  1. The prohibitive dog imports have been here just 2 yrs short of 20 yrs all ready!, yep I think its a well flop of a thing lol. just like the german shepherd prohibitions were.

So technically, there wouldn't be too many real ones left anyway?

not at all, still plenty of good breeders with great bloodines.

So back to my whole point - LEGALLY there shouldn't be any though if you take into consideration the length of time since the origianl ban and then BSL restriction on breeding and requirement to have all APBT and their crosses desexed?

I'm not so silly as to believe that restricted breeds aren't imported.

I understand that owners of APBT love their dogs but isn't blatantly flaunting the law on sale and breeding only harming the cause? And i'm pointing the finger at those who breed purely for profit by advertising overpriced pups with no guarantees and promoting their dog's fearsome reputation. Every photo that accompanies such advertisements shows chained dogs (with bloody heavy chains), and highlights the dog's prowess as a 'protector' - These 'Breeders' are the reason the breed has such a hard time promoting the attributes of the breed - rather they focus on promoting the APBT as a fearsome dog, and a cash cow, because the wankers that are breeding them attract further wankers who don't understand the dog's tenacious nature and can't handle them properly and create ill tempered poorly socialised dogs who unfortunately do attack and create more drama for the legitimate pet owners.

I don't think it can be argued unfotunately that the breed attracts undesirable types due to their history, and how they are portrayed by the media including movies and tv programs - if it's a guard dog or its barking ferociously or tring to attack somoene out the front of a criminals home - its a PB. APBT owners are fighting an uphill battle.

  2. I understand that BSL is not the answer - i'm only supporting the destruction of actual dangerous dogs who have attacked wothout provocation. BSL is bulllshit and taking things way to far, but individual dogs who have a proven incidence of attack without provocation should be destroyed.

Anyone been rushed by a stray off any breed? i'd personally shoot the bastard nyself. If it's unreg, found wandering and rushes or attacks, it doesn't have a home that cares and having already caused trouble, well fair enough. Flame me if you must but i was attacked by two wandering cattle dogs (who were in fact known menaces reg with the council in which this incident occured in northern nsw) when i was five months pregnant crossing the road to go to the bakery of all things. Bastards bit me and knocked me to the ground in a busy street - not only had i been bitten and scared half to death, a car had to brake heavily to avoid hitting me. Needless to say the dogs were destroyed that very afternoon.

Im all for a hard line on actual dangerous dogs but will always promote an indivdual case basis rather than a breed issue.

  3. :)

I'm wondering, really, how long has the Pit Bull really been banned from importation to Australia?

There is a website i regularly visit that advertises APBT pups for sale with American papers - how totally irresponsible is that? i mean, for starters aren't all APBT in Australia supposed to be desexed in accordance to legislation? and further open promotion blatantly flaunting ownership, profit from and breeding - isn't this just hurting the antiBSL cause?

If i were the owner of a APBT in this current hostile climate, i certainly wouldn't be shouting out about it. Having said that, i have previously owned APBT crosses and i hate to admit it, these dogs were less temperamentally reliable than our other dogs. All fed the same diet, all the same amount of work and attention and exercise and socialisation. (we have pig dogs). Yes they were lovely by nature but after owning three, i can say that i could never trust these dogs around strangers even in my attendence quite as much as i could our other dogs. Of course you could never fully trust any dog, after all they are creatures of there own devices, but the pitty crosses were just that little bit more sensitive.

Now i'm not saying i support BSL in any way, but it does take a firm and experienced hand to bring out the best in an APBT or a cross. And these backyard bred ones bred by yobbos to make a buck - well there's the reason the breed has a poor reputation.

There needs to be a greater effort amongst APBT nad cross owners to ensure their dogs welfare by doing something about the backyard breeding that is creating a generation of in bred, ill tempered dogs - as they would be in any breed that was backyard bred, but with the pit bulls natural tenacity and strength, is only a recipe for further accusations and damage of the breed.

APBT proved they weren't the dog for me, and i'm personally not really a fan of them but i understand the love for a dog regardless of his heritage and his place in your heart, and it pains me to see the honest people get jibbed when these suspect looking 'breeders' can blatantly flaunt their disregard for the future of the dog they profit from (cos they obviously don't care about anything else)

  4. Naawww cute pics everyone!

Amy h whats wrong with Emmys paw in that first pics? Does she have a puppy booboo?

yeah she and her brother had a very nasty fight, that's why she had to stay home from dad's trip to queensland, cos she's on antibiotics cos it got a bit manky. It's lovely having a puppy again, even if she is only visiting, it's been a year since warren was little enough to pick up and cuddle! he was the most beautiful pup, sooooooo cute!

Wow - never seen a black and tan staffy!

  6. UUUrgh! as if i haven't already had a shitty week so far!

I have been strolling of a morning with my neo (12 months old) - just to get him out of the yard, about 20 - 30 mins every second day and i think either he has picked up a piece of glass i can't see or if it's a deeper problem. It's his left foreleg, and i was watching him really closely and the toe second from left on that foot flick up when he puts his foot down. It's only noticeable when he's walking - doesn't seem to bother him when he's running. It's only slight, he still puts weight on it. I have felt the leg and foot all over and can't find a foreign object and there doesn't seem to be any pain.

His parents have pretty good hip and elbow scores, mums 0/0 and dad i think is like 0/2 or something like that - don't have paperwork in front of me.

he is going to the vet next week for it and his annuals, but i thought i might gauge what DOLers might think he's got and what costs might add up.

  7. :) Our Family dogs Lucky and Steel went to doggy heaven a week apart, 29/09 and 6/10. May my beautiful boys have long lovely sunny days resting in the sunshine forever. :D

Sadly, i didn't get to have a photo shoot with darling old Steel (b. 1995 sometime) before he was PTS due to Cancer, but he was a Lovely Lovely Pit Bull, Steel Blue with those intense greeny eyes and heart as big as a horse.

Here's a piccie of Lucky dog dog

Unfortunately i hadn't seen the boys for 2 months (they lived with mum and dad) but our last day was normal together - for Lucky a run down the river chasing Rabbits at sunset (don't worry, he was too slow to catch them!) and for steel, laying in the grass in the sunshine together having a scratch and a snooze. AHHH the good life! spoiled old bugger he was. :D

My boys, Catch ya on the flip side!

  8. I find it's better to shoot on high qual in either TIFF or RAW format to allow for future manipulation. I then save as jpg also for multiple back up and print just about every photo i take. I have an external harddrive and because RAW files can be up to 500 mb, i burn to DVD archive, and the Jpgs to cd. This may not an option on the little auto digis but on my olympus slr's it's how i shoot. It depends on how much you want to spend on your setup.

  9. Bloody spring - lovely time of the year don't get me wrong (as i sit and inhale my antihistamines and steroids for various spirngtime drips) but our poor doggies must itch to buggery - there's hair everywhere! Can anyone recommend a solution for hair removal for short haired dogs - currently i use a horse curry comb and shedding scraper (okay the horses water scraper) but the hair just keeps coming!

I have a neo and two puglets - both short haired but with very thick coats. Warren, the Neo is currently shedding his puppy coat so it's the fine fluffy stuff going everywhere and it's got to the point i don't want to put them in the car for fear of clogging the vents!

    HELP!

seriously, any suggestions greatly appreciated. I heard furminator rakes are fabulous but not sure about it yet cos my doggies have short coats. Has anyone tried them?
