  1. Prime have just brought out a Crocodile and Tapioca roll that is designed for elimination diets and super sensitive dogs. Might be worth exploring. Their Roo and Potato is less expensive and very good but if she's had roo it might not help.

    Venison as an option?

One of our staff used salmon and sweet potato which helped start things.

Thanks sags, I did hear about the croc and tapioca roll but I couldn't find it on the internet for sale anywhere. Might have to look in some actual pet stores

Where did your staff member get the salmon from, canned or fresh?

    Fresh salmon from a fishmonger.

Suggest give Prime a call and see who is close to you that stocks it. We do, but not sure where you are.

  3. Here's a litter (now about 5 weeks old) that was conceived using 15 year old frozen semen. Yes, from a lovely dog, and to get older bloodlines back.

That makes sense RP; not being a breeder I didn't even think about using dead stud dogs. Is using them a common occurrence? The dog in my eyes would have to be truly exceptional or have died at a young age.

Breeding is a fascinating subject to me; there's so much to learn and know about the breeds and genetics. I truly have an appreciation for all the wonderful breeders out there!

  4. There is now a huge range of Nylabones including new puppy only types and they certainly can be included with other toys, treats and bones. See if you can find a good store with lots of choice and go for mouth appropriate sizes. Not every dog copes with bones and not every pup needs the extra calories from lots of chew treats or bones. It will be easier once you have your pup and can try a few different things.

Another suggestion is deer antlers, as they are long lasting and very satisfying. Don't be afraid to take it away after a good chew as some dogs won't stop. Next to no calories or fat and lots of entertainment.

  5. Thank you for the replies.

At this stage she has gone to LDH. We have said that we will take her once she is available. We had to be seen to do everything right as we'd been posting on lots of local FB pages including our own store (4Paws & More Pet Supplies), so needed to go through the correct channels. Besides, if there is even a small chance that the kitten had been stolen then dumped, I would want the owner to have a chance to reunite with her.

Leah82, do you work for Petstock or are you organising adoption days from the adoption centre's perspective? If the latter, feel free to contact me as we've done some work in this area and would love to host more days.

    Thanks again,

  6. Wondering if anyone has a copy of this that I could read? Looking for correct information about the responsibilities of manufacturers adding sulphite preservatives to fresh pet meat. Or, if there is an alternative information source, a link would be wonderful.

    Thanks!

  7. I think you'll find that Showdog is referring to having Adaptil collars on them during the flight. Adaptil spray on a blanket would be safe (if a blanket is allowed - years since I flew a dog).

Get them really used to crates so that they enjoy the experience of being crated and it becomes a comfort rather than another new thing.

Are they crate trained yet ,if not start ssap & for longer & longer periods

I never ever fly my dogs with collars on to risky

No their not crate trained, they have the run of the house, I work from home so I've never needed to crate train them?

Sorry Showdog meant to add that I don't put collars on them and no I won't be putting collars on them on the flight. I have always used harnesses for walking them.

    Thank you

  8. We've started stocking Aussie deer antlers after a lot of requests. Super fresh, extremely well received by a high percentage of dogs so far. We find that starting them off on a split antler is good, as they have access to the very slightly softer marrow inner. What we love is that they are a renewable product and that no harm comes to the source animal.

  9. Try some Ziwipeak - the cans are very tempting and not full of rubbish. They also do air dried jerky style dog food that is easier to eat and full of nutrition. Another thought is Sunday Pets Raw Chow, which is freeze dried meat etc that you add water too. All are really healthy options and generally will encourage eating.

  10. We've been selling this food at the salon I work at for the entire time I've been there (over a year) and it's by FAR the most popular food and so many people have had fabulous success on it, we've had a lot of people swap onto it from Holistic Select, Canidae etc. My allergy Cavalier did really well on it too. The only issue I have with it is the size of the kibble, as my Pap is a hoover, so I mix it up with a bit of Nutro to slow him down.

I was told the food is manufactured in Melbourne but I could be wrong on that, so don't take my word for it!

