  1. Select your best results daydog. You would probably still have won. I can see where you are coming from. While people know who have won the pointscore ther has not been that announcement yet. You are waiting for your moment in the sun and instead of acknowledging who won what this year, you feel your moment of glory for all you and others did over the past 12 months has been cast aside. You opened up DNA expecting to read about 2011 and instead, the story already moves on to 2012. Am I right?

Just wanted to say that the 2011 winners haven't been cast aside. The March Dog News is the official 'Winner's Edition' that showcases all the pointscore winners of 2011. There is a 'winners edition' every year.

Whilst in theory it would be nice to have it immediately in the January edition, it would be impossible to organise in that short time seeing as the edition would have been sent to the printers before the competition even officially ended.

I was more asking daydogs to clarify what the post meant than passing judgement. Dogzonline have always celebrated their winners.

Been there in a totally different sport so I do understand your disappointment. If it makes you feel any better, I read the leader boards in every breed because I am interested in all dog showing. Congratulations on a wonderful effort.

You aside because it is your thread, I can't help noticing the serial braggart working their faded success in to the reply somehow. Somewhere, somehow, ME, ME, ME ends up in the reply.

  3. I haven't entered because we had our gazebo destroyed there two years ago We found out later that it was a regular thing at this show. Yes, we left it up halfway and well secured. Lesson learnt. We never leave a gazebo up anywhere now.

Understand how much you have had to do aimals but there is no need to be so narky. The questions are reasonable and the posters are polite. As I understand your position as secretary, I would think that you either stood for the position or volunteered. If it is too much for you, perhaps see if you can get an assistant or step aside so others see your workload.

  6. Congratulations on your BoB win Jbea, glad to hear you had a nice day.

I agree with the people in this thread who have said that each person needs to make the decision that is right for both them and their dog/s. Some people live close by, they and their dogs cope well in the heat etc. and I can understand their reasoning for showing in the heat.

I hate the heat, so had a nice day relaxing in air conditioned comfort :D.

Unless people were actually there for the whole of the show, they can't say with 100% accuracy if it was too hot. I have seen plenty of set ups at dog shows where I dare say the dogs were cooler than they would have been at home. Plenty of water, ice, cool coats and fans. Even if there were some exhibitors with no consideration for their dogs and I seriously doubt that, there are plenty around who would tell them to take more care. My BC is long haired and where did he lie at home yesterday? On our lawn, asleep in the full sun for a good hour.

Ambient temperature from a car is totally useless if the vehicle is or has been running. It picks up the engine as a heat source and raises the temp reading by at least 5 and more degrees. You can't judge what 37 degrees in an open area, with a breeze felt like compared to a closed suburban backyard would be. The show officials and the judges did all they could to get the show over and people away at a decent hour. I wouldn't choose to show as I don't cope with the heat as well as my dogs do, but I won't abuse those who did compete.

  7. One only catalogue for both the shows - each entry indicates whether entered at both or only one - and if only one,

    it will indicate which one..

So the catalogue will be accurate!!!!

    Regards

    Gael

Entry fee should be obvious. You enter 2 shows, you pay 2 entries. I can understand the question regarding catalogues because if the one catalogue contains all entries and is to be used for both shows then it will be inaccurate for both shows unless every dog entered is going to both shows. It may not make a difference in breeds with bigger numbers but I have been to double header shows where there have been no entries in a couple of breeds in front of mine from one day to the next. It has made up to an hours difference on the time my dogs were judged.

    Thanks Gael. That works :D

  9. When we lived in Melb, we were hassled relentlessly by the neighbour over a barking dog. She did not even fit the council criteria for a nuisance dog. She never barked longer than 90 seconds and I know that because I kept a diary religiously to show 'it' every time she came banging on our door.

She would hear dogs barking in the surrounding houses and blame mine and there were two occasions I waved BOB. Certificates under her nose as proof we were not even home. Her son started the barking by banging on the fence and teasing the dog. When people complain they can hear a dog bark from inside your own house, what hope do you have of any sensible discussion. I considered debarking but in the end, we sold up and moved. Best thing we ever did.

I was totally against debarking because I think I humanised the procedure. The bark can be quite husky and in a human that equals a sore throat. A friend had her boy debarked and it really educated me to how simple the operation actually is. He is quite a sensitive dog and can go off his food for a book full of reasons. Many times I have seen my friend hand feeding him because he does not handle any sort of stress and eating is the first thing that stops. Apart from the first night he came home, he never refused a single feed after the op. he is actually less stressed than he has ever been and I put that down to the fact that he can now vocalist his feelings albeit in a husky voice.

  10. makes those happy that find the current rules hard.

    So who's whinging?

    You miss the point.

Some here believe gaining titles should be harder to obtain than simply being gifted for turning up.

I believe a title gain by a dog being placed before maybe a couple of hundred exhibits at breed level is more worthy of the title than one that hasn't been placed in front any.

    You obviously don't agree.

that's your opinion, you are entitled to it.

