I know there were a few WAers interested in trying the tracking when it started up again and have just read that there is an intro day in Gosnells at the end of March, anyone going? I'm thinking of going along and finding out more about it.
Thanks for the heads up ozjen
I've checked out the link... sounds interesting. I'll have to think about which dog to take

I think all these events must be portents. Get right with God. The world is coming to an end!
Were you at my front door this morning with some "literature"
-
Wow - talk about buy one get one free :D
Best of luck with both your new additions

2 dogs - outer 'burbs. Soon to be semi-rural/country (still 2 dogs though )

That's good..... unless you want to take a horse to Hillarys! I imagine the horse people will be annoyed.
I guess there are alot less horse owners than dog owners who are rate payers (ie. voters)

Kitesurfers banned to make way for dogs
BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian
February 18, 2010, 5:47 am
Kite surfers will be confined to two beach zones and excluded from swimming areas to make way for an extended dog beach under a proposal covering 17km of coast from Marmion to Burns Beach.
Designed to address longstanding issues over conflicting recreational activities at popular beaches such as Hillarys, Sorrento and Mullaloo, the City of Joondalup draft beach management plan would also ban horses and proposes a 50m buffer between some beach activities.
Under the wide-ranging plan, two kite surfing launching and landing zones would be established along a 345m stretch of coast at North Mullaloo and 355m around Pinnaroo Point. In turn, kite surfing would be banned 475m north and south and 250m west of the Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club and 470m north, 480m south and 250m west of the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club to protect swimmers.
The city has flagged three options for extending the 650m Hillarys dog beach by between 160m and 1.16km - in all cases abolishing the horse beach exercise area.
Jet skiers would be banned within 200m of the low water mark along the city's coastline and from the designated waterskiing area, which runs from Whitfords to Ocean Reef.
Kite surfers and surf lifesaving clubs have welcomed the kite surfing zones but horse owners and trainers have criticised the plan.
Joondalup mayor Troy Pickard said yesterday that the system was not about excluding people and penalties but gave priority to users of designated activities.
He said the horse exercise area was no longer appropriate in an urban setting.
Mr Pickard said owners of 21,000 registered dogs were calling for a bigger dog beach.
WA Racehorse Owners Association executive officer Darren McAullay said abolishing the horse exercise area would be disappointing and WA Trainers Association president Bruce Hyde said there were still enough horses to justify keeping the horse beach open.
Australian Kiteboarding School owner Darren Marshall, who operates from Pinnaroo Point, said he was happy with the proposal.
The plan was endorsed by the council on Tuesday and will be open for public comment for six weeks.

Dog attack terrorBEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian
February 17, 2010, 2:45 am
An 11-year-old northern suburbs boy has described his terror at having part of his calf ripped off during a freak dog attack near his home as his father called for all big dogs to be forced to wear a muzzle in public.
Louis Gray, a Year 7 student at Kinross College, said yesterday he had yet to start school this year after enduring two painful operations at Princess Margaret Hospital involving three skin grafts and more than 160 stitches since the December attack.
Speaking from his family's Kinross home, where he has been resting since the second operation to clean up infected parts of his leg, Louis said he was now scared when he saw a big dog.
Louis was riding home on his scooter from the local skate park when one of two dogs being walked on a leash by its female owner lashed out and bit his leg as he rode past, ripping off part of his calf.
Louis was too shocked to move but the dog owner and the driver of a passing car stopped to help and called an ambulance.
"I was heading down a hill and the dog just grabbed the back of my calf," he said. "It didn't bark or anything . . . I was in a lot of shock."
It is understood the dog, a blue heeler kelpie cross, was startled by Louis and the attack was uncharacteristic. The distressed owner voluntarily had the animal put down later that day.
Louis, whose parents are both deaf, said the dog was on a leash but he urged owners to hold dogs more tightly.
"It's just a warning to show people what dogs can do," he said.
His father Raymond was considering legal action against the dog's owners to cover medical costs. He said bigger dogs should be muzzled in public. Currently, only restricted dog breeds and individual dogs deemed dangerous have to be muzzled.
Louis said he was having physiotherapy and planned to return to school on Monday.
City of Joondalup chief executive Garry Hunt said the council was investigating the attack and had the option under the Dog Act to prosecute the owner.
He said the dog was registered and had no previous record of dangerous behaviour. The owners had co-operated with the council.

Another x-trail fan here :D
Although I am considering leasing a car when we move and was looking at the Dodge Nitro (doesn't get very good reviews ) or maybe a Nissan Navara Dual Cab with canopy :D

We went with PetPlan - mainly because of the "life coverage" and also for the Third Party Liability.
ETA. Only just signed up, so can't comment on administration / ease of claim.