    It's made in Reservoir Vic

For those using this food what varieties are you feeding. I have been seriously thinking of trying it on my dogs as it has no wheat, corn, soy, beet pulp or tomato pomice. With all other dog kibbles I've researched you can't get away from at least one of them. My only dilemma is which one to get. I have one fatty & 2 thin dogs.

Other brands free of those ingredients include Canidae Grain free varieties and Sunday Pets Grain free. :-)

  11. Yes yes and yes showdog. Groomers are not created equal and some just don't care. A long established salon in the next town over sends lots of dogs to us... because the owners get sick of picking up their dogs with nicked skin. But owners often believe the coat is in great shape until our lovely lady shows them with a comb what a mess is underneath (not referring to your Clipped Spitz :-)). So many unrealistic expectations, books and photos coming with the dog whose structure and coat will never support what the owner wants.

Thank goodness there are so many wonderful clients!

    Sags

Not true at all whilst Groomers will advice not to plenty are & will be double coat or not it does not affect the dog especially in Australia & in a perfect world all Spitzs would come in with perfect coats but most don't & no decent groomer will torture a dog to dematt it .It would be wonderful n the perfect world but reality it isn't & the percentage of well groomed dogs is getting worse each year sadly .

Communicating with some owners isn't that easy either you would be surprised what people read & take as gospel or it should be done this way when a good groomer knows the coat texture will not work that way or clipping with those baldes is not suitable for the coat ,We get people who bring in grooming comp photo's & explaining to them that most advanced classes the dogs have product in to get that effect is hard ,even with our own breed Mon -Fri there pets weekend there chalked & sprayed up & look like a different dog.

We had one lady insist her dog was to be clipped with a #40 all over as she had researched the blades obviously it wasn't going to happen & after her extreme rudeness & total disrespect for our knowledge v hers she was proven to be wrong & had to eat her words .WE wouldn't do it but chances are someone would & she would be the kind of person to sue you .

Being a groomer is a hard life & we see some shockers & our breed is one of the worse for very bad hair cuts & groomers coming up with creative names ,the number of people who come in tears because they wanted to go closer to home & got a crappy groom is mind blowing & in this day & age there is no excuse to not research your breeds for the day or learn more .

Although some grooming schools teach bad things so not surprised .

This time of the year is often the worse as peoiple are desperate to get there dogs done so the fly by nights come out :dropjaw: & earn a fast buck .

The tafe course at one stage was purely clip offs & thats all the students learnt to do the one blade all over look ,fast & quick out the door

  12. How is Jessie going? Update please?

@stressmagnet.....Jessie is back to her normal self....I have changed her to the Hills SD Sensitive Stomach and she seems to be doing well on it but we will have to wait for the 2-3 month mark to really see how she is doing on it.....on Sunday she went back to Rally-O and obedience training and had a ball......if anything she thinks she is starving and even had a bench surf which she has never done and grabbed a piece of roast beef off the bench

I have had a look at the link that JulesP put up but I will have to ask the vet because of Jessie's medications as I really do not know how they will react with her medications

awesome news! I'm really interested in Jessie's journey as I have a friend with a dog going through similar ups and downs.

  13. thanks Sueang it is something that I can certainly speak to my vet about as well....although if it is highly contagious my other dogs drink from the same water as Jessie and they all lick each others mouths and they are not sick at all and yes all water at our house is changed every day for them to have clean fresh water daily but something else to look into so thank you very much

I forgot to write if the other dogs have a good immune system chances of getting the Helicobacter virus are slim, as they will have alot of good bacteria to fight the bad bacteria off. I asked the vet about my cat as he drinks out of the same water bowl & thats what she told me..Also put them all on a good dog probiotic I use Vetafarm Probiotic its a powder I just mix 1 teaspoon to 10-15ml water in a bowl & Patch just drinks it, I give daily after breakfast well I will be doing again after the Anitbiotics are finished in 3 weeks..You keep Vetafarm in the fridge, has to be store under 25degrees, its sold at Pet Barn in the bird section now, I dont know why they moved it, it use to have a dog & cat on the container now it has a red chicken & lorekett on the side & they put in the bird section they do sell Paws probiotic in dog section but its dearer double the price & has less strains of good bacteria the vetafarm has around 7-8 strains of good bacteria..like the vets Protexin Vetafarm has the same ingredients as Protexin & its sold at vets for $65 Vetafarm sells for only $20 Paws sells for $45

Just for the record, Paws DigestiCare 60 has 7 strains and is also in a large tub (150gm compared to 90gm).

