  1. How long does she bark for?

If it's only a couple of minutes then she settles down and sleeps (or is quiet anyway ) through the night, then it's a totally different situation to her barking non-stop all night.

well, the other night it was from about midnight till 3am. lol if it was only a couple of minutes i'm sure my neighbours wouldn't have an issue they're very reasonable people.

  2. I am not in favour of leaving no bark collars on an unattended dog like that .. what if she gets frightened/hurt? She will bark/cry, and then get an aversive :(

this is part of my reason of not wanting to use a no bark collar. Given that the issue is when she is unattended and I can't watch her it concerns me that something might happen to her and she wouldn't be able to alert us. Maybe I need to try and convince my husband crate training is the way to go. lol

  3. Would your husband compromise and let her sleep in a crate inside?

Apart from that I can only think of a few options:

    - ignore her (obviously not good for neighbourly relations)

    - put an anti bark collar on overnight

Does she bark at passing wildlife eg possums or is she just barking to come inside?

If she is barking at wildlife/ other animals/ noises then you could try crating her outside so maybe she won't be as stimulated to bark?

She is barking to come inside, my husband has already said that he would much prefer she not sleep inside at al, otherwise i'd just let her sleep in the bathroom - (this is what we do on nights where the weather is particularly horrendous). If we were to use an anti-bark collar overnight what sort would be most appropriate? i've seen muzzles, spray ones and shock ones.

  4. I was hoping someone could give me some training tips on some issues im having with our 5 month old Curly-Coated Retriever puppy. She is fine during the day, I take my kids to go outside and we play, she has had basic obedienc training which we've been continuing with. I take her for a 40 minute walk of an evening and then she comes inside until my husband and I go to bed which is when we put her outside - this is when the barking starts! I know she wants to come and sleep inside but my husband really doesn't want to let her sleep indoors. Anyway, its been going on for 2-3 months now and our neighbours are getting really pissed off (understandably so!) and of course its really quite frustrating for us too! I don't like the idea of anti-barking collars and muzzles so I was hoping there would be other options for us!

    Thanks in advance!

  5. How can she be a research fellow and a phd candidate? Surely you should already have a phd to get a research fellowship?

Anyway, sandgrubber this seems to be an independent popular article by someone who just happens to be a student in the field, not a professional scholarly work representing Monash

I stand corrected. Looks like The Conversation . . . which published the article . . . is independent academic something-or-other, started through support from Founding Partners: ANU, Monash, Melbourne, UTS, UWA, plus CSIRO. Still looks like the bar has been set low for PhD research.

There is no such "bar" that is set regarding a research question. Rather, researchers, Phd candidate or otherwise, usually only have to illustrate a gap in the current literature for their topic to add relevance to the current body of knowledge.

Exactly... I mean, my husband is doing his PhD on the lone ranger... seriously!

  6. A discussion came up at work today that I thought was interesting. It was along the lines of "why are pit bulls recorded in dog attacks more than bull terriers?" The question was, since they have a similar background as a fighting breed originally why isn't there more bull terrier bites? The general guessed answer was in identification. Bull terriers are a very distinctive breed and people recognise them (even if they get their name wrong!) where as, as it has been discussed elsewhere, that a lot of "pit bulls" are crosses or just bullish breed looking dogs that are identified as pits?

I was interested in other peoples opinions? Was the answer we came up with on the right track? Obviously I dont know enough about the breeds or the stats on biting but I know some people here do. It is just a genuine curious question and I hope it doesn't bring out the usual stomp fights that these topics can sometimes create. Do people have any opinions or answers?

I agree, there are lot of crosses, and bullish looking breeds that are identified as pits. It just goes to show how uneducated the general public is. Sure i'm not highly knowledgable on dog breeds but i'm also not naive enough to call every bully looking dog I see a pitbull. Even some pedigree dogs are often mistaken by members of the general public as pitbulls.

here is a good example of what people often mistake as pitbulls.

  7. Hi all, just wanted to post this as I was absolutely stunned when I heard this... we picked up our newf puppy almost 2 weeks ago and yesterday dropped in to visit the breeder, she sent one of my pups litter sibling interstate on Monday and by Tuesday the new owner (after having the pup for 12 hours) was on the phone to her and is sending the pup back because she can't deal with the pups crying!!!! Anybody else as stunned as me!!!

i guess some people aren't prepared for the emotional tug of the crying; especially first timer puppy owners. And i guess you can't totally prepare for something you've not experienced previously. Not the best situation for the puppy but hopefully the breeders can convince them that the crying doesn't last forever and there are some strategies that owners can employ to minimise it. I'm prepared for Wilbur's crying so I'm not worried too much; he's not our first pup. If necessary he can sleep with us in our bed if he still makes a big fuss in his crate next to my bed...OH keeps rolling his eyes when i mention this  but Wilbur's emotional wellbeing is my priority.

I always hated hearing my non fur-babies cry...can't send them back to the breeder though

lol you sound like me though my OH has already pretty much said 'no dog in the bedroom' lol, I think hes worried we'll end up sharing our bed with the dog as well as our non-fur babies.

  8. Hi everybody, I've read all the way through this thread - 3 days worth of reading. Your puppies are all so cute :cheer:

I am looking for a GSD puppy right now. :happydance2: I've been in contact with a breeder and she could give me the runt of her current litter for cheap but she wants me to keep him entire and I'm not sure I could handle an entire dog as it'll be my first and there are a lot of irresponsible dog owners around here; if he got out - which he could if he really tried - then it could be a disaster. Otherwise I'll be waiting for a few months until a puppy over East is ready to fly over. When they finish uploading I'll upload some pics of the puppies I went to see last month - didn't work out but they're still gorgeous!

Why does she want you to keep him entire? That seems really irresponsible of the breeder if your only planning on keeping him for a pet. Coupled with the fact he is your first dog I find that really quite odd. Hope you find a suitable puppy soon :D

  9. Soo, today we have one more sleep :)

I made sure I got a good sleep last night (with the help of a rest aid over the counter heehee)as Im anticipating a few sleepness nights. All good, though, I think the work we put in during the early days will stand us good in the future. :)

How are you guys going to do the inrodcutions to your older dogs? Fly is very friendly and placid but can be a bit flighty without his walk, so Im going to take him for a long walk in the morning before I go get pup.

Im going at 9 am now straight after I take the boys to school  She is only 10 mins from me

I think Ive got everything, crate, food, toys, food, bed, books, clickers, and the breeder is giving me collars, leads, 2 weeks food,2 bowls with her kennel name on:)toys, and a blankie out of the mothers bed. I think she is a star

Tonight Im going to read over the info again about the early days, and intial training etc. Im going to practice NILIF and ToT from day 1.Nothing too heavy just basics

ETA Im actually still not 100% on her name yet either :o

Choices so far. Nell. Ascha. Ruby. Narla  Ill add a pic, what do you guys think she would suit more?

    post-17377-0-63845100-1313030556_thumb.jpg

    two sleeps for me.

I don't have the issue of introducing to other dogs as we currently dont have a dog. I like the name Ruby and Ascha.

  10. Lucky u guys!! It will still be 3 weeks for me from saturday. Im just making the most of masons alone time with me, not looking forward to taking puppy toilet at night :(

aw 3 weeks will be here in no time at all! Yea, im wondering how toileting at night is going to work logistically around here. I'm still breastfeeding my 15 month old son throughout the night. I'll have three toddlers (inc puppy) in the house come Saturday!

  11. Oh he's soooo cute!!

Well, the breeder we are getting our curly coated retriever off sent us a photo! Here our girl Harley Quinn is at seven weeks :)
