  1. When our local SPCA rescued a lot of in whelp bitchs from a local puppy mill I offered to foster a couple for them but was refused on the basis that I was a breeder and had other entire dogs. I can't see how that decision was for the benefit of those poor dogs which were left to whelp unattended in kennels surrounded by other dogs instead of tucked away safely in my purpose built facilities

Similar to me when I offered a home to a surrendered Sheltie. Despite having had this breed for 40+ years I was deemed not a suitable person to own one.

  2. As an owner of a bull termer x who was diagnosed with malignant histiocytic sarcoma in October 2009, I have tried to keep in touch with what is happening in the field of research for our canine companions. The type of cancer Frodo had was a very aggressive cancer and from the stories I have read most dogs are lucky if they survive a couple of months. The good news is Frodo still keeps well after treatment, Statistically speaking one in three dogs in Perth will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and it is for this reason it is important that trials and research be conducted so that advancements in future treatments can be made.

I have recently found out that the Perth Vet Specialists Oncology Department are conducting subsidised clinical trials for the following canine cancers:

    Canine lymphoma – free medication

Canine appendicular osteosarcoma – free medication

Canine non-cutaneous haemangiosarcoma – free medication

There will be additional costs to owners such as xrays, ultrasounds, bone marrow testing, blood testing, hosptalisation, or any other testing that is required during the course of treatment. The medication will be free. The data that will be collated with suitable participants in these trials will help with future advancements in the disease.

Frodo was very lucky to have Dr Ken Wyatt and his team at the Perth Vet Specialists treating him. The experience and knowledge they have is why he is still with me now. Perth is fortunate to have two of Australia's seven veterinary oncologists with Dr Amy Lane being the other. I cant speak more highly of the care he received during that dreadful period of time

If any of the forum members know of anyone who has a dog that might be a candidate for these trials please contact the Perth Vet Specialists in Osborne Park on 9204 0400

Could you please tell me where you got the statistics that one in three dogs in Perth will be affected with cancer??

  3. No one has commented on the grammar or spelling of the letter first posted...Unless someone has retyped this and has not checked it...it's appauling! This type of letter, should it be original and correct, should never be submitted for consideration to ANY major organization based simply on the lack of professionalism shown.

    Now...apart from that:

I am pro docking (and pro cropping) I have currently TWO imported dogs with docked tails, and am in the process of bringing another one....why? Not because they have short tails...but for their bloodlines. For me, it's a bonus to have a docked tail, BECAUSE I LIKE HOW IT LOOKS! AND it's true to my breeds heritage which I protect....sue me for doing this sort of thing, but to ME, it's as important as keeping IN SIZE and not having the wrong features as written in the breed standard and our historical records.

The arguement from some is that mediocre docked dogs are winning over better natural tailed ones. BLAME JUDGES...(and those that blindly follow their decisions)

May I point out Angelsun that while you criticise the spelling in the original letter, you yourself are guilty!! The correct spelling is appalling, not Apauling!!

What about the breeds that have the bobtail gene? Do we rule out a puppy for future simply because of the lack of tail by a genetic quirk? What if the dog is in fact a fine specimin for the breed....will the ban of exhibition of docked or shortened tails, evolve into a ban to use them for breeding? Give it time, and let the breeders and showies fight amongst themselves long enough, and you can be sure it will come to pass. How to police this sort of thing? Anyone remember 'Breed masters' (known by many other names around the world) who are responsible for assessing dogs in litters and deciding IF they are eligible for registration or not based on deformities or faults.

It's not about if you are pro docking or anti docking....for many of you, you say you don't care because it doesn't apply to your beloved breeed....but do you honestly feel you are safe? What if mandatory eye testing becomes a criteria for showing/breeding, and you own a Golden Retriever who has retinal folds? (considered not acceptable for breeding by N.A. eye testing standards) What about you Sharpei breeders/fanciers with pedigrees full of dogs that have had eyes tacked from as young as 4 weeks....you could be in the target next and not permitted to show or breed with a dog that has had this done.

Others argue that docking isn't the same as the above..that it's nasty, cruel and simply wrong. You have the right to say that. I also have the right to say that when I have banded tails, the pups are still wet and are nursing and make no indication of anything happening to them. They COMMUNICATE with their peers just fine thanks, compared to their full tailed friends, and I am currently in the process of waiting for genetic testing to see if my breeding dogs carry the bob tail gene.

May I point out Angelsun that while you criticise the spelling in the original letter, you yourself are guilty!! The correct spelling is appalling, not Apauling!!

For a Breeder to be able to instantly take back any dog that is in need, they most probably are going to need kennel facilities, then most likely the dog wont be sent back because as we read time and time again the owners don't want them going into a kennel situation, so they are better off going to rescue to add to the burdens there and also fueling the Breeders don't look after their own train of thought. If I was raising a litter of pups in the house underfoot, because that is "the best way" then I am no doubt then in strife with the powers that be because pups must whelped in kennels, but I also couldn't add a strange dog to the household mix because of the risks. What to do?? Breeding dogs is getting more and more like one of those crazy time management games.

Breeders and breeders that rescue should have without a doubt a quarantine area. So should be able to take back or take in a dog at anytime. Yes?

But that pre-supposes that breeders will have kennels so they can provide a quarantine area, does it not?

A quarantine area doesnt pre-suppose anything....I dont have kennels but I do have a quarantine area....albeit a cubby within a fenced run. :)

But that is a kennel, is it not?

Quarantine.... A state, period, or place of isolation in which people or animals are placed.....isolation. I give up :)

You miss the point - sometimes things change, sometimes things happen sometimes the cubby house is all full sometimes the breed is a bigger management issue ,sometimes you have run out of money to be able to feed it and vet it ,sometimes its either the rescue dog or your spouse, sometimes you are not well and you have enough on your plate . The point is ideally we would all take the dog back ,ideally we would all take responsibility but sometimes we shouldn't and we should respect each other enough to accept that each of us will make the best decisions we can at the time rather than beating the hell out of someone because they cant .

And that is one of my add-ons. If you can't take a dog back, then see you later.

You acknowledege that for you to buy a puppy from a particular breeder they must agree to take that dog back should your circumstances make it necessary and warrant it. Why then do you not give the breeder the same consideration that when and if this should arise, they may not be in a position to do so. Why would you hold them to a higher accountability than you hold yourself.

  5. I lost one of my blue merle Shelties at 18.5. He was bitten by a snake somewhere in my back yard. His heart, lungs, liver and kidneys were all still functioning 100% and he was neither blind nor deaf, but as the treatment was going to be extremely harsh on a dog of his age I chose to give him his wings. I remember it like it was yesterday even though it is a couple of years ago now.

  6. post-21904-0-09940300-1314964834_thumb.jpgI had a blue merle Sheltie who was bitten by a snake one week after his 18th birthday. His heart, lungs, liver and kidneys were all functioning at 100%,but I thought it was too much to ask him to go through the anti-venine treatment,so I gave him his wings. His father lived to 17,almost 18.
