Don't know what your problem is mate!

Where I live there is no 'local' trainer near me who has any idea how to train a dog like my gsd. I tried with them and they made things worse.

I have used a couple of Steves distance learning packages, both Training in Drive and LLW. Both I have found extremely helpful. I communicated to Steve with email, phone calls and on line video footage, and let me tell you the amount of contact and support I had from him was second to none. In monetry terms I got more per dollar from this program than perhaps I would have seeing a trainer face to face.

So perhaps before you get on your high horse about these programs being nothing more than a revenue raiser, maybe you should educate yourself as to what they actualy entail.

For people like me that have no local trainer option, they can be a lifeline!

Our local laws lady has a Doberman and a Staffy. Would love to know what she thinks about the legislation and how she is going to implemt it!

It might be worth having a chat with your friend and seeing if he would be willing to pass the information and a copy of the letter (even if he removes his personal details) to the media. How many people are going to be scared shitless by these notices and have no idea the law doesn't include staffies yet????

A friend of mine who i think? lives in the Hume council, was sent a letter last week from council. It stated that his Stafford was now declared a restriced breed and that he had to take steps as of the end of the month to comply with relevant regulations.

His dog is registered with council as a SBT and has papers! he will be fighting it.

How can that even be possible? SBTs aren't yet restricted under law???

ETA - this so called 'killer' dog lives with two children, one of whom has a disability. Killer dog nightly helps the little boy by patiently standing with him an providing something for him to lean on when he brushes his teeth. She follows him everywhere keeping an eye on him, and has warned the family by barking when the little boy wandered out of the house and down the driveway.

Actualy I don't think that is correct. Prong collars are only illegal in Victoria.

E-collars can be used here in Vic as long as you have vet consent and are using it under the guidance of a qualified trainer. From memory you had to see the trainer every six months or so.

Tenatpride can you please post where in the act you believe it to state they are illegal.

Have a read through the prevention of cruelty to animals act. I think you will find that the use of Prong and all electronic collars is deemed illegal under the act.

Its an interesting read actually because by definition any collar with a battery inserted would be deemed electronic by normal definition thereby making the use of barking collars illegal as well. Can't wait for that to be tested in court.

You will also find that their use is against ANKC regulations and a review of their website should locate it.

I had a Doberman as a young teenager, he was the most loyal, protective and snuggly dog. I have always had a special place in my heart for them.

Hope things are looking better in the morning.

My first non family dog was a Siberian Husky when I was 17 years old and had moved out home.

We had several challenges but I managed and learned pretty quickly.

I hate to say it but 'trying' to walk a high drive GSD 3 times a week is no where near enough exercise. I would say she is bored and full of energy.

My GSD definitely requires a daily walk and mental stimulation or she will take it upon herself to provide her own entertainment!

My 13 month old nephew shakes his head, imitating his dobe x who does the same with his tug toy. You can see them sometimes standing next to each other shaking their heads (the dog with his toy, boy laughing hysterically)

He also pretends to eat when the dog gets his dinner!

What a wonderful tribute to someone who was so obviously a much loved friend. She sounds like an amazing dog and companion, my heart is breaking for you.

Yes KOE it is Mica I was talking about. I didn't know much about the effects of early desexing and went on my vets advice. She did end up quite tall (quite a bit above standard) but I don't know if that was a cause of early desexing or not.

My GSD was desexed at 6 months. I never had to decrease her food intake. In fact at times she is hard to keep weight on, she is very active and quite lean. She certainly isn't fat and lazy and I certainly didnt notice a difference when she was desexed.

I don't have have much knowledge about bark collars only e-collars, but I am assuming that this collar works similarly to an e-collar?

If this is the case, is it possible the collar is activating but the stim not reaching the dog? Are the probes making proper contact with the dogs skin? Sometimes hair can get in the way and the collar may be working properly just that the probes aren't in the correct position.

He has helped me with my GSD and her stock chasing habits.

My Sibe lived with a cat whom she adored, they used to wrestle. Kaiya was very gentle and would stop immediately if the cat made any ouchy noises.

I got the kitten when my sibe was an adult and she learned to live with her just fine.

Yes might be a good idea. Its easy not to notice things with her as not much slows her down.

Just a quick update.

I have taken Mica to see David Jones and as recommended he was terrific! At first he was concerned about her hips but had a close examination of all her joints and it turns out her left hip was out of place as was her spine at the base of her tail and it was pinching her sciatic nerve. He believes that it is an old injury as she has some muscle wastage around her left hip. He thinks she must have had a fall or something, which wouldn't surprise me as she does tend to run and jump pretty furiously.

He managed to get the bones back into alignment and with strict rest for the next two days she should be good to get back to normal life and rebuild her left hip.

The good news is that he couldn't feel any signs of HD.

It does make you wonder how I could miss this for so long though. I am now rethinking all the little signs that I thought were separate incidents that was probably part of this problem, like once playing with her tug she yelped in mid tug and limped for a few strides. She kept tugging though and seemed fine It was hard to tell though as she was still acting normal, running, playing etc until last week. But the good news is she should be on the mend.
