  1. I found they worked pretty well to keep brown snakes away from the dog yard. My neighbour also put them in. Her neighbour got all the snakes for a few years, so the repellers relocated the snakes rather than driving them back into the bush.
  2. Medication can help behavioral modification work better, so don't rule it out. It is not an either/or choice, the two can work together vey well.
  3. How has she done in the show ring or in retrieving trials? Who apart from you has evaluated your bitch to determine if she is good enough to breed from? If you can give positive answers to these questions then don't desex and learn how to become a breeder. Then health test, then determine if you are able to do all the work of raising a litter before you even think about breeding. If you are not planning to be a responsible breeder, then it is easier to live with a desexed dog.
  4. Remove the rewards of counter surfing. Never ever leave any food on the counter for the dog to get. Problem solved.
  5. Highly recommend them. Very professional and caring staff.
  6. Tell visitors to completely ignore the dog. No eye contact, no friendly approaches, pretend the dog is not there. If she wants to approach them they should still ignore her. Once she has accepted the visitor's presence, they can offer a treat held out to the side, still not making eye contact. Keeping having visitors come but remove the pressure of her having to interact with them until she is ready.
  7. None. If forced to fed any one of those I'd give up my dogs and switch to cats.
  8. Love it. Cody is the friendliest, most people loving dog I've ever owned. But so many people are terrified of his looks and assume he's a killer. He worked out at about five months old that if they look scared he was unlikely to get a cuddle. Smarter and more civilised than some people we meet.
  9. Inspired by the photo of Esky sledding, I'll add Piper (Chesapeake Bay Retriever)at 8 weeks, when most people guessed she was a Vizsla At 1 year doing what she was born for
  10. My mains registered German Shepherd Dog is NOT an 'Alsatian'. I've had more than one expert proclaim that the reason he is so big is that he is an Alsatian (not a German Shepherd), or that the black and gold are German Shepherds and the sables are Alsatians. I've tried to explain Alsatian is not a breed and that they are all German Shepherds but generally fail to educate anyone.
  11. The book 'Sydney's Best Dog Parks, Walks and Places to Play' by Catherine Proctor has over 90 listings, so not keen to type them all out, but I can tell you what the book says for Western suburbs: Parramatta Lakes. Street parking at corner of Charlton Ave and Wolverton Ave , Easy 6k approx 2 hour return, lake and bush views, picnic spots. No off leash area Lake Moore. Parking at Chauvel Park off Epsom Road Easy 3k return approx 45 minutes, water views and picnic spots. No off leash area Sydney Olympic Park. Park at Sydney Olympic Park Off leash area Hill Road. 12. A trained cue to spin is ok. It has a start and a finish and the owner controls the movement. It is the dog initiated, compulsive fixation tailchasing that is the problem.
  13. "Karen Porreca is a senior director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" Enuf said.
  14. I see it as a potential obsession problem so don't let my dogs amuse themselves this way. I've seen too many dogs with problems that started out innocently enough but escalated.
  15. The catch22 is that the only reason to do these jobs is a love of animals. You don't do it for the low pay, the difficult working conditions, personal fulfillment or the opportunity to deal with the aftermath from people who think animals are disposable. You love animals but have to participate in the death of some to save others. Impossible to reconcile, difficult to accept.
  16. I used 'Zoom' as the send out. 'Go' sounds too much like no, and I had already used 'Out' for an agility go out laterally.
  17. Because they have never experienced the horror of a serial, continuous barker. I've only known one before and after debarked dog, and she is much happier dog after debarking. The stress of owning her has been relieved, and now her owners can focus on what a great dog she is.
  18. I sorry about the health problems your lovely dogs have had to go through. Veternarians can make mistakes but it's not necessarily malpractice or even bad practice. In all types of medicine, diagnsosis is part art and part science. My advice would be to cherish and love your dogs, find a new vet you can trust, and let go of the past.
  19. Does she know "drop" as a stationary exercise? I'd work on that before putting it into a heel routine. When she does drop, put the reward treat on the ground directly between her front legs. Build duration of holding a down position initially by putting down several rewards sequentially and release with a heel command before she gets up. As she gets the idea, increase the time between treats, reduce the number of treats and randomise the rewards but always deliver the reward on the ground while she is down. Once she is dropping and holding the down from a stationarary start, then try putting the moving drop into a heel pattern.
  20. Question: What health checks have been completed on the stud and the bitch, and can I see the results?
  21. I had a dog who took to attacking the fence and even jumping up. Unfortunately the German Shepherd on the neighbour's side thought this was a grand game so she started doing it too. Both could jump high enough to touch noses over a six foot fence. Neither dog was aggressive, but it was not a healthy game. I talked to my neighbour to explain the problem and suggest some solutions. We introduced the two dogs by walking them together every couple of days. At first they were eying each other with suspicion, but by the end of the second walk they were quite comfortable with each other. After the dogs became familiar with each other, the problem just went away.
  22. I remember the incredible service of free home delivery of dog food they provided when I lived nearby but was stuck at work. I also recall them phoning the Animal Welfare League Shelter when one of their freezers failed and they donated the meat if we came to get it. Really lovely people who put their all into the business. Sad about the loss of animals. Hope the business was insured.