Lab Rat the Emergency Vet is Murdoch University, nothing else is open in the evening in Perth and the tests they were a blood clot and urine test from a snake testing kit, very expensive I agree. Your country vet was GREAT pulling your dog through for minimal mark up Murdoch is quite different in that respect. I'm certainly going to be investigating pet insurance now.
Depends on what side of the river you are of course But pretty sure VetWest in Hillarys are open until 10.00pm weeknights, Balcatta Vet Hospital is open 24 / 7 and Ocean Keys Veterinary Hospital offers a 24hr emergency service (heard great things about this vet but not used them ).
Ordered my pet insurance on Sunday

It's already here

JoLu - regarding the ticks in WA, as far as I know down here in the south west (including Perth) ticks arent poisonous. They would be roo ticks. Living right on the edge here, we quite often encounter the little horrors. The seem to be worse at different times of the year and I think they like spring when its warm but still wet! I had a giant one scrambling around on me a few months ago - I actually ripped my shirt off to see what the hell was moving so fast over my body - GIANT tick :D :D :D . The dogs dont seem to pick them up, have seen a few on the horses over the years. I seem to be affected more than any other creature in the household! But then again all insects love me!! Mozzies, ants, ticks, even chook parasites when we had chooks!!! YUKKY...So when do you look like moving JoLu??? How exciting for you!! Jonty will love it!
Thanks for the tick info LR :D I don't want to treat if they aren't a problem so will be vigilant with grooming and keep an eye out for the blighters.
We're probably still a couple of months off moving. Will put the house up for sale in the next few weeks - fingers crossed it'll sell quickly
I think Jonty will be confused by all the trees to pee on I agree they will both love it. Saw the neighbour out with his four GSD's and they were having a grand time running around his block

Reminds me of the visit we had from the God Squad who came to convert us, but left with details of Jonty's breeder. Turned out he'd owned Rhodesian Ridgebacks before he came on his mission to WA and was having trouble finding a good registered RR breeder (only BYBers).
We were more than happy to point him in the right direction

Hi WA'ers
Just wondering what the deal is with ticks???
At the moment, I've never really worried about them as the doggies don't go anywhere off lead expect at home, but we are about to move to our property with all manner of things that crawl, jump, fly, hop and walk and I'm wondering if the doggies will need tick preventative / prevention and if so what
BTW lovely property mirawee

What is this rain you speak of
-
The closest in looks might be the shepherd - but the colour is wrong and also the breed standard says the coat is rough to touch - this coat was sillky soft.
I might have to track this dog walker down again (and take a pen and paper with me).
And a camera

Does anyone know what the "Selected Breeds" are as mentioned in the Pet Plan PDS??? I can't seem to find anything on the website listing what these are.
At the moment I'm swaying towards Pet Insurance Australia
Found this in the Pet Plan PDS in the "Definitions" section:
Select Breeds means Bandog, Boerboel, Beauceron, Bernese Mountain Dog, All
Bulldogs (i.e English, American, Australian, Miniature), Bull Arab, Deerhound, Dogue de
Bordeaux, Estrela Mountain Dog, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Leonberger, All Mastiff
Breeds, Newfoundland, Old English Sheepdog, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Rottweiler,
Shar Pei, St Bernard or any crosses of these breeds.
Thank you couldn't see for looking

Can someone put up pics of the NFS runs?
Yes, please :D :D

is it a APBT or a CC ?
APBT - this is his page: Diablo

I wish I'd seen this thread earlier. It has been stinking hot in WA - I don't remember when it was last so dry and hot - blergh
But still a long summer to go through so might have to place an order on payday on a couple of polar pads
-
Yeah I've been painfully watering it to no avail But hmm, not for an hour a day, that seems excessive! Plus we have water restrictions.
If you've had new turf laid, pretty sure you can get an exemption in certain circumstances: Water Corp. Exemptions
We gave up on the grass in our dog area, and are going with a crushed gravel instead.
By the way, what a big beautiful tree :D nice and shady to relax under

Earl is gorgeous - you are lucky KelpieHoundMum....
How are you finding him son far??? Have you had hounds before?? How does he compare to kelpies???
-
:D that's quite a tale Ms Genki
I've had one go under here (colorbond fence) but none over - yet
We would prefer something with a roof, and a floor, and a SAS trained security detail
I might try some of the rural/farm supply places near our block and see what they can offer
Taxidermy?
