  1. We loved our Puppy pre school experience...there were 8 pups, a German Shepherd 2 Labradors, a Boston Terrier, a Cocker/Beagle cross, a German Short Haired Pointer, a very small Papillon and my Maxine. The vet Nurse who ran it was wonderful....she was very much in control of what could have been a chaotic situation....big dogs went off lead with big dogs and small with small. The puppies had a ball...the owners had a ball...and we learned heaps of useful information I have never laughed so much in my life
  2. Thank you all for sharing your greater experience with me...we are back in the lounge with the pup on a short leash and leashed trips outside for the toilet It is very hard to know whether you are doing the right thing , when you haven't done it before.
  3. Hi there. Maxine was desexed on Thursday. She is six months old and 8.4 Kg. When I brought her home, I had her on a short lead inside with short trips outside on lead also. She slept overnight in her soft crate as usual. On Friday, it was pretty much the same routine. Today, she seems to be back to her boisterous self. I managed to distract her with mild "hide and seek" type games and inside on lead time but this arvo, on a usual toilet run, she went crazy zooming arond the back yard, leaping about and generally frolicking. The suture line is dry, not swollen or red (invisible sutures that dissolve) My question is that the vet advised 10 whole days of confinement and keeping her quiet and I am wondering how I can achieve this?.... Do I lock her in the lounge with me for that length of time? Should I ask for sedation for her (or me LOL)? Is the vet just being extra cautious? Help?
  4. OH thank goodness....desexing AFTER 6 months of age is ok...*sweats*
  5. Oh dear....I am planning on doing dog sports...but I am desexing my girl on 10 April...I didn't know they were mutually exclusive :D
  6. Yes Cockerlover (I love them too btw)....Maxine has a "graze" on the skin right near her vagina.....her anal glands are fine and a wee test has been taken for a micro and culture test. The vet has given me some ointment to apply so I hope that this works for her. Thank goodness Maxine is NOT on heat :D How she suffered a "graze" right there is beyond me ...though her Cocker genes have sent her burrowing into dense bushes/undergrowth on occasion...LOL
  7. Ouch Mirawee....that does sound painful ;)
  8. Maxine is a Cocker Spaniel X Bilbo Baggins, she is quite small. .
  9. Thank you Lucknow ...I do intend taking her to the vet on Monday. She had her first professional grooming (wash/dry and trim) last wednesday......I thought they routinely checked anal glands...should I have asked him if he did them/would do them?
  10. Maxine is 22 weeks old and 9kg and today I noticed a small amount of what looked like blood on her vagina. I don't think the area is swollen (?yet) and I cannot see any evidence of an injury. She seems to be licking herself a lot and also "scooting" on her bum. I was surprised about the latter as she has been dewormed and is still on a monthly program of deworming. Is it possible that she is coming on heat? She is booked in at the Vets to be desexed on the 10 April.
  11. I took Maxine (now 5 and 1/2 months) out rain hail or shine since she was 8 weeks old....so no problems with Toilet training....However...we do have a covered pergola over a garden bed...and that is where it all happens on a rainy day
  12. and keep the puppy on a lead...no playing till the job is done.
  13. Yes Vehs, I should have ..My only excuse is that I am new and you know how shy I am

    Who Me?

..That is so gorgeous...what a lovely Cocker ...Just remember..with kids and dogs.....tissues and toilet paper messes are the easiest to clean up
  15. I was there for an hour Cassie, but Maxine was only in the water for 15 mins.....then there was the walking, the running, the lying down, the shaking, the sniffing, the chasing, the jumping and the panting Thanks...I think I will go agin on saturday and see if I can take some pictures
  16. Today I took Maxine (18 week old - Cocker Spaniel Cross) to Uriarra Crossing on the Murrimbidge River for her first swim. There was no hesitation, she was into the water and with a bit of encouragement, swimming eagerly within 5 minutes We stayed for an hour...but after that, Maxine seemed to tire LOL Is swimming good exercise for a Puppy and how often should I take her?...any advice anyone?
  17. Dog Obedience School Report - Week Three :D We arrived early and approached the "off lead" park...(all fenced in)...where there were many BIG dogs romping. The owners (of the Big Dogs) spotted us and invited us in ...I was scared...Maxine was eager The owners said to take her off the lead...so I did Then there was 40 long minutes of running, romping, rolling, barking, sniffing, panting, lolling, and rollicking. Maxine did really well....she managed to play with all the dogs without getting killed or even injured..LOL I met all the big dogs too :D The owners were fantastic....they helped me look out for Maxine....but in no time all was rosy and friendly...I guess becasue all their dogs were SO VERY WELL TRAINED and happy and balanced. This is something to aspire to with Maxine...it is great to have a goal Oh and the class was great....pieces of roast lamb work just as well as the sirloin :D
  18. Thanks for that...I am learning heaps every day on this forum :D and really...it is I who is learning how to do this obedience thing every week :D
  19. I thought you always have to use treats...at least intermittently...*shrugs*
  20. Second class today....one tip that really helped....take a variety of treats...and use them in the everyday taining too...for really important skills like recall and heel....use Sirloin steak....I not only had my dog's attention...I had ALL the dogs attention
  21. I went to my first Obedience class (Kindy as my pup is 15 weeks now) today...had a great time and Maxine slept ALL day afterwards...LOL
  22. I have used a short sharp spray of water......it seems to work for me.
  23. When I put the collar on my pup....I put the lead on too....and use both inside the house.....I find it is the easiest way to suppervise the pup inside the house....Have had NO weees or poos inside at all....Ouo just has to follow and just got used to it in half a day
  24. The Vet at Puppy Pre School said that socialisation was more important than "quarantining" till final vaccination. She said that in our area (Canberra) there was very little Parvo. And that while 3 dogs have died from Parvo in the last year, 56 have been "put down" due to behavioural (sp?) problems I don't know what to think
