  1. Thanks Beth.

All of the legal stuff is probably not something the newspaper will quote. Can you, as the definitive expert, sort of put it layman's terms. I can refer the reporter to those clauses - maybe I can leave it up to him to summarise it for a newspaper friendly article. There is a fine?

I am devastated that Sarge is missing - 3rd night without him  . The other 4 are totally confused. It broke my heart doing the feed 10 minutes ago and only having 4 large bowls to hand out instead of 5.

  2. Can someone please find the actual Clause in the CAA for me. I would be so grateful as a reporter I have spoken to is very interested in doing an article and asked for the actual legal jargon. I would look but am stressed about my missing old Dobie. I want the local Liverpool paper to publicise this because I have come across many instances of people who say "oh we found a dog, and we took it home and kept it". Today, while putting up posters of my missing Sarge, I talked to a couple of people who thought it was OK to just take a stray home and keep it. My reasons are twofold, get the reporter to advise the public on their legal obligations, advise about the stress of the owners missing their dogs and to publicise my missing Dobe (since 28th April in Lurnea, Liverpool). We are pretty sure someone has him in their backyard. Not making much sense I know. Sorry.

  3. Talking about advertising Blue Healers, I had a funny image in my head when I read about Rock Wheelers For Sale, and on a separate occasion, Roddie pups!!!

People describing their rescue dogs as "devine".

Recently read someone describing themself as a "gluten for punishment". Guess spell check won't help that mistake.

The list is endless. This topic could end up running to 100 pages.

The photos are so beautiful , especially the photo of Charlie's last hours in the sun. Has started tears rolling down my cheeks again. I never met Charlie but I can see what a beautiful old boy he was. May he be at peace now, happy, contented and pain-free across the Bridge .

Sadly, almost 5 years after being rescued from the Pound at 10 years old, and after receiving so much love and and care in the last 5 years, Charlie lost his battle today ;) at home and went to the Bridge. Alix is devastated and grief-stricken, but I hope she will come here shortly to pay tribute to Charlie and post some photos of this gorgeous elderly Border Collie.

RIP old Charlie - you were very much loved. :happydance:

  6. For anyone unfortunate to have a dog with cardiomyopathy, and needing Vetmedin and Flusapex, I have 28 x 5 mg Vetmedin capsules and about 40 or so 40 mg Flusapex tablets. Sadly, I no longer require them but knowing how expensive, particularly the Vetmedin, is, I do not want to waste them but want them to go to someone who needs them. Let me know and I will post to you.

Wizard what about instead of giving such expensive meds away for free that instead you request a donation to rescue. Just a suggestion  They can either send the donation to you directly or to your rescue of choice and you send the goods when the rescue confirms they have the $$.

I'm a bit cranky today so I will add that I've seen in the buy/sell forum that some people who we know are in full time employment and have OH's who are also employed will quickly jump onto anything that's put up for free. I think these folk should be prepared to pay something for whatever is on offer and it helps rescue.

Good idea Cranky Anne. I didn't really think about asking for a donation to rescue. When I found the medicine the other day, it just brought back memories of Merlin going to the Bridge last August, so I just want it gone, and to someone who really needs it.

  8. Noble Zuri - saved from Death Row one week, then tragically gone the next week.

Last Thursday after her desexing operation, Zuri wasn't very well, and the vet kept her overnight on a drip. The vet told me on Friday morning that Zuri was fine to go back to the kennels, and Ryally who took her back to the kennels thought Zuri was also OK . Ryally put Zuri back in her pen and gave her a cuddle. 10 minutes later kennel owner, Joyce's, son went to feed Zuri, and went back to tell Joyce that Zuri did not look well at all. Joyce was busy and went down 30 minutes later to find Zuri had tragically died. She rang me at work at 11:20 on Friday - I was in tears and had to go home early. We have no idea why this happened and will never know. I have had to advise 2 people who were genuinely interested in adopting her.

  9. Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. I have only just got over all the 'firsts' that are distressing after a best mate dies. The first time I prepared dinner on Sunday night, and there was one bowl less and Merlin not there to bark at to me to hurry up; the first time I hand out Schmackos at the kitchen bench and Merlin is not lined up in his regular position along with the othes. The first night when he was no longer in his regular position beside my bed, and not there in the morning staring at me, waiting for me to get up.

