  1. Oh Wow! I would have loved to go and see them. What a big trip. I bet they are enjoying a soft warm bed and a good meal tonight! :)
  2. Our lab puppies were $500 in the 90's. I bought my GR in 2007 and he was $1200 as a show quality pup on the MR. Mum and I just had a conversation the other day about price increases, she paid $1000 dollars for a 2 acre block in the Adelaide Hills just before I was born and was filling up her Morris Minor for $2. (7cents a gallon I think...) It is all relative.
  3. Thanks, a very interesting link. I didn't realise Griffons had their ears docked in the US, what a shame, they have such gorgeous little ears
  4. I would be very concerned that puppy does not look like a healthy, normal, well bred Golden Retriever. I agree with others that he loom suspiciously like a x breed. Surely no breeder worth their salt would rehome such a puppy unless it was via prior arrangement and all health concerns had been diagnosed and addressed. That pup does not even look normal and healthy for a 3 week old, let alone 9 weeks! Take the pup back, and get your money back and contact some of the great breeders we have on here about getting another pup sometime in the future. I feel if you keep this puppy, you are in for a lot of heartache and LOTS of vet bills.
  5. This is a very interesting topic, my aim when introducing a new pup or dog here is to make them part of our family. For us that means good manners, flexible routines, calm inside behaviour, non reactive behaviour to idiot neighbours, calm behaviour in the car, ability to be separated from not just us, but each other without stress, flexibility in sleeping arrangements (if it is hot they are outside, raining=inside, sometimes crated, sometimes in the laundry etc...) accepting visiting family members and visiting dogs/cats coming and going... the list goes on. We try to manage all this with as little excitement and stress as possible. Pups are just expected to fit in with what we already do here. LizT, you are exactly right, having just had my second baby, I find people assume I know what I am doing now also, there is less pressure this time and the BIG difference, less people offering their opinions on how I should raise my child. I think there is definitely an information overload these days, it is so easy to google or search a forum and get a thousand different opinions on what you should/shouldn't be doing, where as 10 years ago we were working it out ourselves, contacting our breeders, or others in the same breed or sport for their opinions. I think we need to take a step back and ask ourselves what we want from our dogs and find the simplest path to that objective rather than over analysing and over complicating things.
  6. Very interesting to see which breeds people like Toys 1. Chinese Crested 2. Griffon Bruxellois 3. CKCS Terriers 1. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier 2. Norfolk Terrier 3. Scottish Terrier Gundogs 1. Golden Retriever 2. Gordon Setter 3. Cocker Spaniel Hounds 1. Borzoi 2. Saluki 3. Irish Wolfhound Working 1. Maremma Sheepdog 2. Briard 3. Border Collie Utility 1. Leonberger 2. 7. Usually once a week here, but for some reason Gypsie has taken to pooping on the driveway so it is fairly obvious and annoying, I usually pick those up as soon as I notice. We are on nearly an acre and the boys go in discrete places (in the bushes as they are bashful :D ) so it isn't too bad. Jules we also have something that eats up poo quite quickly, that is very handy! LOL
  8. Ha ha cool! Mine just comes back smelling like wombat poop.
  9. Bugflufky lol that's good! I've been putting sway's site to good use and cross checking as much as I can for my top 5 and also googling 'bugflufky kennels' etc... I can see why the approval takes so long- there are a heck of a lot of names out there!
  10. I'm hoping so OSS, that would be good. Is there any point in me including a letter to acknowledge the fact that it has been used as a stud name for horses by my family but is no longer used? And that my family are aware I'm applying for a prefix in that name? Or will it just get ditched? :D I don't mind that SK. that might be a good idea so if I don't get 'the one' I will still have it in some sense. I must find out how grandma and grandpa came up with it. Pity I can't ask them
  11. Thanks huga, I have googled and the only thing that comes up is an Arab horse studbook listing for a horse that my grandparents bred. I'm hoping that's not enough to get it rejected. We will see I guess, I'm sending it off today!
  12. Yes that's right Ruby! Thanks everyone yes Ginger's mum it is an aboriginal word I think I might put it down as it is as my first choice. Ruby Blue I think you are right there are plenty of names I can come up with even with an 11 letter prefix. Wiskedaway, I've been conscious of that, a couple of their horses still come up in a studbook listing so it might get denied because of that. Is it worth putting down 2 different spellings or not?
  13. If you saw it spelt like that Shell how would you say it? I want it to be pronounced worra-tinnah. Warratina Waratinna Warratinah I want to avoid people thinking it is a 'teena' sound at the end. If that makes sense?
  14. Thanks guys. Mim, my neices name is summer I do like that idea. See - after all the thinking I did I never came up with that! Pays to ask for ideas Becks I have been leaning towards using it. I know a few people with 10 letters so it shouldn't be that bad. Leema I have been thinking that. The stud name is Warratinnah. If anyone steals it I will cry but there is plenty of room to re-work it.
  15. I have finally decided to apply for my prefix! I completed the prefix exam ages ago, but have been researching and deciding on my 5 choices. I basically live on prefix.com.au (thanks Sway) trying to come up with something meaningful and somewhat original. I only have 3 maybe 4 choices at the moment so I would like some help from you lovely DOLers please :D Here is some background info: Prefix will be for Golden Retrievers, I do not like prefixes with the breed name in them (at least not in English), I live on a mountain but couldn't come up with anything to do with that (nothing that hasn't been done to death anyway), where we live is important to us, we have Latvian heritage so would like to include that somehow, and I like prefixes that are easy to read and pronounce rather than 'interesting' spelling. Some words which I have been playing around with: Five Hill Mountain Fog Mist Wood Fern Lake Water Nook Dell King But I am open to suggestions! I have also considered using the name of my grandparents horse stud, but at 11 characters maybe it is too long? (It would be a lovely legacy since both of them have passed on and no one in the family has carried on the name) Anyway thanks for reading! I hope to get some wonderful suggestions! JB
  16. Our old 'family dog' Maddie now lives with us. She is a malt x shih tzu and has just turned 17. She has her moments, we can't let her outside when it is dark as she wanders off and can't see to find her way back. She is a little deaf, but seems to be able to hear the treat jar open just fine! ;) We joke that she has got a new lease on life since being here and enjoying the fresh country air. She out did our Cav Gypsie (who is 7) when we went camping, Maddie ran the whole time
  17. I saw that add too very sad for those poor dogs and their breeders.
  18. What a beautiful tribute. I didn't know her story, it is beautiful and her legacy will live on through all those she helped you save. Rest well Cordelia, beautiful girl. Hugs to you and your family. xxxxxx
  19. Congratulations Rebane and Fern! What a beautiful litter!
  20. Oh cool I'm going to chirnside tomorrow I hope I see them! I was distracted from the story by their unusual outfits
  21. You could PM some of the breeders on here, just pop into the Goldie thread and say hi! There are lots of puppy pics too! ;)
  22. I would be annoyed too. My view is that either she has injured herself somehow, or she was injured while playing with another dog, either way the point is that it wasn't noticed or reported to you by the staff. Not good enough. Call and talk to the owner/manager and ask if anything was noticed, and if so why didn't the weekend staff let you know?
  23. Great - another place for idiots to buy unregistered, unvaccinated, non health tested, BYB bred animals Poor animals ETA - not desexed either no doubt...
  24. BIG Congratulations to Margie and Llewis! A well deserved win, lots of hard work has certainly paid off! Well done to all the other winners too!
