I know who your friend is!!! :-) Your friend also got an apology from admin today saying they were a little overzealous by deleting posts and members ( there were at least two that I know of) and were sick of being swamped with PM's saying that they (BYB's) didn't like not being free to make their comments without having to justify themselves. I guess they thought the 'easy way around it' was to gag the questioners to stop the whingers!!

Hi, I have heard about a 'breeder' that can provide you with any typre of designer breed you want. She charged someone I know $500 for a 7week old pugalier, no immunisations that's apparently why the price was discounted I was told that she doesn't let anyone go to her place to see the pups as she doesn't want anyone bringing parvo in on their shoes. She takes them to her workplace ( an ABC childcare centre) where buyers pick up their pup. She supposedly has heaps of dogs at least a dozen and has told buyers that she can because she is a registered breeder. Noone seems to know where she lives but she is moving soon to a small town 40kms away for more room to breed more dogs. It is her husband's full time job this puppy breeding. How can I find out more ?- I'd love to know where they are so I can have a 'sneak peak'.

So if all Westies are as such, I should just avoid having children come near him? I see people not let others pat their dogs too, spending a few hundred dollars on a behaviourist for a problem that doesn't really matter to me is a little out of my budget. Not saying anything about the dog trainers listed on this thread because I have never met any of them, and they are probably amazing but just saying....as for dog behaviourists- you can get dog behaviourist certificates online. I'm sure there are great ones out there but there are plenty of online courses too ;) Dog training or obedience classes are a great suggestion. BUT I wouldnt be letting him near any children until you know it's all under control.

Punishing him for looking at kids will not fix the problem. That really is bad advice. If you were scared of something, would you be less scared if someone smacked you over the head every time you saw the thing you were scared of? Hahahahahaha...you made me laugh! Where did this say that the dog was to be punished??? lol check means just that check, like a gentle wiggle of a lead to check the dog, not choke or what did you liken it to?? hitting on the head if you reread you will clearly see that my suggestion was to give the dog a treat- to distract the dog from the stressor(child). I'm not sure how giving a dog a treat can be confused with punishment but there you have it! Checking a dog when saying its name in an excited happy tone of voice, in my experience is not going to make my dogs think they are being punished- unless of course my dogs are super smart!

I wouldn't ever get children to feed the dog. If the child gets a fright and pulls their hand away from the dog then it could get nasty. The dog may think that the child is taking away the food. Don't use kids as guinea pigs. You be there to make the dog think that having children pass by can be a pleasant experience. If you be there to call the dog away and lavish attention and give treats to him when he does turn his attention from them to you, then he will associate them passing by as a positive experience. He doesn't need to have a relationship with them. He just has to see them as non threatening and that good things can happen while they are around. It doesn't have to be WITH them that the good things happen though. By taking his focus off them, this will then become a non-issue in time and them passing by will be nothing important to him. I've seen this happen with a dog that hated a certain dog that went past its house. All of the above was done and now the dog can go past, the other dog will bark or watch but will come away from the fence immediately when called by its owner :-) ETA- initially, have your dog on a leash so that when you call it to you to play and treat you check it so that it cant get away from you if it tries.

Could you be outside with him and have him on a lead and when they pass by ( maybe school times?) and check him when he goes to look at them? or call him away and give him a treat when he comes away and focuses back on you? Play with him when they are going past so having them go past is not a bad thing. eta past not fast

Hi, Tricky situation. I think I'd go for a 2nd opinion, only to see if another vet has anything else to suggest. Then investigate the amputation option a little more. At 8 months though, still so young, I'd like to know how the situation improves with rest. I don't envy you making this decision. I do think people would take on a 3 legged dog for adoption. Some people just have a heart for these battlers :-)

Ok so we have just got home from the vet. It seems that it is some kind of infected tissue ( probably a cyst). It's not a hot spot as we thought as it was a number of wounds that were all connected under the skin. It was like a huge tissue lump that had erupted in areas. He is on a strong course of antibiotics and cortisone for two weeks. After that, if it has not subsided significantly then he will need surgery to take off the layer of lumopy tissue which is a section of about 15cm by 15cm. She hasn't ruled out cancer, but think it is more likely to be infected cysts. Thanks for your help. It was helpful to put my mind as ease just to be able to try a couple of things. Made me feel useful to the poor boy. eta- Oh and he doesn't need the cone of shame collar anymore either, so he's happy about that!!!

I found some bactroban! It was prescribed for my daughter 12 months ago. Is there an animal alternative, or is this what you use? I have now washed and applied betadine this morning , applied a gauaze and wrapped him up in rip rap. He seems happier now that the collar is off for the moment :-)

No none of those either- but will definetly be getting these after this. Never having anything happen like this before I am very unprepared. I will be stocked up for if this happens again, but mainly for the coming weeks as well. Thanks Guys I knew i'd get help here.

That is very normal canine play behaviour. He is playing thats all. The dogs themselves are great at determing intentions, if it was harmful the other dogs would certainly let him know.

Thanks Persephone, yeah it does doesn't it. It actually looks worse in person :-(...more inflamed and weepy. There's a smaller one just at the side too, not sure if the photos show it. I'm usuing the betadine about 3 times a day.....maybe I should do so more often? We do have an Elizabethan collar but he is actually being very good now. We have inside and if he goes to look at it we tell him and he stops. I prefer to have him comfortable- but could use the collar at night I guess!

I dont have any Tilly but I will try saline and betadine. Loads of show shampoos but no antifungal.

No I don't...... will check my supplies in case I have something similar

I hope someone can give me some advice. I can't get into the vet until Monday after work. Over a year ago my 8 year old Boxer had a small pimple size lump ( looked much bigger until they shaved it). I had it biopsied and the results came back clear as a bell. It was just a tisuue lump- nothing in it. Anyway I am assuming that the two are connected because now the biggest sore is where the lump was. Over the past week it has become open and weeping, lumpy and bulging. Over the past few days it has triped in size. I did notice that his kennel mate was licking it so we separated them. He has also been licking it but will stop when we tell him to. I am thinking that it is possible the licking has aggravated it to cause the spreading. This would also be explained by a fungal infection. I have been putting betadine solution on it. None of our other dogs have anything like it, not even the one he usually sleeps with. He doesn't mix with any other dogs apart from ours even on walks, so it doesn't appear to be anything contagious. I have never seen anything like this before and was hoping someone here might have some ideas especially what to do or not do. It has entered my head that it could be REALLY bad ( not saying the C-word out loud yet though), but don't know what that looks like to start with either. I'm really worried about my boy, if you have any suggestions please send them my way.

Thanks Staff and Toller, going to check used by date now! phew....2nd March 2012... I have trouble getting my breeder bags of Proplan performance, which I much prefer to the adult Proplan. I usually order the breeder bags from a local pet food and accesories supplier, he doesn't stock Proplan, but he orders in breeder bags for me :D Last time I had two vouchers and he only had one bag, by the time he EVENTUALLY ordered in the other bag, my voucher had expired so I have been going to Petstock, but he wont order in the breeder bags because I usually dont buy it from him, so he says it doesn't make him a profit. He also won't redeem vouchers, so I either have to swallow my pride and buy from him, or be much more organised than I have been and order in my food from the 1st guy weeks and weeks in advance. It means I am still a voucher down, but what can you do? So, the Proplan performance, which I and my dogs prefer, can be tricky to get, but it seems that HS is always available.

yeah Goldielover, that's my gut feeling too I think. I guess I just wondered if the ingredients in HS were better for the dogs. I gave a small handfull to one of my girls earlier and she LOVED it, but she loves all food :-) Might use it as a treat food.