All the 'firsts' and even the rest of the times make it hard to cope. I haven't been able to go to work for 2 days so tomorrow afternoon will be the 'first' time I arrive home and he is not at the garage door to greet me. He was truly my 'shadow' and even in my small house when he could see me move into another room, he had to get up and follow me. Last but not least, he was the Protector of all the foster dogs that have stayed with me over the years. Whenever Sarge got majorly pissed off with a newcomer, Merlin would warn him off very vocally. All the foster dogs (and my other 2 girls) knew that Merlin was the 'nice' one they could curl up with. I think my father, already surrounded by 6 Dobes over the Bridge, has already greeted Merlin and made him welcome.

  10. I h ope you are not mixing the pups together. Parvo is deadly for most pups and most dogs. Every second counts so I wouldn't waste any more time posting, get down to the vet.

no only have 1 pup, from hawkesbury.

my boy who is vacc, does he have to be serapated?

    Alexis

As well as the Hawkesbury pup for Boomba, I thought you collected another pup from Renbury yesterday for Boomba. Have you spoken to Boomba about this yet?

  11. Dogs and cats in renal failure are also put on Fortekor. My last dog was on it briefly. It helps with blood pressure. A friend whose dog has the same kidney problem pays $74.95 for 5mg x 28 tabs, so it's pretty expensive and she's not found it anywhere locally that is cheaper.

That is a lot cheaper than the $104 I am currently paying for 28 x 5 mg tabs.

  12. Why dont you have a chat to your vet and see if they can do a discounted cost per bottle not per tablet! And ask if they are charging a dispensing fee.

Unfortunately heart meds arent cheap, one of our clients was spending $10 a day on Vetmedin, Frusemide, Fortekor, Lanoxin.... I can tell you that Vetmedin isnt that cheap for the vet to buy, neither is the 20mg Fortekor.

Are you buying the 14 tablets in the Fortekor or are you buying the 28 pack?

Are you able to get prescription medications in from overseas without a script?

Bostongirl, Definitely heart meds are not cheap. If I was still buying the 3 meds from my vet it was $12.02 a day.

Regardless of whether I buy 14 or 28 Fortekor from my vet it makes no difference to the cost of each tablet.

Yes I am getting the Vetmedin and Flusapex from overseas without a script.

    Steve

Know nothing about Merlin's mother. He was impounded as a stray at Sutherland Shire Pound. I got him from Sutherland Pound 4 years ago when he was about 4 years old - no chip or ear tattoe. Food is usually Biox 1 biscuits for breakfast, dinner is chicken necks, , mince Hills Science Senior dry food and a large spoonful of canned casserole.

  13. Found out what these do:

    1. Fortekor: ACE inhibitor

    2. Vetmedin: Calcium channel blocker

    3. Flusaplex (Frusemide): Diuretic

They all work together to manage the heart failure. Humans use a similar mix with very good results- you can see the enlarged heart size shrink if you look at before treatment vs.after treatment (for weeks) Xrays.

Can you talk to your vet and ask if there are any cheaper, generic brands that you can substitute for brand names?

Flusaplex is a common, inexpensive medication used for people = Frusemide (brand name: Lasix).

Can the Vetmedin be substituted for a "beta blocker" (older drug, cheaper, does similar job)?

Our local vet is will sometimes suggest substitute human medications, if appropriate. This gets complicated, though, unless you work in a hospital or are a GP with lots of samples.

Thanks Poodle wrangler. Merlin is my 3rd male Dobe diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, so unfortunately I have had way too much experience with this disease and with all the various medications and what they do. The cost of the Vetmedin and Flusapex from overseas is very cheap compared to my vet, so I don't need to look at generics for those two, just looking for a Fortekor substitute. My vet was charging $1.10 per tab Flusapex and $1.44 for Vetmedin. Overseas the Flusapex is 0.14 cents and the Vetmedin 0.89 cents per tabs which is a massive difference.

The other 2 Dobes did not live beyond a month or so after diagnosis, so the Vetmedin is a God-send now, as Merlin is still going 4 months later. He is getting a bit thin, but still has a good appetite and normal energy levels.
