the look on the boxers face after is priceless....

the head trainer mentioned how calm he was...she has choc labs too. i came clean and told her he'd only had half of his breakfast so he would be more focused on me with a pocket full of treats
You don't need to do that with the labs - it doesn't matter how full they are they are still just as keen for the next morsel
Though come to think of it....I recon my hands come out of the training sessions more intact when shes not so hungry :p
Wilbur was born broken; he wasn't at all food motivated. We had to teach him to be food motivated and still doesn't 'perform' well unless partially hungry. He doesn't refuse food if it's on offer for free when he's full but won't 'perform' for it.
I've heard about these broken labs - I thought they were an urban myth :p
I have found that despite my dog being willing to work for anything there are definitely foods which are higher value for her (cheese, devon, roast chicken and frankfurters mostly) which produce a much more motivated response. She also likes a tennis ball but it is too much for her (her brain goes into overload and the system freezes) but only feigns a mild interest in a tug. You'll just have to play around until you can work out what he really wants.
or....just keep starving him :D

RubyBlue I like the name Dyson, especially with the labs tendancy to hoover up their food
Yep - no crumbs in my house :D

As an owner of a small dog he is always in the house when I am out. It is the safest place for him no matter how diligent you are accidents do and can happen. I guess they can happen in a house as well but for my own piece of mind my beloved dog stays inside. I am so sorry for the Jack Russells owners.
I'm always concerned of a housefire whilst I'm away. A year or so ago someone deliberately burnt down a council house not too far from me. Seeing the burnt washing hanging on the line even months later gave me the creeps. The thought that my pets could die in a fire trapped in the house is a bit of a hang up of mine. Unless some one is around to let them out I'd much rather they be outside.

He managed to, fairly well, sit/lay while the head trainer did the orientation.
...What a good little man
I can only hope when I get mine he will have such good manners

I though I would pop in to say hi to everybody here I will be getting an Anatolian Shepherd Dog puppy as my next dog and I'm in the very much excitement stage :D At this stage I may be getting one early next year, but we will see what happens with timing as I am waiting for a girl with a really nice affable pet temperament
Each day I lay out more plans... places I can take my puppy too while we're socializing, I keep driving by places and going 'Oh cool I have to visit there'! I have this list of dog friends and family to schedule playdates with, at work I see toys or a collar and think that would be perfect. I am planning to take at least a week off work and just take my new girl out every day, everywhere I go :D
Ooooh! Ive only ever seen pictures of them. They look like hansom dogs. Will she be a pet or do you have a flock for guarding?
My flock consists of my husband and me, my older boy Zeke, and my other assorted pets - no livestock to guard but plenty of birds! My girl will be my pet and companion primarily. In the flesh they are utterly magnificent dogs, and those that I've met have the most stunning temperaments
So hyped up I've actually got a list I'm keeping of all the places to take her :D
Tara would love to see photos too!
Ah - another birdo :)Ive an ekky (1 - I don't think I could cope with more)
I never thought about a list of places, I was just going to go everywhere. If things go to plan the puppy I am getting is a singleton so I should start a list of safe places until vaccinated...then everywhere .
Do you have a name yet? Am thinking 'Dyson' should suit a large male lab.

Yep, someone who has a purebred cavoodle.
Me: It's not a purebred.
Her: Yes it is, I paid $1,200 for it.
Me: It's a cross.
Her: No, he is a purebred.
Me: It's a cavalier CROSS poodle.
Her: ...oh my god, I got ripped off!!!
That is GOLD:-)
I thought it was a red head.... :p

Ah sorry, I think I phrased that wrong. I mean, for those people who have a "purebred shih tzu/bichon", how do they differentiate their purebred one from a crossbred shih tzu/bichon? I've heard about 'second generation' labradoodles etc, and am just wondering whether it's something like that. People will consider their cross to be a "purebred" if its mother was (for example) a purebred bichon frise, and father a purebred shih tzu. But if the parents were also crosses, then it would be a crossbred. Or, vice versa. I dunno - just trying to work out people's rationale for thinking like that (beyond just not knowing).
Ah - I recon that is just a lack of information or mis-information from the petshop staff.
I think I remember somewhere about there needing to be 5 or 6 generations of breeding dogs that look the same to start a breed so two parents of the same mix definitely doesn't count for purebred puppies.
-
I'm just curious as to what a crossbred "purebred" whatever x whatever is.
Do you mean as in definitions of terms?
wiki recons:
- 'purebred' is one that closely resembles others of the same breed
- 'pedigree' is where the lineage is recorded
Im assuming that 'crossbred' is the result of two 'purebred' or 'pedigree' dogs of different breeds.

You could also try some foraging toys - or just toys. I have a tendency to scavenge when I'm bored.
-
Hope you have a great time
- if you can cope with holding a camera aswell as an excited puppy we'd love to see some pictures.

Haha - all the time. Im sure Ive seen "pure-bred" on the window of a petshop 'oodle' cage...more than once.

I really could not choose! I think its more individual personality than anything!
My boy is a mummies boy but my girl is one of those bright and bubbly dogs that loves everyone! My boy is more independent whereas my girl just smooches and cuddles all day!
Bubby is a one human sort of dog.
Agreed. Both my male and female have been the complete opposite of what they are said to be.
I'd prefer a male next time purely because with a female dog, cat, parrot and two housemates we desperately need some testosterone.

Just this last Wednesday night around 7.00 p.m. we were in our kitchen/dining area when all of a sudden out of nowhere an indian man appeared from around the corner of our laundry which is where the back door is.....we looked at him and all he could say was "29 baby" I turned to ask some friends if he was with them (they had just arrived) they shrugged their shoulders as if to say not with them and then we heard this awful noise....Dezzy came skating along the tiles on the kitchen floor with Jessie saying I am going to join in too but u can do all the growling....my husband got between the intruder and Dezzy and he said he had to use all his force to hold Dezzy back from getting to this guy....I got past and called Dezzy who came and I put him in a room and locked him in there....the guy had gone through our side gate and slipped the latch under the padlock and walked straight through the back door...I always thought that Dezzy would lick an intruder and say take what u want but I think ourselves and kids along with our house are going to be pretty safe
Go Dezzy

Can just imagine this scenario - dog gets hold of lead, eats the hand. You are out in public and dog craps out a hand held poo to the horror of on-lookers
oh I nearly fell of my chair

Hi all,
I am hopefully getting a new pup at the end of the year and would really like to give retrieving a go. Is there a club I can join or information sessions I can go to or does anyone train in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Apart from this thread - I haven't the foggiest idea where to even start.
Cheers,
RB

Sorry to hear this - at least she is not in any pain.
-
You could try 'crate games' with her - might help her to feel more comfortable in her crate.

Very cute