READ the ingredients, it has less CFU/g LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS it only has 60 million,....Where the Vetafarm & Protexin yellow container has 180 million....the Protexin Green label has only 60 million like Paws & its cheaper then Paws, so why pay $40 something dollars When you can get the VetaFarm for $20 just like what vets use the yellow label Protexin that sells for $65... buy the Paws larger tube u'll just need to use more...

No need to yell at me. You said that Paw had less strains and I only pointed out that is has 7. Not how many little wiggly things are there. :)

Can I ask what the dosage is for the Vetafarm product?

The Vetafarm is 90g it last me over 1 month.....Oh dosage, I started with 1 level teaspoon for 1 week, just incase Patch had diarrhea & he didnt, made his poos firmer, it comes with a spoon inside now I just give 1 level spoon that is inside container, I think their spoon holds 2 level teaspoons. I give after 1 hour after breakfast every day, Patch loves it, I mix about 10-15ml water, he just drinks it but some dog wont drink it, so just sprinkle over meal You can also email the Vetafarm company they are really good with advise...but if ur dog is on antibiotics you have to either wait till antibiotics are finished or give the probiotic 4 hours after you've giving antibiotcs, as the antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the probiotic...

    How heavy is Patch?

  17. After much thought,, my first choice is the Chihuahua BUT I've come to the conclusion that I may never obtain the type of Chihuahua I'm after as breeders keep that type for themselves or sell it amongst themselves.

Breeders - sell it amongst themselves? What do you mean by that? And maybe you could get yourself included in their "in crowd" by actually having some face to face meetings and being MORE PATIENT.

And how would you feel if you were told that you were "second choice" or 10th choice and therefore miss out on a puppy... I understand you can love all three breeds - but it also (from out here reading your posts) makes you seem a bit indecisive.

And breeders get burnt by indecisive buyers every day - because they "maybe I'd like that puppy, I'll have to think about it" - indecisive and then they change their minds. Some of these tyre kickers never even let the breeder know they've changed their mind about where they're getting their puppy. Can you see how what you've written in here - can make you look like one of those people?

I am by far an "indecisive" buyer, as I said dozens of times already; all 3 breeds would suit me to a T but I am not prepared to just purchase any Chihuahua or just any Sheltie, I am after a particular look and if I were to obtain that look, I would be more than happy. I like to spend time, on the phone, with a breeder and detail exactly what it is I am looking for. For example, I do not want a Chihuahua with an overshot or undershot bite, I don't want the "Deer" type Chihuahua, I want an apple head with a shortish nose as opposed to a long, pointy snout. In regards to the Sheltie, I would like one with a full collar and even facial markings as I prefer symmetrical markings. I would like a friendly, approachable Sheltie as opposed to being timid and/or nervous. I have spoken to several Chihuahua breeders and without fail they ALWAYS keep those pups for themselves or sell to another breeder they know…and I'm not making invalid assumptions, I am being told as much. The same can be said of Sheltie breeders. Another issue is that I do NOT want a young pup that has already been desexed. My vet highly discourages it. Basically, I've kept an open mind in that if my pup of choice was to present itself, be it a Chihuahua or a Sheltie I would purchase it. I don't see a problem with that. I would love each of these breeds equally.

One of our staff and her mum recently purchased a Chi each from a breeder in Vic and having seen one of the pups, I would consider it to have characteristics you want. So there definately are breeders out there willing to sell to newcombers, it is just a case of finding the right person. Same with Shelties, I know a number of lovely breeders who will work with their puppy buyers - but you need to remember that Mother Nature doesn't always provide numbers or specifics in a litter.