I didnt say that I didnt agree that titles should be harder... but do we seriously need to carry on and on about something that has been decided on? How about we look at it from another's point of view and be a little more open minded... or would we just rather everyone p*ss off out of the showring so we have no competition at all? I have top winning kelpies, yes that win at group and show level, with consistant best of breed wins but not enough competition to crack the 25pt best of breed yet. All I am trying to say is that there will be dogs out there that are exceptional for their breed but are unable to pick up groups. This is usually because judges continually put up the favourite breeds. Honest judges seem to be getting harder and harder to find, but they are out there... it is a matter of being patient til they turn up. I just hate seeing ALL dogs that have titles without group wins lumped in the same box. Seriously, those that are dodgy winners, everyone usually knows about anyway within their own breeds.

I do understand what you are saying and you are venting out of frustration - been there and do completely understand this point. I just sat down many years ago and thought hard about why I show Border Terrier rather than Poodles, Sibes, Staffies etc and realised I showed my breed because it is my great love - that is what it is all about.

We have become so focused on all the 'fluff' that we are losing our souls to it (bit dramatic but making a point here) and I was not about to trade my breed in for some BIGs and BISs. I decided to do everything I could to have the best I could in my chosen heart breed and when I get a BIG or BIS, my heart really sings as I know how hard it is to get there. The harder the Challenge the greater the reward.

This is the price we pay for loving certain breeds and many might deserve a Grand or Supreme title but we have made these choices - ie, having a little brown dog, not being a judge, living in Timbuktu, living in Melbourne. I am sure not going to change anything or compromise for a certificate that really means "what"?

Beautifully said Bohunt. I have seen your dogs often and the love of your breed in your posts shows ten fold when you see you with them in person.

This thread is same old, same old. Those who want to keep it locked down and massively difficult to get any award along with those who dont want their rare breeds spoken of in such derogative fashion. Closely followed by the scoffing braggarts who boast how easy it is for them to get a Grand with their rare breed so what is all the whinging about. Funny how you can start off admiring people from their posts and after post 3643 listing just how amazing they are personally, you go off them quite a lot.

Easy solution. Ban showing any dog breed that cannot attract enough entries for a 25 point challenge. Only give out points to those breeds and get rid of the rest. Only dogs with enough numbers can compete for any championship or Grand award. Totally ridiculous? Of course it is but in a perverse kind of way, that is exactly the discrimination a lot of you are throwing at those who show rare or numerically small competing breeds. It is what it is. Statistics from the show rings Australia wide prove that the move to BIS, BIG, 25 point challenges was a bad and unpopular move.

  11. There is always a good public response to the Pet Expo at Caulfield. I see that Kilmore A&P is having an information session on horse ownership at their show. As well as some local horse studs, there will be someone there from the DPI and a local equine vet. It does not need to be every show, but why is there not something like that at our bigger shows?

  12. Forgive me.

    I surrender to the majority.

Dogs shows are merely beauty contests & freak shows.

How could I have been so blind for the last 25+ years.

I am a relative newbie to dog showing but showed horses for more years than you have shown dogs . It is your type of sarcastic and derisive postings that has kept me reading rather than posting very much in the 3 years since I joined this site.

If you can be so sarcastic and unpleasant to like minded people having a conversation , I can not see how you can be so disbelieving that people can encounter such rudeness at a show to people they do not know.

    Sceptical?

    Guilty as charged.

I am somewhat more than sceptical that an exhibitor would approach & abuse an unknown member of the general public for simply quietly observing.

However, if there was a history between these people one could hardly blame the show fraternity for such an outburst, could one?

    Sarcastic & unpleasant?

    Opinions may vary.

The post of your own you quoted is not sarcastic then? Oh. So you are making a factual statement then? I think not.

Yet another one bragging that your dog show experience makes you superior. I have never encountered rudeness directed to me but I have seen many examples directed at the general public. Like the little boy playing with his toy beside the ropes at one Mildura show. The toy exhibitor wheeling her trolley past screamed at him to get out of the way. He was there first and there was no need for her to raise her voice the way she did. Little guy took off in tears.

Like the lovely elder couple from Darwin who nervously asked at Benalla show if they could just stop and look at our dogs. We invited them in to the gazebo and gave them one to hold and they proceeded to tell us how rude other exhibitors had been to them. One had told them they were to move on and not stand and look at their dogs. There would not be a single show we attend where someone from the general public has not talked to us about exhibitor rudeness.

I suggest you get out of your tent and talk to people who wont be feathering your nest. Give up the networking at just one show and find out how non dog people are treated by many.

  14. I have read every post and can't quite figure out why Smacka has turned nasty. People here are talking about their own experiences so just because you had not encountered the same thing, does not mean it did not happen. I have been asked some incredibly weird things just walking a dog in the park so it is not a stretch to think it could be said anywhere else. I could not count the number of times people have said they have watched the movie Best in Show and they ask me if all dog shows and dog people are like that. In a totally mfunny sort of way, they are :D

Smacka, my dad said to me that when you are in the right, you did not need to lose your temper and when you were in the wrong, you could not afford to. We are all like minded people who love our dogs. There are a wide range of people with different levels of experience. There is no need or want for derisive comment.

  15. Anyone else get a complete empty envalope? lol!

Double check with them if they got your entry I know of someone that entered Sunbury and all they got back was the return envelope with nothing in it, they called to double check and they hadn't had their entries received at all. :S

They must have got the entry if they received the return envelope

Not if they accidentally posted the envelope back to themself. I have done that once when I was sending out a hep of entries
