!! close to the beach bout 5 kms. Cheep too. can sleep up to 10/11 people in beds not includding floor space you cna use... I had a birthday party and had all guests stay with their dogs was lovely. cant recomend these guys enough!!!!!!
  18. the best place you can go to is somewhere that you can hydrobath him yourself if u want to do it quickly after getting him... rather than risk a 8wk old retriever angel at a salon where there is a chance (no matter how clean the shop) that it could get parvo or something... My shop is spotless but I woudlnt risk a clients dog... my own were in at a young age (b4 full vaccs). Congrats in advance. cant wait to see pics.
  19. The earlier they get use to it the better really. I guess it should aslo be asked what breed of dog it is. Really tiny puppys we wash in a hydrobath but with a hand help hose so they get the idea but not the high pressure hose. Both my dogs a goldie and std poodle were washed in the hydrobath with the hydrobath hose at 8 weeks for the goldie and 10 weeks for the poodle (the ages I got them). At my salon Ive had no trouble washing puppies in the hydrobath... We only groom dogs past full vaccination though so most are 12 weeks. We have had 10 week old poodle pups before. The woner was happy taking the risk of them not being fully faccinated becasue the hair was irritating the eyes and she wanted their faces and feet done.
  20. My dogs come to work with me... everyday no matte what which is intreesting becasue Isabella the std poodle is really shy and doesnt like half my staff and they dont want to upset her so they cant come near my work station... Luckily Im a dog groomer and own my own salon or I would ahve need a very understanding boss... My husband quite regularily gets booted off the sofa because my two want to site next to me in line with the air con in summer or snuggle with me in winter which is interesting when your a 30sometihng kg golden retriever and a nearly 20kg leggy std poodle. Thats why we spent $7000 on a 3, 2 and single seater leather lounge suite with an ottoman. Becaue when my mum comes over with her min poo she MUST have her ottoman lol. The 3 seater is for me and the dogs and the 2 seater is for my hubby and the dogs blankets. We nearly didnt make it to our honeymoon 3 years ago because i was having panic attacks about leaving Rico the goldie for the first time... we got to melbourne and started hiring a car to drive back when I got a call from my best friend who was looking after him saying he was having a wonderful time and so we kept going and didnt come home. every couple of hours I rang my friend though and made her text me pics so I could see him. In his 3 and a half years 7 days is the longest ive been away from him... I wont go away form more that a weekend (providing that my mum or my bestie can babysit) because I worry about them so much. Ive switched vet clinics 4 times till this one becasue the dogs didnt like the other vets and now they like this place. we have had their beds made to fit the area perfectly where they sleep everynight so they maximum room and they sleep in the bedroom. on nicer fabric that I do lol. i spent $70p/month on medication for nealr 2 years on my poodle to help her anxiety and $60p/session with a dog trainer for her for 12 months. adding up to around $4800. and Id do it again! Oh and my dogs dont go outside in the yard unless supervised (which is fine casue I love sitting in the yard) becasue of lots of bees and wasps in my area im scared they will eat one and die cause they eat flies lol plus one of my side gates isnt totally lockable and I alwasy worry someone will open it and let them out lol. Not quiet as extreme to some people but still to my friends im a nutter.
  21. the andis agc are heavier and run hotter but they are very nice... I use the wahl km 2 only ever on high speed as I find it gives a smoother finish. All my girls at my shop use the wahl km 2. I had a pair of single speed and just found it was slower going to get a nice finish. The other things about the andis is they are heavier too. ANd my westie clients vary anyhting for a #3 to a #7. The average is a #5. The #10 would be handy to clip the belly/ groin and armpit area though.
  22. Hey Sezy, It was something I asked the surgery but getting him there was the problem, the clinic doesnt open until the same time I have to open my salon. Luckily though I live out the back of my shop so I was able to go and check on him a lot. If it had got really bad I woulda have just walked out of my shop but he wasnt distressed. Just coughing.
  23. well it turned out to be kennel cough... Rico is nearly over it on anti inflams for his throat and some cough mixture but its now hit my Isabella. Its got a bit worse over ngiht and Im taking her to the vet in a few mins to get her on antibiotics... Its gone to her lungs and she constantly coughing up fluid and cant breath properly. think pneunomia is setting in. Her temp has dropped a bit and crt are still good but shes getting dehydrated. Poor love. we have an awesome vet though. Oakway, trust me if that had been an option I would have done so but my husband was at work all day as was my mum with me at our shop and neither of us could have got out with him. I have no other family that could have taken him and the only mate of mine who would do it for me cant control 36kg of retriever.
  24. i havent been able to get himto a vet today... Im still at my shop and the only appt they had was fpor at 8.30 which is when I open my salon... The earliest ive been able to get him in is tomorrow at 11 am. Have rung the vet to see if they can give me some advice about to minimising risk tongiht till then. He is trying to clear his throat a bit but not much more than last night. dont want to go to an after hr clinic with vets I dont tryust either... Grrr damn dog getting a problem on the one day I can rush off to the vet!
